Listen fucktards - Willian was a long standing target of Spurs' and AVB. It looks like he was on our list as of a week ago. All things being equal....he has been courted by AVB and Levy for some time and that would be the major factor here - we are not a significant step up from Spurs at this moment or vice versa but he'll go where he feels most wanted if the money and current status' of the team is similar. If we'd signed him I can assure you Spurs fans would have been moaning about how we'd nicked one of their targets - I know some of you are saying the same but Spurs were after him waaaay before us.

Onto Turan, Papadopolus, Hughes & that young striker from Holland

So are we ignoring the seemingly obvious outcome that Spurs are selling their best player?

Or are we just going to pretend that they have decided to strategically spend £130m to get back into the champions league?

Maybe when all the dissapointment subsides - we can look at the positive. Which is that we are at least trying to sign players of this calibre! Most of us have complained about signing players like Ince, Sinclair and the like - now we are showing a bit of ambition, we are getting criticised for that as well!

Obviously - we need to sign a player of this type before that criticism abates. But if Turan ends up at the club before the 2nd September then maybe a little bit of context can be added.

Thoroughly depressing stuff. I had some faith going into the summer that we could conceivably pip Spurs and Arsenal to 4th spot. Given our consistent inability to get our top targets and the amount that Spurs have strengthened (even without Bale) we have little to no chance of finishing ahead of them now.

Bit blunt there but true.

Bottom line is there is still time in the transfer window and if we start to feel sorry for ourselves then we are going into the new season with the current crop of players.

Move on to the next target and we take it from there.

Question, did you watch Willian play or are we just really annoyed that he choose Spurs over us?

I've never knowingly seen him play if I'm honest. It's just continually missing out on targets that I'm finding depressing. Missing out on one to Spurs offering what is a similar package is a grim reality check.

Good point, he'll know he wasn't our first choice. If there aren't players available, for the love of god don't spend for the sake of it. Plus, that'll give the conspiracy theorists some fuel.

I think you would be hard pressed to find many impartial people to say we are on par with Spurs at the moment

agree, lots of people are assuming these signings make stronger but the reliance on Bale last year was huge and other than Soldado none of these players are proven at the highest level, if they get Lamela then I'll be more worried about them but assuming Bale goes they currently have no players anywhere near the standard of Suarez, Stevie and Coutinho for a start

There is no positive here.

I'm not criticising anyone at the club because I don't know the details. I'm just gutted that we keep losing out on targets. It either points to us having issues with closing deals or we just aren't a pull any more. Either way, it's bad news.

From Andy Hunter of the Guardian

Liverpool are resigned to defeat in the pursuit of Willian, which is a good job having been out-bid by Tottenham and with the Brazilian reportedly undergoing a medical in London. The Anfield club were first to move for the midfielder following news of the budget-slashing at Anzhi Makhachkala and had made good progress on a £30m deal by the weekend, albeit without taking his signature for granted having missed out on Henrik Mkhitaryan and Diego Costa. That caution was well-placed when Spurs arrived with a better offer to both Anzhi and the player. Liverpool refused to go above their initial valuation and Willian is White Hart Lane bound as a result.
