BBC Sport - Everton agree Roberto Martinez compensation with Wigan

Everton agree Roberto Martinez compensation with Wigan

Comments (27)

Everton have reached an agreement with Wigan over compensation for Roberto Martinez, who is expected to succeed David Moyes as Toffees manager.

The 39-year-old Spaniard is thought to have been Everton's first choice to replace Moyes, who signed a six-year contract to manage Manchester United.

Martinez said last month he would leave Wigan after four years at the helm.

"Bill Kenwright [Everton chairman] and myself have agreed a deal," Wigan chairman Dave Whelan told BBC Sport.

I'd really love to know what went on when he met Henry that time in the States..

I think theres definately a lot of risk factor there with this appointment but if he can keep the defence solid and then utilise his more attacking methods they are onto a good thing, hopefully the defence goes to pieces with his tactics though

apart from the Porto fella though he is probably the best of the candidates linked with the job, once Mark Hughes was snapped up I was hoping they'd go down the Neville/Stubbs/Weir/Big Dunc route

It'll be interesting to see what players he brings in with JJB gift vouchers.

Yeah wonder if he'll bring mcarthy and the keeper with him?

Hasn't McCarthy turned us down as well? More than once?

Ferguson's 2 derby performances per year were enough to turn him into a "club legend", if they sign McCarthy he'll make it onto their official roll of honour as first trophy since Britpop was all the rage.

I fully expect him bringing up the fact that he 'turned us down' in his opening press conference and for the bitters to swallow it up.

I reckon it'll go the other way. He'll be asked about it early doors, and react with something along the lines of Liverpool not being his focus, then bigging up Everton as a huge club in their own right with a longer history.

"We don't care...." will be the order of the day for the bitter fanbase.

Thanks for asking, but I'm afraid I can't bring the FA Cup with me....

Don't think Roberto needs to worry about his poor stats. He's joining a club who have won 0% of the competitions they have entered since 96.

Roberto Martinez - the most successful Everton manager since Joe Royle....
