Liverpool U18s win Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup

Liverpool U18s won the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup by coming from behind to beat Rapid Vienna 3-2 in Sunday's final, writes Sam Williams.

The young Reds travelled to Stuttgart to take part in the prestigious two-day indoor tournament and qualified for the semi-finals by advancing through the group stage on Saturday.

After losing 4-3 to Atlanta United in their opening pool match, Barry Lewtas' side responded strongly to register victories over VFB Stuttgart and FC Schalke 04.

Hosts Stuttgart were defeated 1-0 courtesy of Jack Walls, before strikes from Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Fidel O'Rourke saw off Schalke 2-1.

(There ought to be some reference here to the other two group games played on Sunday morning, a 1-1 draw with Hertha Berlin and a 4-2 defeat by Rapid in a game that was played after both teams had already qualified for the semi-finals, but clearly the offal can't get the staff - CV.)

Another German opponent, Bayern Munich, awaited in Sunday's last-four match, and Jake Cain netted decisively to book Liverpool's spot in the final with a 1-0 win.

Vienna opened the scoring in the showpiece game, but Abdi Sharif, O'Rourke and Remi Savage made it 3-1 to the young Reds, who then held on to claim the trophy after the Austrian outfit had pulled one back.

Atlanta Utd 4 LFC 3

It took us half the game to get going, then when we did we scored three goals in a hurry. Their winner was a classy looking goal. They lost four of their next five games and finished last in the tournament.

LFC 1 VFB Stuttgart 0

This seriously underestimates how well Jaros played, there were another ten saves that they could have shown, and we scored with our only shot on target.

LFC 2 Schalke 1

Two really well-taken goals, although the highlights disguise how much of the game we spent defending.

LFC 1 Hertha 1

Another game where we spent a long time on the back foot.

Rapid Vienna 4 LFC 2

Even allowing for the fact that both teams had already qualified for the semi-finals before it was played, they deserved to beat us, both in terms of tempo and technique; their second goal is a good example of how they used the walls as an 'extra team-mate' in a way that we never managed.

LFC 1 Bayern Munchen 0

Bayern in a semi-final? Never in doubt...

More seriously, we looked more defensively secure in the last 5 minutes here than in any of the other games.

LFC 3 Rapid Vienna 2

Earlier form reversed. Maybe we hadn't been at our best three hours before, maybe they just ran out of steam, or maybe it was down to us playing Fidel O'Rourke - the only specialist striker in the squad - for longer shifts, who can say?

Anyway, we won.

While we're waiting for Jug-Ears and the gang to make snide references to Turf Moor 2005, just time to point out that we're playing an Under-23 game tonight Vs. Spurs at Stevenage (no telly, obviously). Reportedly the team is :-  McKenzie-Lyle; Juanma, Johnston, Whelan, Masterson, N. Williams, Coyle, Randall, Chirivella, Duncan, Millar. Subs : Atherton, R. Williams, McAuley, Glatzel.

15 minutes gone, no score so far.

Coyle on the mark as U23s earn Tottenham draw

Liam Coyle was on the mark as Liverpool U23s played out a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League 2 encounter at Stevenage on Monday night, writes Steve Hunter.

With a number of regulars in action for the first XI at Wolves such as Curtis Jones, Rafael Camacho and Ki-Jana Hoever, Neil Critchley fielded a young side with Bobby Duncan making his first start at U23 level in attack. There was also the welcome return to action of Connor Randall, who has been sidelined since September with a fractured cheekbone.

After a goalless opening half, the home side took the lead on 49 minutes through Kazaiah Sterling. However, Critchley’s side gave a good account of themselves and deservedly levelled on 65 minutes courtesy of Coyle’s fine effort from outside the box.

Reflecting on the draw, Critchley told Liverpoolfc.com: “It was an even first half with not many clear-cut chances. In the second half at times we had to defend in numbers and show our resilience which we did. Our honesty and endeavour was brilliant and that was very pleasing.”

