I wouldn’t have him back but it’s not because of some Pollyanna idea of football or the club. It’s because he doesn’t fit our side in the role he’s best at. He’s a better version of Shaqiri honestly. We all watched him over two legs playing for the club he supposedly adores and even at home he wasn’t that man that could be counted on. Away to us he was fucked after Origi scored. Fantastic little player but he doesn’t fit our sides tenacity.

I don’t remember Xabi downing tools.  Rafa tried to fuck him off the season before for Gareth Barry which people love to put down to the mythical shit two years he had.  Madrid can’t un for him and he asked to leave and the club let him go.  It would have been interesting to see what would have happened had the club tried to force him to stay but we didn’t so don’t make shit up.

He handed in a transfer request to force the issue.

Said all season I'd have him back fir the right money if the players and coaches wanted him. Just feel now the value won't be there. Gaurentee they'll want 90ml off us compared to 70ml from someone else after yesterday. Though he is proven over here a Havertz, Fekir, Pepe, Brandt would all probably offer more and lower wages and fee. But if Klopp wanted him and the players happy to have him back I wouldn't moan

A perfectly reasonable thing to do.  He didn’t down tools did he.

Its not reasonable and Rafa had every right tp look at other players. Clear at the end he wanted Alonso to stay.

It was Mascherano that refused to play, my memory so apologies

Not having this shit Alonso was forced out. He was moaning about the new tax laws a year before saying how it would force foreign players out. He saw our form slip, didn't like the tax and used the Barry crap as a reason to go.

Don't blame him, we weren't winning shit and he got a move to Madrid

It is reasonable if you want to leave.  Being unreasonable is when the club refuses it and you don’t honour your contract by refusing to train/play etc.  Of course Rafa has every right to look at other players just as much as Xabi had the right to put a transfer request in.  It wasn’t exactly a bad decision either.  Mascherano is in the cunt books the same as Suarez and Coutinho.  I don’t think Xabi would have pulled the same shit as them but he was never put in the position to have to.

Who’s saying he was forced out?  He handed a transfer request in.  He didn’t see our form slip either.  We finished second in the league when he left.

Personally I think he got sick of Benitez and could see the direction the club was going in with the con men that owned us.  The Barry crap was embarrassing from Benitez with the rumours being he fell out with Alonso over him wanting to be at the birth of his child instead of at a match.

Handing in a transfer request is probably the most honourable thing a footballer can do if he wants to leave. At least they are being honest about it.

Most footballers these days do everything to avoid handing the request in because if they do then they lose their loyalty bonus, and God forbid that a footballer doesn't make that extra couple of hundred grand, so they resort to faking injuries and whatnot to force the move.

So I've got no beef with Alonso for actually doing it properly.

Never understood the fans reaction to Barry. Villa finished 6th consistently at that time and him and Milner were by far their standout players. Barry would've been an excellent signing for us, and would've gone some way towards filling the hole that Alonso left. However the fans turned their noses up and we ended up with a succession of pure shite like Aquilani, Poulson and Spearing that received non of the vitriol, yet all of them combined weren't fit to lace Barry's boots. Embarrassing episode from the fans that was.

Barry was ordinary and only a bit better than the players you mentioned. He would have been a shit signing but still not as bad as Aqualani or Poulsen I suppose. After the likes of Alonso you will always have a big gap to fill and none of these players would even come close to replacing him.

The issue with him was that Rafa was publicly as possible courting him as a new option/replacement to Alonso the year before he left. He didn’t want Xabi anymore.

Barry not signing wasn’t because of the fans either, so not sure where you’re getting that from. He was unhappy about Rafa’s plans for him as he wanted to play centre mid, but was being sold the role of utility man.

What a load of complete bollocks.

The fans reaction to Barry was because Rafa wanted to bring him in to replace Alonso with Alonso being linked to Juventus for less money. The fans knew how good Alonso was and obviously felt Rafa was doing something which was going to damage the team for whatever reason he was doing it for it clearly wasn’t football reasons.  It wasn’t the fans that stopped the transfer either it was Aston Villa as they wanted 18m but we wouldn’t go above 15m.

Alonso then had a sensational year.  Barry went to City pretty much as the season ended and Alonso didn’t hand a transfer request in until about 2 months after that and transferred in August..  The fans had fuck impact on us not signing Barry.

You say that as if supporters chose Aquilani, Poulsen and Spearing ahead of Barry, but that wasn't the case. The fans chose Alonso over Barry, which is fucking right. One of the finest midfielders Europe has seen vs a journeyman. No contest.

In fairness, most of us would have taken him over Aquilani, Poulsen or Spearing.

It was Rafa's blind spot (thankfully one of only a few) that he could be an Alonso replacement that people took issue with.

Alonso wanted to leave for Juventus, Arsenal and then Madrid. Alonso had no loyalty to us whatsoever and yet the fans fell over backwards for him. They didn't want to attack Alonso for trying to push though a move to Arsenal, or Benitez because he was performing miracles for us, so they centred all their anger on Gareth Barry. The fans were singing songs at games about him.

Barry went on to win two titles at City and was an important cog in that side. Aqualani arrived and the fans were giving it the whole "little prince", "class him la" and he was fucking shite from the moment he arrived and was a crock to boot. Barry was miles better and was still a solid player in his 30's at Everton. We would've been far better off getting shot of Alonso and bringing in Barry in 2008, than what transpired in 2009. The fans were a disgrace.

Lay off the crack mate.

Benitez wanted him out and was whoring him around.  As soon as he wanted to leave he handed a transfer request in.  He didn’t do that for Arsenal or Juventus.  You’re talking out of your arse.

I don’t know where you’re coming up with this straw man argument.  Barry was a better player than Aquilani but that wasn’t the point.  The fans didn’t want Alonso replacing with Barry but again the fans had no say in any of it.  It didn’t happen because nobody met the valuation for Alonso and we didn’t for Barry.  I don’t know if you noticed either but City were bought out by a country and spent billions.  Barry was hardly the reason City won any trophies and if you think he would have impacted the trajectory of the club had we replaced Alonso with him in 2008 you’re even more thick than I previously thought.

Darren Fletcher and Nicky Butt also have a few titles between them, still wouldn't want them ahead of Alonso in his prime.
