Liverpool U18s followed up their FA Youth Cup final win by overcoming Manchester City again with a 1-0 league victory on Tuesday.

Jack Bearne struck early on at the Etihad Campus to ensure the young Reds overcame the Blues for the second time in the space of five days.

Victory means Barry Lewtas’ team sit three points adrift of U18 Premier League North leaders Derby County - who completed their season by beating Wolves 6-0 at the weekend - ahead of their last game of the campaign against Middlesbrough on Saturday.

However, the young Rams’ superior goal difference makes a turnaround at the top unlikely, with Liverpool already guaranteed to finish second in the division.

The visitors - playing with three central defenders and Neco Williams and Yasser Larouci as wing-backs - started on the front foot and City goalkeeper Cieran Slicker had already made two saves to deny Luis Longstaff and Larouci before Bearne’s 12th-minute opener.

Bobby Duncan set up the forward with a fine a through-ball, and he subsequently rounded Slicker and slotted home his fourth goal of the campaign.

Bearne forced Slicker into action again midway through the half after he’d cut inside from the left flank, before City’s ‘keeper stopped Duncan’s goal-bound effort following a neat turn by Liverpool’s No.10.

City, though, ended the first half strongly.

Keyendrah Simmonds’ shot from range went narrowly wide of Vitezslav Jaros’ goal, and nobody was on hand to convert Noah Ohio’s dangerous low cross two minutes before a break that came at the right time for the young Reds.

It was Liverpool who seized back control of proceedings immediately after the interval, however.

Slicker bested Duncan in a one-one-one created by Matteo Ritaccio’s excellent pass, and the ‘keeper prevented Bearne from doubling his tally in the hour mark after he’d escaped his defender with a brilliant turn.

The chances kept coming for Lewtas’ side, too, with substitute Abdi Sharif having an effort cleared off the line and Bearne rattling the post late on, but one goal proved enough to secure an impressive win.

Liverpool U18s: Jaros, N Williams, R Williams, Savage, Boyes, Larouci, Ritaccio (Sharif, 64), Dixon-Bonner (Clarkson, 52), Bearne, Longstaff, Duncan (O’Rourke, 86).

Unused substitutes: Winterbottom, Brookwell.

Team is :-

Jaros; N. Williams, Larouci, R. Williams, Boyes, Clarkson, Cain, Sharif, Bearne, Duncan, Glatzel.

Subs : Winterbottom, Savage, Longstaff, Dixon-Bonner, O’Rourke.

(For the record, a ten-goal margin would be enough, since we’d have outscored Derby, to put us into the national play-off against the winners of the South division, which this year is Arsenal. Anyway, it’s not happening. Carry on.)

Interesting read on Toni Silva's post-Liverpool life.  Seems a lot of the way his career has gone he blames on agents, although to be honest he could have done a bit more to develop physically at the time (although being caught between Ince and Sterling didn't exactly help him much).  I do seem to remember there being an issue with his contract when it was up, although that could be bollocks.

That U19s side though, good few players in there.  Who's the blond kid though, not Roddan is it?

Wisdom (Derby), Hansen (Basel), Robinson (Forest), Sterling (City), Shelvey (Newcastle), Suso (Milan) and Coady (Wolves) all done well enough.  Sama and Silva probably should have gotten higher in their careers so far, Morgan too should be a league player at least.

edit: not sure what's gone on with the picture,  site doesn't seem to like me posting pics recently.

U23s draw with Crewe in Kirkby friendly

Liverpool U23s played out a goalless draw with Crewe Alexandra in their first pre-season friendly of the summer at the Kirkby Academy on Wednesday, writes Ste Hunter.

Neil Critchley gave 16 players valuable minutes as the game was played on a half-hour each way basis.

Herbie Kane and Pedro Chirivella featured for the Reds following their loan spells last season, while Tom Clayton made a welcome return from the injury which saw him sidelined since January.

The lively Abdi Sharif, who recently penned his first professional contract with the club, went close on two occasions in the opening half.

The Scouse midfielder broke into the box following a fine run but could only drag his shot wide of the post.

A fine one-two with Luis Longstaff then presented Sharif with another opportunity but his goalbound effort was superbly blocked by a Crewe defender.

Neco Williams was unfortunate not to break the deadlock when a surging run from the right-back took him into the box, but his strike destined for the top corner was saved.

Another storming run from Sharif then fed Kane just outside the box. The midfielder fed a lovely pass into the path of Isaac Christie-Davies, but the Wales U21 international guided his shot wide.

