Well, it's basic anthropology, but you can call it what you like. Just as you refer to a baby that is at least three-fourths white as black.

So what your saying is that it’s only a 25% chance of a it being a victim of racism and 75% of being a racist like good old Great Grandad?

To paraphrase - that an act, because it falls in line with what racists do, should not automatically be considered as the same. Motivations need to be taken into account.

It's the same principle for antisemitism, and all other forms of racism.

For reference, I agree that in the overwhelming amount of occasions, linking anyone of African heritage to an ape is racist. I just don't agree with the blanket statement, as it leaves no room for nuance or basic human fallibility.

Looks like he's done something completely tone deaf (at best), arrogantly assumed he can just brush it off and found out he can't.  Fair enough.

Can't help but find the tone of the uproar a touch puritanical though.  I think it must be the usual "privilege" rhetoric being used in the sense of a member of the royal family having less than a third-tier radio personality...

If him referring to the royal family as monkeys genuinely is a running gag of his, then I don't see how anyone can claim it to be racist.  However, like 90% of the people weighing in, I haven't a fucking clue about his work this century so can't really speak to it.

Isn't Baker being sacked for his lack of judgement? The BBC cannot be certain that this was an honest mistake so I can understand why they did what they did. Whatever reason Baker gives, he failed to see how inappropriate the image was.

And isn't it a positive that lots of people were offended? Suggests to me that today more people have a better awareness of what might offend others.

Does that make me a snowflake?

I think we’re all missing the point that, irrespective of the motivations or reasoning behind the chimpanzee tweet, he should have been sacked for coughing that he has red sauce on a sausage sandwich....

But, if at the point of comparison, the person's race is unknown, then it is hard to define the act as one centring on race. I could call you an ape - I'm unaware of your race - is that immediately racist, or does it become retrospectively racist if you then tell me you're black?

With regards to Baker, he’s made many a comment about monkeys and the royals. A bit of foresight would have benefitted, and he did apologise and take it down straight away. For the BBC to sack him and let Sugar keep his job despite being a massive racist himself and giving Farage the amount of air time they do, seems a bit fucking rich.

Ex-fucking-scuse me. I’ve got feelings too you know.
