The Anfield Redevelopment Plan - The David Conn article

Recommended Posts

Pretty damning on all concerned in Anfields' business 'corridors of power'

Anfield: the victims, the anger and Liverpool's shameful truth | David Conn | Football | The Guardian

or should that be 'corridors of cluelessness'.....

I could cite a Guardian conspiracy theory and argue that all the residents interviewed were Evertonians.....

.....it's tough being a red these days, no? Some fuckin' positive news over here please, ta!!

Have I read that wrong or is he trying to shift blame on to the club for murders in the Anfield area?

No, but if you have a road full of empty houses and just a few occupied then it attracts the elements who don't want people watching their every move, and they in turn are usually criminals.

Over the last few years, the club has been happy to throw millions at players who should never have got anywhere near Anfield (Joe Cole, Konchesky, Poulsen, etc) yet they won't pay a decent price to working-class people for their homes.

The various people in charge should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. Doubt they'll lose any sleep though!

Do we know that for sure? Maybe they did make good offers over market value and they decided to stay in any case?

Either way, the area is pretty derelict now so the Club I believe does have a social responsibility to make a good offer to these people in exchange for their houses.

If they still refuse then that's not the Club's fault if the area continues to deteriorate and market value decreases as a result.

It's a free market and I'm sure that no guns were held against anybodies heads (Metaphorically of course, before the smart arses come back and say that's just the problem) :-)

hey Trumo

you're right about previous posting but thought this article was more an expose of shitty practices by 'Big business' Anfield than centred around 'definitive stadium news' as such.

What is depressing about it I feel is that it's ANOTHER example of a 'long game' of lies and deception fucking over innocent people. Rotten stuff.

The days of any club being representative of 'the people' are long gone. They are vehicles for advertising, on the back of 'sports entertainment'.

American investors have no affinity Liverpool any more than some Arab owners have for Manchester, or London... it's just business and we are the punters. In many ways, we 'punters' are probably a necessary evil to them.... just a side show to add a bit of grit for the high flying / paying corporate guests and sponsors.

It's great if it just so happens that your owners manage to bring a bit of success to the team, and we all like to believe in the pipe dream that somehow a guy from South America has fallen in love with the city, but we're kidding ourselves.

"Our clubs is doing wonderful things for the fans".... yeah, bringing in decent catering, but charging 5 quid for a hotdog?

Giving you a nice presentation box with your season ticket, but upping the price by 50 quid? (and the car park prices too).

Earning even more money from the TV deals, but charging you 45 quid for a shirt that costs them about a fiver max?

There's still some great football to be seen in the game, but any faith in a club giving a toss about fans is woefully deluded. They care about punters, and as long as the next guy is willing to pay when you're not.... you can jog on as fair as they're concerned.

"Liverpool were motivated to buy neighbouring houses by a fear of losing pre-eminence in English football after their mighty playing success and financial dominance of the 1970s and 80s."