The away side also hit the bar as the game ended goalless.

Critchley will now take his team on a three-match tour of Scotland, with fixtures against The Spartans FC, Hearts and Celtic arranged.

Liverpool U23s: Atherton, N. Williams, Gallacher, R. Williams (Clayton), Boyes (Koumetio), Chirivella (Ritaccio), Sharif, Longstaff (Bearne), Kane, Christie-Davies, O'Rourke (Dixon-Bonner).

Cain nets a double as U18s win Burton friendly

Jake Cain netted two brilliant free-kicks as Liverpool U18s beat Burton Albion 4-0 in a pre-season friendly at the Academy on Wednesday afternoon.

Barry Lewtas' side played some delightful football at times as they enjoyed their first minutes following the summer break.

U16 player Cannonier Oakley netted the opening goal before Cain made it 2-0 with a superb curled free-kick.

Niall Brookwell then put the finishing touches on a brilliant team move to add the third goal.

The lively No.9 Layton Stewart was unfortunate not to net a second-half hat-trick.

He fired one effort inches wide after a sweet turn on the edge of the box, was denied by a brilliant save at point-blank range and then sent a diving header just past the post.

Cain added the fourth following a brilliant low drilled free-kick.

Reflecting on the outing, Lewtas told Liverpoolfc.com: "It was good to give the boys their first minutes of pre-season and it was a pleasing performance.

"Jake scored two great free-kicks and he and Leighton Clarkson are capable of doing that for us.

"We had a lot of first-year scholars and it was good to give them a first experience at U18 level."

The 21s will play Accrington Stanley, Fleetwood and Oldham in Group B of the EFL Trophy Northern section.

All 3 games in the group stage are played away from home.

Happy that the club have entered this competition for the first time, and really look forward to seeing how our lads get on. A Wembley final should be a great incentive for the lads.

Top 2 in each group qualify for the knockout stages, which the will remain regionalised until the quarter finals of the competition, when it will then become an open draw.

The 18s enjoyed a 5-0 win over Bury earlier today to make it 9 goals in 2 friendlies so far this pre-season.

Offal

Liverpool U18s produced an impressive display as they swept aside Bury 5-0 in a friendly at the Academy on Saturday morning.

Layton Stewart netted twice with Jake Cain, Leighton Clarkson and James Balagizi also on the mark.

Bury made a bright start but found Reds stopper Ben Winterbottom a tough obstacle to get past as he made a couple of fine saves.

Barry Lewtas' side lost right-back Jack Walls early on after he made a superb last-ditch challenge to deny Bury a certain goal following a quickly-taken free-kick.

After a lengthy stoppage Walls was treated by Dr Jim Moxon and his medical staff, and he was stretchered off with what appeared to be a jaw injury.

The young Reds quickly got into their stride when the action resumed and scored four goals inside 25 minutes.

Balagizi opened the scoring when he darted into the penalty area and converted with a lovely finish as he lifted the ball over the goalkeeper.

Cain then made a clever run down the left flank before producing a superb low cross into the path of Stewart, who slotted home for 2-0.

Clarkson got himself on the scoresheet by putting the finishing touches to an excellent team move and Cain made it 4-0 with another brilliant finish before the break.

There was one further goal in the second half - Stewart pounced to net from close range.

Reflecting on the win, Lewtas told Liverpoolfc.com: "It was a really good performance by the boys and we scored some nice goals.

"We played some really good attacking football and could have scored a few more goals in the end.

"It was a shame to lose Jack after he made a brilliant interception so hopefully he will be OK."

The 23s started their training camp in Scotland with a 1-0 win over Spartans earlier today. Jack Bearne coming off the bench to score the only goal of the game late on.

Offal

Jack Bearne grabbed a late winner as Liverpool U23s lifted the Ronnie Swan trophy in Edinburgh after a 1-0 win over The Spartans FC.

The 17-year-old made the most of a defensive lapse to turn home the winner just seven minutes from time in a well contested pre-season game which marked the 10th anniversary of the Spartan’s community arm.

With many members of the U23s' squad heading to the USA with Jürgen Klopp’s first team on Tuesday, it was a young side which took the field in front of a fine crowd of more than 1,500 supporters.

The young Reds dominated first half possession with the two-time Lowland League champions dropping off and looking to hit on the break through Scott Maxwell.

It took a stunning save from Spartans goalkeeper Blair Caswell to stop Liverpool taking the lead on eight minutes.

Right back Neco Williams was played in out wide and his cross was turned goalwards by Isaac Christie-Davis but Caswell was out well to smother.

