Both the 18s and 23s are in action today.


The 18s host the Mancs at the Academy this morning, kick off at 11:00 with live coverage on the offal from 10:30.

 

The 23s meanwhile host City at Anfield later today, kick off at Anfield at 18:00. No live coverage of this as far as I am aware.

 

Team news once it's available.

Liverpool U23s were beaten 4-1 by their Manchester City counterparts at Anfield on Saturday evening, writes Chris Shaw.

Neil Critchley’s side had recovered from an early concession in the Premier League 2 clash to quickly level via the penalty spot, Rhian Brewster dispatching from 12 yards.

But the visitors got back in front with a spot-kick of their own on the stroke of half-time and moved into a stronger lead with a third moments into the second half. Adrian Bernabe assured three points with a fourth late on.

It was a special occasion for several of the young Reds as they ran out onto the turf at the first-team stadium, while Jürgen Klopp’s seniors were simultaneously winning 3-0 at Burnley.

City struck the first blow with nine minutes on the clock, however, when a corner from the right-hand side reached Taylor Harwood-Bellis at the back post and the defender forced a header past Daniel Atherton at the Kop end.

Liverpool shrugged off the setback to restore parity in a matter of moments.

Brewster tried to release Curtis Jones into the box after an intelligent burst forward by the attacker, who was brought down, prompting an instant penalty decision from the referee.

It was Brewster who took responsibility from 12 yards and the No.9 emphatically sent his penalty into the left side of the net as the goalkeeper dived the wrong way.

Nabili Touaizi threatened to restore City’s advantage shortly before the half-hour as he bore down on goal but Sepp van den Berg made a timely intervention to block.

The openness of the encounter made for a series of chances and Brewster saw a blast repelled when played into a shooting position by Pedro Chirivella.

Jayden Braaf fired off target from a promising situation at one end and Harvey Elliott had a decent curler from 20 yards touched over at the other, before City got their second.

Liverpool were aggrieved when Bernabe won a penalty but the referee waved away appeals and Tommy Doyle ignored the protests to keep his nerve in front of the home supporters.

And the disappointment was compounded three minutes after the restart.

A dangerous free-kick whipped in from the right flank caused problems in the six-yard box and despite a reaction stop by Atherton in the Reds goal, Joel Latibeaudiere was there to convert the rebound and make it 3-1.

With their confidence boosted by the double, City began to dictate, though Louie Moulden had to deny a Brewster effort powerfully driven into the ground towards goal.

Atherton made several important saves to keep Liverpool in with a chance of mounting a comeback but those hopes were extinguished when Bernabe wrapped up the scoring with a clinical angled strike with a quarter of an hour to go.

Liverpool U18s were beaten 5-2 in a top-of-the-table clash with Manchester City at the Academy Stadium after what was the archetypal game of two halves, writes Andy Kelly.

The young Reds dominated the first period with goals from Jake Cain and Niall Brookwell - and could have been out of sight inside the opening 25 minutes.

But they were left to rue their missed chances as City hit back strongly after the break to stretch their lead at the top of the league.

The starting line-up saw Brookwell drop into a back three for the Reds with wing-backs Jack Walls and James Norris pushed higher.

The formation seemed to help Barry Lewtas’ side press high on a City team determined to play out from deep, and the opening 25 minutes were characterised by Liverpool winning the ball and creating chances.

Within three minutes Layton Stewart pinched possession from the opposition backline and fed Tom Hill but City goalkeeper James Trafford spread himself well to stop the effort.

Leighton Clarkson was the next to latch onto a loose pass, also feeding Hill, whose shot was this time sliced wide.

A superb team move by Liverpool culminated with Clarkson arriving to a lay-off but his attempt was just over as the visitors continued to create all the chances.

The Reds had a penalty shout when Walls played in Hill down the right and he looked to be pulled down as he burst into the box – but the referee waved it away.

Further opportunities for Clarkson and Hill failed to hit the net but the breakthrough finally arrived on 22 minutes.

Cain’s left-footed curler from 20 yards was his third goal of the season and gave Trafford no chance.

City stirred and it needed a fantastic clearance from Walls to maintain the lead from under his own posts after the hosts won a header at a corner.

Their equaliser arrived on 34 minutes, though. The Reds failed to clear, allowing James McAtee to burst into the box and finish well past debutant goalkeeper Jakub Ojrzynski.

City required an unbelievable double block on the line to deny Remi Savage and then Stewart but the Reds were still able to regain the lead just before the break.

