Mkhitaryan

Predictably the folk who have a gripe against FSG/Rosgers/Ian Ayre/Old Mother Hubbard/Israel will be using this as a stick to beat them with without having any idea what actually went on.

We have a reasonable idea what went on. Because the club have clearly been feeding the story to the press. Not anticipating failure, obviously...

McNulty BBC:

Liverpool have lost out on one of their major transfer targets after Shakhtar Donetsk's Henrikh Mkhitaryan agreed a £21.5m move to Borussia Dortmund.

Manager Brendan Rodgers identified the 24-year-old forward as a top priority.

But the Reds were told on Friday that the Ukrainian side had done a deal with the Champions League finalists.

Liverpool were happy to meet the asking price for Mkhitaryan but it is believed they never got the chance to hold talks with the highly rated Armenian.

Rodgers had hoped to add Mkhitaryan to summer signings Kolo Toure from Manchester City, Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas and Sevilla's Luis Alberto.

Who knows what's going on.

Think this answers your question Major Tom.

If true, what the fuck is going on?

So in 3 weeks, we've not been able to hold a meeting with Mkhitaryan?

Sounds like bollocks put out by Ayre.

How would we know he was keen to come if we never spoke to him at all? And they were feeding the press that he wanted to come to us.

WTF? Are we talking about the player that we paid £35M for?

Pound for pound it's been a terrible deal however looking at it in context nobody would have believed we'd have managed to get 15million for Carroll after a season in which he has been injured at West Ham for months on end.

Most likely explanation - which is pretty much the official line: he chose another (clearly significantly better) team.

Well, yeah. I guess my point was the folk putting the boot into the club assumed we fucked up somewhere. It's quite possible we didn't and simply the player wasn't interested, like you say.

Exactly. 7 league goals in 24 matches.

I'm amazed that they wanted to still buy him.

And it's £15m rising to £17.5m.

In any event, reading back through his columns, he does seem to be "in the know" when it comes to Liverpool's intentions.

It was the Echo's sport editor John Thompson actually, mate. Said it on Talksport and loads of twitter were talking about it.

McNulty's a dick anyway.

Well that's embarrassing.

Just a bit?

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hopes to buy Shakhtar Donetsk's Henrikh Mkhitaryan for £20 million

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is poised for talks with Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan this week as he attempts to seal a £20 million deal.

As first revealed by Telegraph Sport, Rodgers has identified Mkhitaryan as his flagship signing for the summer and has tabled a bid which is believed to have triggered a release clause inserted into the 24-year-old’s contract by the Ukrainian champions.

Liverpool are now waiting for the go-ahead to meet the Armenia international, one of the most highly regarded playmakers in Europe, and are hopeful of completing a transfer that will represent a huge statement of intent.

Ian Ayre, the club’s managing director, cancelled a trip to attend an economics conference in Brazil to remain in England to assist in the deal and Liverpool will step up their bid to sign him in the next 48 hours.

Liverpool are understood to be aware of potential competition from a German club, possibly Borussia Dortmund, and know an impressive sales pitch is required to convince Mkhitaryan to move to Anfield.
