  1. 1. Are you a vegetarian?

    • Yes, meat is murder
    • No, I love meat me
    • I should consider it really
    • I have no intention of ever entertaining the idea

@AnnaPippus

Many people don't eat veal because they don't think it's right to eat babies.

Age at which other animals are killed:

- meat chickens: 5 to 6 weeks (still peeping at slaughter)

- pigs: 5 to 6 months

- beef cattle: 12 to 18 months

- turkeys: 3 to 6 months

They are all babies.

I must admit, I don't understand how people rationalise the idea that killing a cow is okay if it's a couple of years old, but killing it at six months old is something grotesque.

It's a weird one, because people have no issue with lamb or hoggett.

I used to rationalise it too, swallowing the propaganda about humane slaughter, they lived a decent life etc. Then I watched videos of factory farms every day for a month.

I am now consumed with guilt and shame for all the suffering of which I was part. I just hope there's no afterlife because it won't have mercy on us for what we do to these innocent creatures.

Group self-preservation around the idea and you can justify anything - add taste and experience to that and it's a solid belief.

Treatment of the animal probably, regardless of your view in general, some traditional veal-farming methods are seen as unusually cruel and the association has stuck. Similar to foie gras.

Lamb is traditionally reared in the field and avoids the same association, although price is also a key factor in terms of what's considered normal to an average consumer.

Vegetarians lack the logic for that kind of thinking.

I Disagree. It's about choice. The world has a habit of moving slowly, but eventually completely transforming. When sales of animal foods drop, the industry naturally shrinks, just like any other business in a Capitalist world. Supply and demand is inexorably linked.

First and foremost though, choice and free will are the bedrocks of our culture, as well as accepting or not accepting the results of our own actions.

I'm struggling with meat at the moment and moving to eating more fish/molluscs and veg dishes. Not quite ready to ditch it yet though.

Get a Vitamin B complex pill if you're reducing meat intake. We have no right to torture these innocent creatures. Absolutely no right.

Cheers mate. Not trying to trap you in anything but do you eat any creatures? Mussels, prawns, fish etc or is it all a no no for you?

I do have a bit of dairy as biscuits and chocolate without it are prohibitively expensive. Plan to give that up when the vegan stuff gets cheaper. Occasional eggs gifted by friends' chickens, not the horrific factory stuff. You lose the taste after a while as your mind starts associating it with cruelty.

The footprint of suffering the average person leaves behind them when they leave this planet must be horrendous.

A good purpose in life is to reduce your footprint of destruction, pain and suffering.

Carpe diem.

And so endeth the lesson.

Every day for a month? Why? How did you become such a fun guy?

The Mrs and I have given ourselves about 12 months to 2 years to adapt to going Vegan.

We've been lacto-ovo vegetarian for about a year - like you, basically adding the odd egg or some dairy, as supplements.

Also, like you, I have watched many documentaries on factory farming, and there's a lot to get through. I do it regularly. It is sensitising me. I am more aware than ever before, and it needs to be that way. I'm sick to my stomach; I'm filled with remorse; We've been lied to about what goes on and that it needs to go on. It doesn't.

75% of all antibiotics manufactured are used in factory farming, to reduce disease. Now the WHO is saying that we could be developing antibiotic resistance because we ingest the animals that have been treated. It's a nightmare in the making.

And for those that say we need saturated fat in our diets, I say, eat your avocados. They are roughly 7% saturated fat.

Can anyone recommend any particular brand/type of tempeh to try. Thought I’d give it a go as a meat alternative.

I recommend buying it ready cooked as part of a meal from Moksi in Leiden. They know how to use it whereas it's always been disappointing when I've tried to cook it myself. For tofu, flash fry it beforehand to take the moisture out then marinade it before cooking it again. This does not work for me with tempeh though. If anyone knows how to use it properly I'd love to know.
