Gutted.  A really saddening day.

The world is a poorer place.

I discovered Transformer when I was 14 after watching U2 at Live Aid incorporate some songs I'd never heard into Bad.  That was the first step of my musical education.  Went to Backtracks in Button Street and sang "And all the coloured girls sing Do Da Do..." and the bloke sold me Transformer (ah the days before Shazam and the internet and artist correlation software....).

It changed my life.  It was the music I'd been waiting to hear if you know what I mean.  I wanted someone to sing like that, about things like that to music like that.  And here it was - genuinely exciting.

Everyone was listening to Wham and all that rubbish and me and my mates knew every word to every song on Transformer.

From there, it was a short step to Velvet Underground and a whole world of truly underground / counterculture (not in the Scott McKenzie sense).

Saw the Velvets at Glastonbury.  He was as prickly as ever.

His back-catalogue is astounding.  He will be truly missed.
