Surprised to say the least.

West Brom have sacked head coach Steve Clarke, the Barclays Premier League club have announced.

The club revealed only late last month that they planned to hold contract talks with the Scot in the new year.

However, Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Cardiff was the Baggies' fourth in a row leaving them 16th in the league.

Bad run: Steve Clarke has been sacked by West Brom after winning just seven games this year

The club announced their decision to dispense with Clarke, and place him on gardening leave, was the unanimous decision of the board of directors with the Baggies just two points and two places above the relegation zone.

Assistant Kevin Keen has also been placed on gardening leave.

The club have won only seven of their 34 Premier League games during the calendar year - a 20 per cent win percentage yielding a total of only 31 points.

Joint-assistant head coach Keith Downing will assume control of first-team affairs while the club search for Clarke's successor.

Mixed emotions: Frazier Campbell celebrates Cardiff's winner as Liam Ridgewell and Claudio Yacob look on

Sporting and technical director Richard Garlick told the club's official website: 'We have reluctantly come to the decision to relieve Steve of his duties after very careful consideration.

'It has been well documented that we have not had the rub of the green in certain games this season but that does not cloud the generally disappointing points return during this calendar year, culminating in today's fourth-successive defeat at Cardiff.

'This club's track record proves we do not take such decisions lightly, having only enforced a change in this position three times in approximately 14 years.

Beaten man: Clarke looks dejected on the touchline just hours before losing his job

'But with key games coming thick and fast, we felt it was important we acted now to give the club the best possible chance of a successful outcome this season.

'Our player wage bill is the highest in the club's history and we feel we have built a squad capable of being very competitive in the Premier League.

'We now begin the search to find a new head coach who will work within our existing structure, which has been in place for the past six years.'

He added: "On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Steve and Kevin for their efforts over the past 18 months.

'We wish them and their families well for the future.'

Clarke, who took over at The Hawthorns in June 2012, was out of the contract at the end of the season.

The 50-year-old replaced Roy Hodgson, after he had been appointed England manager, at the Black Country club in what was his first managerial role having previously been assistant manager at Chelsea, West Ham and Liverpool.

While the Baggies are currently struggling, Clarke had guided them to eighth last season.

If there's any way we can bring him back to Liverpool to sort out the defence, we should do it. It might be hard for him to be a no.2 now that he has tasted the top job, but maybe, having tasted it, he might decide it's not for him?

He's tasted number one and number two? Is this another transsexual and a football manager sex scandal?

lol, some people seriously want him to come here and sort our defense out? His record in WBA's last 38 games is an abomination, every manager he worked under was fired, he plays low defense line with 2 banks of 4 and fucking grafters in midfield, it's not a good defense and Rodgers doesn't want to play that way, he left the worse team than the one he took over from Woy. Mourinho said some kind words about him some time ago, people nostalgically associate him with King Kenny and his time here and feel some sympathy towards him, while all the numbers & results speak for itself. He's a mediocre coach and our issues in defense come mainly from sickening individual errors, playing high line with players who don't get it and majority of our defenders simply not being good enough. Rodgers needs help but from someone who has experience of working with some proper acknowledged defensive-minded manager with understanding of the modern style defensive setup.. Pako Ayestaran for example. He has still some unfinished business here.

Its a myth that he done some amazing job here and we had a great defense, seriously anyone who wants him back is fucking clueless.

I can't remember anyone giving us a battering when he was here. We let hull put three in our net two weeks ago, if it wasn't for Ming everton would've hit six the week before that. Clean sheets are proving hard to get.

We look a shambles defending set pieces and corners and we've got to go to man city and chelsea in the next two weeks. I admire your optimism though.

Isn't this almost exactly the same situation to when Di Matteo got sacked? The team was on a very poor run of form, but never actually even in the relegation zone.

Quite a lot of people were agreeing with the sacking, and saying what an inspired choice it was to get Roy Hodgson in. Then, when they stayed up, despite obviously nobody knowing for certain whether they would have done anyway, everyone gave themselves a richly deserved pat on the back.

Found both sackings purely fucking mental. They're West Brom, for fuck sake.

AC Real Baggiepool.

Seriously though, the amount that the vast majority of suits at clubs know about football, sport, or seemingly even how a fucking league works, could be written down on one of Aspas' calf muscles.

I can just about understand managerial sackings at very high profile, very rich clubs when there's a really bad run of form, even if I don't agree with it. Surely smaller clubs realise that stability is the answer to mega-money. You find a guy like Pulis or Clarke and you give him time, through the ups and downs, to pull it out of the fire. Unless you're giving him hundreds and hundreds of millions, what do they expect from guys like him? It's mad, this game. Shanks wouldn't have lasted too long at West Brom these days. Ferguson neither.

That penalty chelsea got against west brom would never have been given if fergurson was in charge of west brom, and if it was David Gill and the fergurson bum boys in the media would've made sure the refs career was over. As mark halsey said in his book " you've got to earn sir alex's respect" after contravening fa rules by being in text contact with fergurson.

Europe is another kettle of fish, that's why all at old trafford and the whole british media were in disbelief and shock that a referee could send of nani at old trafford against real madrid when all he did was attempt heart surgery on arbelloa by putting his studs in his chest when the ball wasl twenty yards away.

Only 7 games won in 2013, 7 from 34. That kind of result would get anybody sacked. That and no Lukaku.

the whole Lukaku carrying West Brom last year thing is a bit of a myth, he was actually on the bench a lot of the time despite having an excellent goal record and at least 6 of his goals (1 in each game against us, hattrick v Mancs and against Sunderland) were scored as substitute

Just one of a myriad of reasons that I find myself attempting to care less and less about football. I really wish I could fuck it off.

I've been on that Bus for a while mate. I thought it was taking me to the coast for a nice, relaxing retirement, but it keeps breaking down and choking me with fumes.

Come and sit next to me here and watch the in flight film. It's called "what teenage lesbi friends Amy and Molly did with the Zucchini". It's only just started and they haven't gone out into the vegetable patch yet.

Eventually the Bus just drops you off where you started from once the film ends. It's like Franz Kafka only with Chlorophyl and bad acting.
