Great performances that were overshadowed.

The reason the performance was overshadowed can be anything; a better performance from another player, a red card, some kind of violence, even a mistake that player made, or anything else that just took the light away from a particular player's display.

My first thought is Milan Baros in Istanbul. I didn't catch it at first, but in subsequent rewatches, I thought he put in a tireless display of running, his movement was beautiful, he held up the ball well and I thought he took two of the best Cb's of their generation - Nesta and Stam - for a ride. Naturally, it was overshadowed, because Gerrard, Carragher, Rafa and Hamman had the performances of their footballing lives.

Another would be Sissoko in Cardiff, when Gerrard would not be denied.

Over to you. It needn't be Liverpool, either.

Pongolle vs Olympiakos - actually Gerrard was poor in that match until he scored that cracking goal.  Could have been sent off at one point in the second half.

Pretty much all of Alonso's time here, I used to get loads of stick from opposition fans when they claimed Stevie and Torres were our only 2 top class players and I'd mention Xabi (Masch and Carra too) in response but they wouldn't have it, then he left and they all realised....... and I haven't stopped crying since cos I miss him

bang on with Xabi Alonso.

Similarly, Paul Lambert with Celtic. Talk to any fan and they will praise Larsson & Lennon but fuck me, that man was exceptional. CL medal in his back pocket too.

I aint the biggest fan of Andy Carroll, but if it wasnt for him, Miller would have scores at Wembley in the 92nd minute, he chase the shot down and forced him to fire over, bizarrley I am always appreciative of that. £35m well spent!

Sami at the 1-4 at OT 2009, pretty sure he came in last minute and pissed on Ronaldo and Rooney for the whole game. Christ I love that game.

And with that, I believe it's time to flee the country.

Oh look, the 'Xabi can do no wrong' crowd are in town.

Sshhhh don't mention the 2007 and 2008 seasons either.....

Back on topic though Biscan in the semi against Chelsea...filling in for Alonso...and no I'm not picking on Alonso who I would love back here even now.

But I thought Biscan was great in that game and to be honest he was in a few of the games during that run, I also remember a cracking through ball for Garcia against Leverkusen.

Sissoko in the 2006 Cup Final as mentioned above was colossus when everyone else faded.

Going back to one of our all time great performances, the 5-0 over Forest, one man who does not got mentioned is Nigel Spackman, he had a great spell when Whelan was out, epitomised in that game and you could tell how desperate the crowd were for him to score when he was charging through for our 5th but unselfishly squared it to Aldo.

Guest Numero Veinticinco

In general, Xabi was terrific for us, and has been for Madrid. Not perfect, as he has an injury followed by a bad dip in form. I don't see that as a reason to put him down, though. Quality player.

Alonso in the 05/06 Derby at Anfield. Most people were talking about Gerrard getting sent off, while I was talking about one of the best all round midfield performances I'd ever seen from Alonso.

Immobile, though.

same season I remember him being brilliant at West Brom away and again in that same season I thought Momo and Didi were awesome against the Mancs at home in the FA Cup
