Big debate on radio 2 today about this. people with a spare room in their council house will have to pay 14 quid per room a week or downsize.... bit harsh considering most people in social housing are on low incomes anyway and a lot have lived in these places for years and years???? Is it the government feeding the rich and screwing the poor as usual whislt covering up for bankers mistakes or should poor people in council houses have to pay up and get to fuck????

also, anyone listen to it this afternoon? got very heated like.

Fucking tory cunts.

Gotta love the loaded poll question.

It's a difficult one, my mum works in housing and they have lots of people living in family homes where the family have all left. Then there are young families desperate for larger properties (3 beds usually) living in small flats.

Yes, when you put it like that, it's a no brainer, at least in principle.

I recognise the need to utilise social housing stock better, but fail to see how taxing some of the poorest people out of it is fair.

I think there should be incentives given to move people to properties more befitting their needs.

Cunt of a government.

Im probably going to get slaughtered for this but I think that's the problem with our society today. Surely in a true socialist viewpoint the person in the house that's too big should be altruistic and move, allowing the one with the greater need to move in. In your example we are providing someone with a house, then rewarding them again for doing the decent thing - doesn't make sense to me.

Another of my bugbears is seeing council house with a £40k car on the drive or even worse a caravan. I see it loads and all over the country too. No idea how to sort it like but it's just not on to have that much cash and have subsidised housing.

In an ideal world people would give a large house up when they don't need it. Or move to a private house when they are earning enough. Unfortunately, it just doesn't happen.

Incentive doesn't have to mean cold hard cash, but could be decent re-housing offers, cover costs of moving, new furniture etc. Likely as not it would still be cheaper than emergency housing and taking action to move someone out.

But of course I would have got us in this mess by allowing the right to buy and prevent Council's from using the money to direct replacing their housing stock. Shortsighted cunts.

Where are the Lib Dems in all of this?

They're at home, washing their tights.

There's a rather large problem with the bedroom tax in that there's not enough suitable housing stock to go around. The housing association around here says it would take seven years to move everyone to something suitable. So even if people want to move, they face years of 'fines' for something they have no control over.

A shekup of some kind was needed though, I don't disagree with that. I just knew these idiots wouldn't be the ones to get it right.

If you ask to move and the council have nothing for you,you are still being charged.

Where i live they are starting a service charge if you live in flats. Why would somebody move out there house to pay more for a flat than the house they have

It would be reasonable if it was started with new tenancies, but people have been living in these homes for years and years.

Whether it gets pushed through for pensioners im not sure they wont backtrack. The oldies vote in their droves and are affected massively by this.

Bunch of tory cunts

It s going back to Thatcher 83 era with the tories again.

The unemployed will lose £28 a giro for being 1 bedroom over what they need.

There s going to be alot of people living rough again.

This can only end in trouble unless they totally rethink what there doing.

Interestingly though the Tories back then never fucked with the military or the police, this lot haven't even had the brains to do that. They've pissed everyone off at some stage and will continue to do so. Big business and extreme wealth is their only friend.

I can understand the need to do something but the fact this starts in April without any kind of transitional period and the fact the housing stock is not really suitable to move people into is madness.

It should apply to people coming into the social housing market and be phased into the existing tenants over a period of time while they create some suitable homes, it wasn't too long ago they were blowing the tower blocks up, seems we will be building them again soon. Progress.

It's not a tax, it's a reduction of benefit.

Our estate, most of Gwynedd are having all their housing assc homes improved, they needed it - my bathroom was a portacabin glued to the back door and another doorway put in. Anyway, you have to vacate your house for 4 months whilst the work is done, as they've been moving people the elderly have been given options to move into more appropriate accommodation, decorated, carpeted and with the H/A paying the removal firm. It really does encourage the rotation of housing stock.

Just a bit of a tip for you guys but when you see a yummy-mummy, couple of Heinz-57 kids clinging onto her and no daddy in sight, give her £20. Saves her waiting 'til next benefits day and you'll feel good about yourself :) You don't need it as much as she does and she's earned it, getting knocked up by some ethinic minorities and that.