The match settled into a rhythm with the Reds trying to create an opening in the Spartans defence but with the hosts defending in numbers.

Indeed five minutes from the break they produced their own effort on goal, centre back Michael Bolochoweckyl finding the ball at his feet after a corner but Ben Winterbottom gathered his shot low to his left.

The last effort of the first half came from Pedro Chirivella but the Spaniard’s half volley from the edge of the box was dragged just wide after more good work from Williams on the right.

Liverpool made six half time changes with Tom Clayton, Tony Gallacher, Matteo Ritaccio, Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Bearne all coming on while Shamal George took over in goal.

And George was called into action to make two fine saves early in the period, twice denying Blair Atkinson as he cut in from the left.

On the hour Nicky Reid headed over after a good ball in from the left as the home side continued to threaten.

Substitute Ritaccio hit a low curler just wide of the post as the young Reds responded well with Luis Longstaff impressing in the second period.

And with less than 10 minutes left the visitors went ahead in slightly fortuitous circumstances.

Carswell couldn’t control a high back pass and when the ball went loose Bearne was on hand to turn home from the edge of the box.

Longstaff went close late on but the young Reds had done enough to begin their four-day training camp in Scotland with a win.

U23s manager Neil Critchley said: “We’re fortunate we get invitations like this and we’re honoured to have played a part in these 10th anniversary celebrations.

“The way we’ve been looked after and received is fantastic.

“It was a good evening and with positives to take from the performance as well. We were a little bit disjointed at times but that was understandable given the personnel we had at times.

“Now we’ve got two more training sessions here in Scotland and a game against Hearts at their stadium on Thursday which is a really good game for us to look forward to.

“It’s good to get the group away and pre-season is always important.”

Liverpool U23s: Winterbottom (George, 46), N Williams (Bearne, 46), Johnston (Gallacher, 46), R Williams (Clayton, 46), Boyes, Chirivella (Dixon-Bonner, 46), Kane (Ritaccio, 46), Sharif, O’Rourke, Christie-Davies (Varesanovic, 75), Longstaff.

The 23s followed up their 1-0 win against Spartans with a 2-1 win over Hearts in a behind closed doors friendly at Tynecastle earlier today.

Offal

Liam Millar netted the winner as Liverpool U23s brought their two-game tour of Scotland to a close with a 2-1 victory over Heart of Midlothian at Tynecastle.

After Monday’s 1-0 win over The Spartans FC, Neil Critchley’s side were given the opportunity to play at a first-team stadium in a behind-closed-doors fixture on Thursday.

The hosts took the lead but Jack Bearne, who scored the decisive goal against Spartans, levelled with a good finish.

Luis Longstaff was then brought down by the Hearts goalkeeper and Canada international Millar made no mistake from the spot.

Reflecting on the win, U23s boss Critchley told Liverpoolfc.com: “It was great for the boys to play at Tynecastle and it was another good performance.

“We have had a good time in Scotland both on and off the pitch and managed to build up minutes for the players which is the most important thing in pre-season.

“It was good to give Ovie Ejaria his first 45 minutes but unfortunately we lost Rhys Williams after 20 minutes with an ankle injury. We will assess him on Friday morning but we are hopeful it’s not serious and he will be OK.”

The U23s are back in action on Sunday when they will face Merseyside neighbours Marine. The match at the Marine Travel Arena kicks off at 2pm BST and admission is £5 for adults and £3 concessions.

A busy period continues three days later as the squad head to Rugby Town’s Butlin Road to take on Coventry City on Wednesday July 24.

That game kicks off at 7pm and tickets are available in advance from the hosts priced £9 for adults, £7 concessions (over 60 and 16-21) and £2 for U16s. Cash prices on the turnstile will be an extra £1.

The 18s continued their winning ways in pre-season with a hard fought 4-3 victory over Celtic earlier today.

Offal

Liverpool U18s beat Celtic 4-3 in a thrilling behind-closed-doors friendly in Glasgow on Saturday.

Jake Cain opened the scoring for the Reds with a brilliant free-kick before other goals from Layton Stewart, Leighton Clarkson and James Norris put the visitors 4-1 up at half-time.

Celtic scored twice after the break but Barry Lewtas' side held on to earn their third victory of the pre-season.

Speaking after the match, Lewtas told Liverpoolfc.com: "We played some really good stuff, passed the ball really well and created a lot of chances.

"It was a real good workout for us against a good team.

"In the second half they came out a little bit more and put us under a little bit of pressure, but it was still a good performance."
