My mother in law isn't deaf but habitually says "what?" as soon as you start speaking, so you have to finish the sentence and then say it all again.

Mrs O'T has a habit of talking to me when we're not in the same room.  Either she will start speaking before she comes into the room, or she'll keep talking after I've left.

It's like I'm living in that scene in The Phantom Raspberry Blower of Old London Town, where Joan Sims is in the police station giving a witness statement and Ronnie Corbett just fucks off down the pub and they carry on their conversation as normal.

My missus does that. Usually results in her telling me that she told 2 weeks ago she was going out on Sunday for lunch. She has also has it down to a fine art of telling me shit when *** are playing ******** and she knows I'm not paying any attention.

Mrs Hicks has an annoying habit of reading her phone whilst I’m talking to her, getting huffy if I say she’s not listening then when the thing I was telling her about actually happens eg me going away for work, she claims I never told her. It’s been 18 years of this now.

To be fair watching QOS play Arbroath isn’t quite “I’m watching the match ffs” gear

As well as my eyesight going my hearing is probably even worse.

She has this horrible trait of walking away as she starts speaking to me or starting a sentence and stopping midpoint as she’s been distracted by a fleck of tiny dust in the mid distance of her vision.

We then either argue about her never finishing a sentence or me being a deaf cunt.

My vote is for the latter

All joking aside I know I need a hearing aid in one ear and would probably be classed as at least partially deaf in that ear and the other isn’t much better.

I’m just being an ignorant twat and pretending it’ll either go away or everyone else has to compromise for me.

I don't get the whole thing, or delay in people that clearly need a hearing aid in actually getting one, unless of course the price is an issue, which in that case, is fair enough

My mother in law badly needs hearing aids, just constantly shouts or says what, all the fucking time. My missus always says she needs to get her ears checked, and her reply is always, I'll have to do that.

No one has an issue with getting glasses when the eyesight goes, so why the stigma when your hearing is on the wain.

Now back on topic.

Little things that annoy me

Players putting their hands up at corner kicks and free kicks.

What a load of bollocks. As if the guy taking the corner/free can actually pop the ball directly onto their dome. Fucking idiots

Hearing is the taboo loss of sense. As you say eyes are legitimate and nobody loses taste, touch or smell.

I took have shit hearing, well I hear stuff but if there is certain background noise I can no longer process what is being said. You'd expect it to be a volume thing that is most likely affected by father time but surely processing suggests diminishing mental faculties. I'm fucked!

Looks like I misremembered a detail: it wasn't Joan Sims at all.

I just remember the phantom on The Two Ronnies.  As daft as it sounds it started a bit of a raspberry blowing fad in our school. Around 1976/77 iirc.

We had the same craze. It'd be a shocked article on the Mail these days, a couple of months after a brief lived Tiktok fad.

Hear you there, mate. My Mrs does that too, and when I shout “what?” she just says it again at the same volume, repeatedly until I lose my rag and scream “I CANT HEAR YOU!”

I’ve got new Sofas being delivered on Tuesday and decided to donate my old ones to a charity instead of selling them as they are still in good nick.

They were supposed to be getting collected tomorrow but the charity have now said they can’t collect them until Friday.

My living room is going to look like fucking DFS now the twats. Tempted to take a hammer and saw to the bastards and do a load of tip runs in the car.

My arl bod was as deaf as a post for at least 30 years before he died, but he was a vain bastard, and that's why he wouldn't get hearing aids, didn't want to be seen as 'weak'.

The fact that he was 9 stone dripping wet didn't bother him when it came to looking weak.

Poor fella. My dad’s similar. His ankles are fucked and he struggles to walk properly but despite me getting him two pairs of proper hiking boots in the last few years that are both comfy and supportive, he wears the same boots he’s had for years. Stubborn bastard “I’m fine” well don’t fucking moan then.

They have spirit we could only dream of this day in age
