Electric Meter Has Stopped Working

Got a call the other day from the Electric Company asking to read the meter, as they haven't come since 2011 and I have been getting automated bills.

They came today and the meter was broken.

They said they are going to get a new meter and he said "I don't know how they are going to work out how much to charge you!"

Anyone had this issue before?

The annoying thing is when they replaced the meter in 2011 I was in credit by £500 and I had just left that in my account paying off the bills I received.

Wonder what they'll do, hope I don't lose my credit.

No, mate. Never. Hope this helps.

It is a weird one.

Not sure how they can measure how much electric has been used.

I guess I will just have the usual automated bill, like usual?!

They'll estimate your usage and bill you for the period. If you've lived there a while and have had correct readings that estimate should be quite accurate. If you think it's too high you could suggest paying some of the bill, then using 12 months worth of correct usage to refine the estimate.

That sounds logical.

Thanks.

If you were a pensioner I'd be round to open all the windows and turn the gas off, it's the only way to hit my targets.

I'm on a distribution list at work from our revenue protection units, they catch loads of theft of gas and send a photo out every week showing a dodgy fiddle or often a downright dangerous rig consisting of hose pipe and gaffer tape. It's usually a take away and how more don't blow up is beyond me.

Gripped!

In the brave new world of smart meters the meter will flag that it's poorly and we'll swap it before you know.

I think that's what has happened.

If I got installed a new one in 2011 I guess that's a smart meter?!

If you are with BG then it's possible but they are a very early variant and one that's not being fitted anymore. Did you have an in home display?

We have our own service over here, so not with BG.

Not sure what you mean by "in home display" - but it showed the numbers.
