It came through loud and clear on the television, there were hundreds if not thousands singing.

This thing about using Liverpool fans singing Munich chants or whatever as a caveat is absolute bollocks. I've only ever heard a few scaly twats singing it in pubs and maybe a dozen or so pissed up lads at their ground a couple of times, which has been widely met with our own fans either giving them a clip around the ear or a telling off. It's absolutely no excuse for the entire away end to be bouncing with "the sun was right, you're murderers" and it doesn't make their actions any less heinous.

I'm glad it is being reported, albeit not quite accurately. It's still progress.

Next step the club has to make a complaint. That will make it official. You would expect Man Utd to go tit for tat and condemn Munich chants. Even if that stuff has largely gone now, we can agree, together, to root it out, even if at present it is probably 90/10.

It has no place in the game.

I think English media will be reluctant to chase this controversy because it was part of a UEFA competition and the power for retrospective action is held by UEFA. Do the tabloids want to promote the idea their nation's fans are somehow behaving worse on the European stage? Unlikely. They'll mention it, but not push for non-English governing bodies to take action. That right is reserved for themselves and the glorious FA.

Every report Ive seen are saying yeah, united fans were chanting but Liverpool fans made aeroplane gestures and sang the runway song.

This is fucking criminal. Last time I was at a united game at Anfield and some dick started doing the aeroplane, they were escorted out by the Police. I havent heard a single voice chanting 'munich' or singing the runway song in years yet all the reports go on about this as if it happened last night.

Even some knob on r*d c*fe said it happened last night. They're not only fucking vile but they're fucking liars and in denial.

And if UEFA can sanction celtic and rangers over sectarian songs, they should hammer united over their filth.

A fucking men.

Just had a look at that red cafe link and they are absolutely fucking deluded if they think Liverpool fans en mass sing Munich sings.

I've been to their ground for probably the last 5 or 6 years and I would say 70% of their home support are at it as well. With the odd dickhead from our side giving it the aeroplane gestures.

I can't remember what year it was when they were actually singing 'where's your famous Munich song!'

They'll be itching for our fans to be singing it in the return leg. Any singing or gestures from our part will be on youtube within seconds.

I don't even know the runway song.

I got a bus back from dublin after one of our games and then a taxi from bus drop. I was talking to the taxi driver about the match and he was a liverpool fan too. he started banging on about how much he hated united who he referred to as runway. I hadnt a clue what he was on about. Sufficed to say the guy was a complete fucking imbecile.

On a positive note this is the beginning of the end of that shite at these games.

Great point.

Could a complaint be made to UEFA I wonder?

Manchester United condemn fans for Hillsborough chants but Merseyside police say they have received no complaints
  • Manchester United fans were heard chanting about disaster during game
  • Club says chants 'have no place in the game and do not reflect the values the club holds'
  • Chants from away end also reported to have focused on Heysel disaster
  • Merseyside Police say they will take action if there are any complaints

Manchester United have condemned the supporters who chanted about the Hillsborough disaster during Thursday's Europa League clash with Liverpool.

The first European meeting of the north-west giants was an intense occasion, with Jurgen Klopp's men triumphing 2-0 at Anfield in the first leg of the last-16 tie.

However, unsavoury chants emanated from the away end throughout the match, with sections of the travelling support heard singing about the Hillsborough disaster on several occasions.

Mancheter United fans at Anfield have been accused of chanting about Hillsborough, although there is no suggestion that any of those in this picture were involved

A crush during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, which saw 96 people killed, was the subject of chants referencing media coverage at the time.

A statement from Manchester United in the wake of Thursday's events read: 'It has always been the position of Manchester United that chants of this nature, which refer to historical tragedies, have no place in the game and do not reflect the values the club holds.

'We are in discussion with our fans' groups to seek their support in preventing this type of behaviour in the future.'

Chants from the away end were also reported to have focused on the Heysel disaster, when 39 fans died before the 1985 European Cup final between Juventus and Liverpool.

This is not the first time that vile chants have been heard during this fixture, with some Liverpool supporters having previously sung about the Munich air disaster that claimed 23 lives as United flew back from a European fixture in 1958.

Merseyside Police have yet to receive any complaints about Thursday's incident, but Match Commander Chief Superintendent Jon Ward has pledged to take action if that changes.

'We have received no complaints relating to chanting by supporters at (Thursday) night's match but are aware of media coverage,' Chief Supt Ward said.

'Merseyside Police take all reports seriously and where offences are identified, we would investigate such complaints thoroughly

'The vast majority of fans behaved impeccably and enjoyed the occasion for what it was - a highly competitive football match between two passionate clubs and their supporters.

'A great deal of work went into planning for the match involving the clubs, the police and most importantly the fans.

'The safety of all fans attending Anfield on match day will always be our absolute priority but we can only achieve this through the professionalism of the people who work at the event and through the co-operation of the fans themselves.'

Thursday's chants were described as 'disgusting' by ex-United striker Dion Dublin, while former Liverpool midfielder Ray Houghton said it was 'dreadful'.

'There were people in the crowd who lost loved ones at Hillsborough and that's really hard to take,' the former Republic of Ireland midfielder told BBC Radio 5 live.

'It's something we don't want to hear. It's happened in the past with Liverpool fans to Manchester United with what happened at Munich. It's uncalled for.'

Houghton added: 'When you lower yourself to that level (of those fans), it's quite remarkable.

'It should have been a night of celebration - they haven't played each other in a European tie before. The fans should have been getting behind their own team.

'When you stoop as low as they did (on Thursday) night, for me, it's dreadful.'

UEFA had no updates on potential action regarding the incident when contacted on Friday.

The second leg of the Europa League last-16 tie between United and Liverpool takes place at Old Trafford on March 17.

I like the way any manc act of contrition always includes a proviso. 'But, but'.

Just fuck off, would rather they said nothing at all. They're scum and are universally regarded as such, that's why they always get their heads kicked in abroad.

I see Dortmund, Ajax and Milan were singing manc songs again last weekend. Oh no wait, that was us.

Redcafe is full of fiction and damage limitation.

Including, loads of United posters who now suddenly work with Liverpool season ticket holder's who have, today, conveniently confirmed how disgusted they were by the amount of aeroplane gestures and Munich songs coming from our fans.

Yeah. Of course.

Turn it in, you bad fucking eejits.

uefa plaster them ads over the tv say no to racism with Bale Ronaldo etc and good enough, you shouldn't have fans abuse you because of a different colour of skin, but parents like the hicks do not need to listen to abuse after losing to teenage girls at Hillsborough. If the fa and uefa do not act it makes the whole kick racism out of football policy with all their big super de dupa stars a load of worthless empty gesture bullshit.