Liverpool U23s: McKenzie-Lyle, N Williams, Juanma, Masterson, Johnston, Whelan, Coyle (R Williams, 83), Randall, Millar, Chirivella, Duncan (McAuley, 65).

The team that was shown on that now-deleted graphic above was :

Jaros; Walls, Larouci, R. Williams, Savage, Clarkson, Cain, Sharif, Longstaff, Glatzel, O'Rourke.

Subs : B. Williams, Brookwell, Dixon-Bonner, Bearne

Half an hour gone, still 0-0; Sunderland have barely been in our half, but we haven't made the most of the possession, particularly our set-pieces.

Liverpool 1 Sunderland 0

Deadlock broken. Luis Longstaff with a good right footed finish opens the scoring.

A short corner from Clarkson finds Longstaff in the 18 yard box, he shapes as to shoot with his stronger left foot before shifting the ball to his right foot and whipping in an effort at the keepers' near post.

Match report: 10-man U23s cruelly denied by Brighton

Liverpool U23s had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion at the Academy despite leading for the majority of the game with 10 men, writes Chris Shaw.

Rafael Camacho’s clinical early finish opened the scoring in a Premier League 2 clash punctuated by the harsh dismissal of the Reds’ Ki-Jana Hoever midway through the first half. Neil Critchley’s side dug deep to keep Brighton out for long periods but their pressure told four minutes from time, when Haydon Roberts headed home to snatch a point.

Curtis Jones warned the visitors of Liverpool’s intentions with a dipping, seventh-minute drive from the left edge of the area that Brighton goalkeeper Hugo Keto carefully touched over the crossbar, but the hosts clinched the breakthrough soon after.

The away team squandered possession in their own territory and Camacho delivered the maximum punishment when the ball came to him in a central position. The Portugal youth international, who made his senior debut for the club a week ago, settled himself 20 yards out and threaded a precise left-footer into the bottom right corner for 1-0.

Brighton threatened a rapid response on the quarter-hour, with the young Reds relieved to see a neat passing routine end with Aaron Connolly’s curler going wide of the post.

Liverpool’s momentum was unexpectedly halted when Hoever was sent off in the 21st minute. The defender was guilty of a foul on Connolly at the edge of the box as the forward ran through but with George Johnston still blocking his route to goal, the home team were aggrieved by the straight red card shown by the referee.

Not that they allowed the disappointment to influence their performance; Pedro Chirivella sent strikes at the ‘keeper and narrowly wide respectively, either side of a Max Sanders hit well saved by Caoimhin Kelleher, and Camacho powered a free-kick, won when the Liverpool No.10 was clumsily felled by Warren O’Hora, just off target before the break.

Brighton introduced Viktor Gyokeres at the outset of the second half and the substitute might have claimed an equaliser within 60 seconds of the action’s resumption. Having cut inside and threaded a finish from right to left, though, he watched the ball spin wide.

Camacho went even closer with a similar piece of individual skill at the other end on 48 minutes. The 18-year-old scooped Adam Lewis’ pass into the area, turned past Roberts and cracked a curler off the upright. Jones drew a decent save from Keto after a clever solo dribble as the game continued to flow evenly despite Liverpool’s numerical deficit.

As the minutes ticked away, O’Hora fired over the crossbar when a Brighton corner from the right caused a scramble and the ball fell kindly, but just when it looked as though Critchley’s charges would successfully preserve their advantage, Roberts met a superb Alex Cochrane cross from the left wing with a rising header beyond the reach of Kelleher to salvage a draw.

Liverpool U23s: Kelleher, Whelan, Lewis, Hoever, Johnston, Chirivella, Randall (Masterson, 59), Christie-Davies, Millar, Camacho, Jones.

Unused substitutes: McKenzie-Lyle, Juanma, Coyle, Glatzel.

Maddening. We'll appeal the red card, of course, but that won't bring back our apples.
