Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been fined £8,000 and warned as to his future conduct after he admitted an Football Association misconduct charge for post-match comments on Boxing Day.

Rodgers called the performance of the officials "horrendous" in the wake of his side's 2-1 defeat by Manchester City and also questioned the wisdom of allowing Bolton-based referee Lee Mason to take charge of a game involving a Manchester club.

He later denied disputing the integrity of the officials, arguing he was "only speaking honestly after the game" and decided not to contest the FA charge.

An FA statement read: "Rodgers was charged for a breach of FA Rule E3 in that his post-match comments following Liverpool's game at Manchester City on 26 December 2013 constituted improper conduct in that they called into question the integrity of the match referee, and/or implied that the match referee was motivated by bias; and/or brought the game into disrepute; and/or amounted to a failure to act in the best interests of the game."

Rodgers' reaction on Boxing Day

The Irishman had been infuriated by an incorrect offside decision against Raheem Sterling with the City game still goalless, and he also felt Luis Suarez should have been awarded a second-half penalty.

Explaining his post-match comments the day after the defeat, Rodgers said: "I certainly wasn't questioning the integrity of referees.

"(The comment) was more than logical in terms of having a referee from that part of the world refereeing a game in Manchester.

"I wouldn't suspect that Mike Dean, from the Wirral, has refereed many games for Liverpool over the years.

"I was only speaking honestly after the game. I think the FA and the Referees' Association know perfectly well I am someone who engages in supporting the referees."

Until the authorities address the issue of transparency and accountability from match officials, the managers and players are always going to be put in a situation where they occasionally end up saying things that are considered to be out of line. Out of all those individuals that can play a direct role in the outcome of a match and the events that unfold within, it's only the officials that are not made to explain themselves and yet the others are frequently asked for their views when emotions are still running high.

Very true, it's strange that the only people who should be disinterested in the outcome and able to speak without bias are the ones we never hear from. It creates this idea that there's no accountability, that poor decisions have no meaning, which in turn leads to managers and players trying to influence decisions by applying pressure.

I just wish Rodgers had waited until after the Chelsea game when he could have really gone for Webb.

From the main page, you see 'Brendan Rodgers has been fi...'. For a minute I genuinely thought he might have got the sack.

Referees...

Not answerable to anyone.

Anyone speaks out/criticises them they get punished for it.

Biased for/against certain teams.

Wear black uniforms.

Do hand signals.

Remind you of anyone?

Meh, we all knew he was in trouble as soon as he implied bias rather than just calling a shit ref performance what it was... shit.

He only implied bias though, moyes has outright stated refs are against them. It will be interesting to see how his punishment shapes up.

Moyes' reported remarks were preposterous.

The supply of cheap penalties bought on the back of dives and spineless refereeing has dried up and he's not happy.

Brendan has been fined for suggesting that Mason is a better ref than he actually is. To be biased he would need to be competent in identifying a foul but not awarding it because he favours one side over the other. Actually he is so poor he doesn't see the foul in the first place.
