Refs awful teffed it like a Sunday league game when we have been in possession, Jones being kicked and shoved all game.

Liverpool U18s began their league season in impressive fashion with a stunning 7-1 away victory over Blackburn Rovers, writes Andy Kelly.

Doubles from strikers Layton Stewart and James Balagizi, plus two from midfielder Tom Hill and a Jake Cain strike, saw the young Reds to a decisive win despite difficult weather conditions.

A much-changed line-up from last season saw just two players, Cain and Leighton Clarkson, remain from the starting team in the FA Youth Cup final.

But a young side started impressively with full-backs James Norris and Jarell Quansah getting forward well.

Liverpool took the lead on eight minutes with Stewart pouncing on a loose ball to head home after Cain’s header had been fumbled by the Blackburn goalkeeper.

Ten minutes later and the lead was doubled. A fine Clarkson pass put Matteo Ritaccio in on goal but when his effort was saved Hill was on hand to head home.

Reds goalkeeper Ben Winterbottom was a spectator for most of the opening half hour but was on hand to deny his former Blackburn colleagues on 32 minutes when he turned away a goal-bound drive from Jalil Saadi.

The second half started well for the hosts and they reduced the deficit on 52 minutes when Jared Harlock slid home a good cross from Luke Brennan.

Any hopes of a comeback lasted just six minutes however, when the visitors extended their advantage.

A good turn from Tom Hill in midfield allowed him to play in Balagizi and he opened his body well to direct a right-foot shot into the bottom corner.

The big striker didn’t have to wait long for his second, slotting home impressively after a perfectly timed pass from Cain on 64 minutes.

Balagizi almost turned provider a short time later, his lovely chip met by Stewart’s diving header but somehow the ball slipped past the post.

Winterbottom made a flying stop to deny Blackburn sub Zak Gilsenan but it was at the other end where more goals would come.

A spell of possession ended with an incision on the left and when the ball was cut back Cain swept home the goal of the game with just over five minutes left.

Stewart grabbed his second with a delicate lift over the keeper two minutes later and Hill rounded off a fine display with a low left foot effort into the corner on the stroke of full-time to bring up a magnificent seven for Barry Lewtas’ team.

Liverpool U18s: Winterbottom, Quansah (Wilson, 85), Norris, Savage, Koumetio, Clarkson, Hill, Cain, Stewart, Ritaccio (Corness, 85), Balagizi (Beck, 75).

Where's Kane?  He hasn't gone on loan has he?

He was supposed to go out, dunno what the hold-up is.

Who is Balagizi? Never heard of him.

Also, on the bench for the 23s, who is Varesanovic?

Dal Varesanovic, 18-year-old Bosnian winger/wide midfielder, we've technically owned him for 2 years, but he wasn't cleared by FIFA, then wasn't fit.

As for Balagizi, all I know is that he's English, a midfielder, played for England Under-16s earlier in the year, and doesn't turn 16 til next month.

Liverpool U23s were defeated 4-0 by Tottenham Hotspur in their opening game of the Premier League 2 season on Saturday.

The young Reds created several presentable goalscoring chances throughout the contest at the Academy, but were undone by Spurs’ comparatively clinical finishing.

Tottenham took the lead in the seventh minute, when Dilan Markanday escaped Yasser Larouci and sent in a cross from the right, with a neat touch by Jamie Bowden enabling Kaziah Sterling to net the opener.

Liverpool responded strongly to that early setback, however.

Curtis Jones drove a shot over the crossbar, before a sharp one-two between Harvey Elliott and Rhian Brewster gave the latter the space he required to strike powerfully at goal, but Tottenham goalkeeper Brandon Austin was equal to the striker’s effort.

Elliott then created two chances in quick succession for Elijah Dixon-Bonner, who was first denied by TJ Eyoma’s last-ditch interception before then sending a header over the bar.

Bowden and Jones then exchanged attempts, the Liverpool midfielder forcing Austin into a fine stop after a weaving run into the box, but the visitors went in ahead at the interval.

Early in the second period, Pedro Chirivella found Brewster with an excellent pass, but the forward’s low cross targeting Dixon-Bonner had too much pace on it for the midfielder to make a connection.

Morgan Boyes sent a free header from a corner wide soon after, and the young Reds were made to pay for their profligacy by Tashan Oakley-Boothe with 64 minutes on the clock, when Tottenham’s No.10 turned in the area and finished emphatically.

Sterling, from the penalty spot, then netted his second of the afternoon and Shilow Tracey rounded off the scoring late on as Liverpool’s season got off to a frustrating start.

Liverpool U23s: George, Williams, Clayton, Boyes, Larouci (Gallacher, 81), Chirivella, Dixon-Bonner, Jones, Elliott (Bearne, 70), Kent, Brewster (Duncan, 70).

Unused subs: Atherton, Varesanovic.

Liverpool 1 Stoke 0

Against the run of play it has to be said, as we've struggled to get out of our own half in the early stages.

Stoke make a hash of clearing the ball from their box. Ritaccio picks the ball up midway in the Stoke half and threads a ball through to Jake Cain who is completely unmarked in the Stoke box. Jake rolls the ball past a helpless keeper to open the scoring.

Liverpool 1 Stoke 1

A deserved equaliser for the visitors. A deep cross from the Stoke left is headed back across goal from the far post, Winterbottom gets a hand on the ball but can only turn it on to the post. The ball bounces nicely for the incoming Stoke forward who has the easiest of tap ins from less than a yard out.

Liverpool 2 Stoke 1

We're back in front. We go a little more direct from midfield. Tom Hill finds Leighton Clarkson on the edge of the box, Clarkson flicks the ball back to Hill who takes a touch and finishes well across the visiting keeper.

Half time - Liverpool 2 Stoke 1

The visitors have been the better side in the first half. We've spent a lot of time in our defensive third as Stoke have pressed very high throughout the opening 45.

The opener came against the run of play in the early stages when we could barely get out of our own half. The goal obviously settled us down somewhat and we began to grow into the game. Every time we've gone a little more direct we've had a bit of joy getting in behind their back line.

Stoke deservedly got level midway through the half and have had numerous corners as they looked to get themselves in front, however, they don't look to great at the back and we capitalised on a sloppy clearance which led to Tom Hill putting us back in front.
