Desktop not starting up. Any ideas?

One day our desktop was fine and the next day when I went to turn it on it goes as if to start up, gets as far as the Opening Windows page and then just cuts out. Any ideas? (And I am not in the market to be binning it, which is really what I'd like to do.)
