Raspberry pi

£62! Hmm was either this or getting Apple TV and jailbreaking it. Decisions decisions!

£62 seems quite pricey just for coming preloaded with XBMC. It really is a simple process to install it yourself. My Pi with a case cost about £35. I already had a spare SD card and used a spare blackberry charger for the power supply. You just download a free piece of software to your pc, connect the SD card, and the software installs XBMC to the SD card for you.

Bear in mind that, as far as I am aware, there is no jailbreak for ATV 3 and the ATV 2 are inflated prices on eBay due to the fact they can be jail broken.

I just got one the other week. No idea what to do with it, like.

Raspberry Pi 2? Stick this on it

https://osmc.tv

Then stick a load of addons on it to stream tv/movies/sport/porn.

If you have a hard drive full of downloaded stuff just plug it in and it will play them. It's a fantastic device. Better for Kodi/XBMC than the Android boxes.

It's not a one-size fits all solution though is it.

You can't record things, and that's a massive part of the way in which I digest football games, I've got kids and so I don't often get the chance, or feel the need, to watch the weekend matches at the time they are being played. So I'll record them and watch them when the kids have gone to bed. Pi can't do that.

One question though, is the Pi future-proof? Can you offer some sort of guarantee that this loophole, and it IS a loophole, won't be closed in the near future? What happens when the people who post the ace content are caught and prosecuted? It's not a given that someone will fill the gap.

Am I talking rubbish here?

NBC Sports Extra had all the games available on catchup in HD for free last season but it isn't working now. You probably can record streams to playback later but it's not something I have set up myself.

Streaming is NOT illegal, downloading is a grey area, providing copyrighted material probably is. This depends on the country of course.

In the unlikely event that Kodi is banned worldwide and people actually obeyed it then the worst that would happen is you would have a tiny quadcore computer capable of loads of stuff including running Ubuntu and Windows 10 for 40 quid.

I just need a unicorn hat for mine.

So I ordered one of these on a whim the other day and just realised I need power supply. (I though you just plugged in to a powered USB).

Is there anything else I need to buy? Thinking of trying to get kodi working and connecting to an external HD for media. Thanks.

Power supply, box, micro SD card, HDMI cable and an Ethernet cable (unless you are using WiFi).

You could also power it from a USB port on your TV if it supplies enough (some do, some don't) but I haven't tried that myself. You can get an official power supply for 2 or 3 quid though.

Kodi is easy enough to put on the SD card. The best two distributions are probably OSMC (that's what I'm using) or OpenElec. OpenElec is more cut down and supposedly faster for it but I see no difference in speed myself on the Pi 2. It should make less difference on the 3. Both are good.

OSMC is available here

Excellent. It seems you need a keyboard and mouse too. Do the have to be permanently connected? That would be a bit of a pain but not the end of the world. I guess I could use Bluetooth one I suppose.

You don't need a keyboard and mouse at all but it can be useful for initial set up (putting the wifi code in).

Your TV remote control will probably work with it via CEC (simplink or whatever name your particular brand is using) and there are loads of remote apps to turn your smartphone or tablet into a remote. Yatse is the best one (Android only though) and has a free version.

even better.

I've got a harmony remote so would guess that will connect to it easy enough. I'll get the other stuff and try and get it working. Cheers.

I've installed OSMC and seems to be working ok, has connected to my hard drives fine.

I can't get it to work with my Harmony Ultimate no matter what I do so using a wireless mouse at the moment to do everything.

Addons - could someone PM some recommended ones please. I added one but didn't seem to work. Thanks.

I should have added, I have it connected to my home cinema set up, so multiple HDMI connections to the amp and then one into the TVs etc.

My remote has a hub, IR blasters, is permanently connected to the Internet so if not working does seem to suggest configuration rather than functionality.

The Pi doesn't have an IR receiver so you'd probably have to add one or set it up as something different via CEC. Your normal TV remote probably will work but defeats the point of a unified remote. I haven't set one up with a Pi myself.

Exodus is probably the best addon at the moment for TV and film. Good alternatives are SALTS and iStream.

This is good for seeing which is best for footy at the moment

Phoenix is good for various stuff. FTV is good for freeview channels and works abroad.

Stick Videodevil on if you are a wanker.

I've got and iOS controller which works fine so I'll stick with that for now.

I've added Genesis, Icestreams, Phoenix and a few others. I've managed to get them to the stage I can see the content but when I try and stream I get a sad face and it goes back to the menu.

I'm reasonably techy but this is making me want to string myself up!

Genesis isn't being developed any more. Exodus is the new version of it by the same developer.

If you have something called Israelive get rid of it. It broke loads of setups last week.

You might also be having issues if you have a BT Hub (and I think Sky also) in that you need to enable something in the hub settings.
