Liverpool youngster Suso fined by FA for Enrique Twitter comment

Liverpool teenager Suso has been fined £10,000 by the Football Association for a comment posted on Twitter.

The tweet in question was a picture of Reds left-back Jose Enrique getting his teeth whitened with Suso swearing and calling his team-mate "gay".

The 19-year-old later deleted the remark but has been fined and warned about his future conduct.

Suso has broken into the Liverpool first team this season, making 13 appearances so far in the campaign.

The FA's statement read: "The charge, which the player admitted and requested a paper hearing, was that he acted in a way which was improper and/or brought the game into disrepute in that the comment was posted on his Twitter account and included a reference to a person's sexual orientation and/or disability."

I think the FA have finally realised what a cash cow the social media network can be. Got to pay for Wembley somehow.

They probably have some knob trawling Twitter looking for something that could "bring the game into disrepute". Of the 100's of tweets made by people in the professional game every week, they are bound to find something. Hell, Ashley Cole and Rio Ferdinand could be worth millions during a season!

Also, do the FA not need a complaint from an "injured" party any more to act as judge, jury and executioner any more?

Although unlikely and without any knowledge of Enrique's sexuality, I would love it if he told the FA that he actually was gay.

Actually, thinking about this a bit more, are they actually calling Enrique a homosexual with their verdict?

What gives them the right to hand out fines for what players say on Twitter?

I would imagine it comes within the rules and regulations that they and the clubs agree to adhere to.

Interesting angle. Don't know, but I wish a footballer would one day lawyer up and get a legal perspective on these lot.

It would be interesting, I suspect the FA might be in a bit of difficulty, effectively a professional body trying to censor the views of private individuals. I haven't seen any other professional body eg. the british medical association etc assume it has the right to censor the views of it's membership.

Fair enough but I'm interested in what Gordon Taylor, Lord Ousley, Clarke Carlisle, Dave Whelan, Patrick Barclay and other prominent LFC commentators have to say on the matter. It would be remiss to let a bandwagon roll by without jumping on. Lets hope the PPJ, PFJ and the Society of Gay Black Andalucian Lawyers get in involved and demand we receive a 3,000 point league deduction.

Seems so, but it would be interesting to see if this would hold up in an actual court. Surely no one would take offense to such banter, and if they did it would be kind of ridiculous. Add that to the fact that he removed the tweet after only a few minutes.

The fine is quite harsh as well for such an innocent remark, a warning would be enough. Not that he'd be too bothered about it, but it's the labeling thing again like it was with Suarez.