Billy Koumetio won the ball at the back post from a corner and Brookwell was on hand to turn it home with his head on 45 minutes.

The second half was a different proposition as City found their stride.

Impressive striker Liam Delap had already rattled the post with a powerful shot when he finished from close range on 49 minutes to make it 2-2.

Stewart and Koumetio went close for Liverpool but City were ahead just after the hour mark. Delap latched onto a long pass, closed in on goal and finished cleverly for his second of the game.

Home substitute Jamie Bynoe-Gittens hit the post and the fourth came soon after for the home team, through captain D’Margio Wright-Phillips with a shot from distance.

Bynoe-Gittens gained compensation for his earlier miss on 79 minutes when he rounded Ojrzynski to score the fifth after more good work from Delap.

Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Curtis Jones added to an own goal for the Reds, while Ben Winterbottom also saved a penalty.

Rhian Brewster departed the field early as a precaution due to Divock Origi picking up an injury earlier on in the day for the first team.

With Dutch duo Ki-Jana Hoever and Sepp van den Berg pairing up at centre-back once again, Neil Critchley’s side started brightly and took an early lead.

Jones fed a lovely pass into the path of Dixon-Bonner, who drove forward and finished superbly.

The away side, who included former Academy graduate Andre Wisdom, were then awarded a penalty kick but Winterbottom, making his Premier League 2 debut, produced a brilliant stop to deny Morgan Whittaker.

The young Rams were always a threat on the counter-attack, though, and they were soon level when a fine run by Louie Sibley found Max Bird to make it 1-1.

The Reds started brightly after the restart. The influential Jones drove at the Derby defence down the left and his inviting cross was narrowly missed by Van den Berg. The ball then fell kindly to Pedro Chirivella, who was unlucky to see his fierce effort hit the underside of the bar and stay out.

At the other end, Winterbottom made an unbelievable double save at point-blank range. Jayden Mitchell-Lawson broke free down the right flank and found Sibley - but his first strike was saved and the rebound was denied too.

Derby then took the lead on 58 minutes when Whittaker got clear and saw his shot just beat the outstretched hand of Winterbottom.

The Reds got level on 64 minutes and it was no surprise that it came through the creativity of Jones.

The U23s skipper got into space and delivered a cross which found Harvey Elliott at the back post, and his header was then turned into his own net by the unfortunate Jordan Brown.

Two minutes later, Jones almost put his side in front. Elliott’s right-wing cross was brilliantly hooked back into the danger zone by Chirivella and Jones sent his header inches over the bar.

The Reds were looking a real threat every time they broke into the Derby half.

A delightful touch by Luis Longstaff put Neco Williams away down the right. The Wales U19 international found the unmarked Herbie Kane but his attempt came back off the post.

The pressure eventually told on 80 minutes as Jones pounced to make it 3-2. A clever reverse pass from Longstaff released Elliott along the flank and his inviting low centre was turned home at the back post by the captain.

Six minutes from time, however, there was more penalty drama as Josh Shonibare went down under a challenge from Van den Berg.

The contact appeared minimal but the referee pointed to the spot, and this time Jahmal Hector-Ingram took responsibility and slotted the ball past Winterbottom for 3-3.

With time almost up, Liverpool had a strong claim for a spot-kick themselves but appeals were waved away after Williams played a superb ball into the box and Jones went down under a challenge.

Reflecting on an eventful 90 minutes, Critchley told Liverpoolfc.com: “I don’t think you could fault the attitude or the character of the players today in what was an eventful game to say the least.

“Curtis was a real handful for us. He is an outstanding young player when he is in the right frame of mind and today he was.

“His running off the ball and his work-rate was exceptional and I said to him at half-time, ‘You can win us this game’. And I thought he had when he scored to make it 3-2, a fantastic goal.

“I don’t like speaking about referees and I don’t like using them as an excuse but I thought both Derby penalties were debatable, particularly their second one, which I thought was extremely harsh.

“Right at the end, for me, we had a stonewall penalty at the end when Curtis was brought down. He was clipped and he went down but it wasn’t given.

“That would have possibly won us the game, which I felt the lads’ effort would have deserved today.”

Good to see Kane back playing, shame his loan move didn't come off but was a bit worried by how little we've seen of him.  It's a real bunch of individuals at the moment it seems.  Hopefully they bring it together and find some form.  Can't be easy with half the team probably with the first team a lot of the time.
