Sadio had a great season but he was usually little more than an afterthought because of the incredible exploits of his two fellow frontmen. 12 months ago Mané was our player of the season (despite some weirdos thinking it was Coutinho) but this year he was even better. He scored 20 goals and was involved in a load more. Yet in terms of our player of the year he wouldn’t even be top five. That shows the progress of the team. Sadio got better this year yet this time he was far from being our main man, so that's a good thing. He’s a strange player is Mané. A video showing his best bits would make him look like a superstar. Yet you could make a compil…

It was a season of two halves for the Belgian. Having ended the previous campaign in really good form (along with Emre Can he was arguably our best player in the second half of the 16/17 season) he’d earned the right to start this one as first choice. It always felt like his grasp on the position was fairly tenuous though, and that one bad game would see him replaced by Loris Karius. I mean, he was ‘rested’ for a league game with Arsenal in August. That was just weird. He played in the CL qualifiers against Hoffenheim (and made a crucial penalty save in the away leg), but was then randomly left out against Arsenal. I didn’t get that at all. Klopp m…

What a season he had. He just got better and better and by the end of it he looked like a nailed on future Anfield legend. The pre-season injury to Nathaniel Clyne was a big blow but it was great news for Trent as it gave him far more game time than he might otherwise have had. He started the season well and scored his first goal in the CL qualifier against Hoffenheim, but for much of the season he was splitting playing time with Joe Gomez. Gomez eventually edged ahead and was playing the majority of games until an injury sustained on international duty in March sidelined him and left Trent as the only fit right back in the squad at the business …

If we’d got this deal done last summer and not had to wait until January, we’d almost certainly have finished second. Having to wait until the winter window was frustrating and we’ll never know exactly what went wrong in the summer. We can only hope that lessons were learned and it won’t happen again. We didn’t really get to fully enjoy the signing because no sooner had Virgil taped through the door, Coutinho was desperately trying to sneak out of it. That put a cloud over the entire window, but looking back on it, if we had kept Coutinho and not signed Van Dijk would we have had the exciting second half to the season we had? Unlikely. I read somew…

Going into the season the likeable Dutchman seemed to be one of those most under threat by the arrivals of Fabinho and Naby Keita, yet he was our best midfielder in the opening months. By some distance. His start to the season was fantastic. He had a little dip in the middle (actually 'dip' might be overstating it to be fair) but he came back strong again and he was almost superhuman in that Barcelona game. He’s such a clever, versatile footballer. He's been brilliant whenever he has had to play as a number six and this time last year that was a position I thought he might settle down into. Then we bought Fabinho, and the impact made by the Brazil…

Liverpool announce three-match summer tour of United States Liverpool will play three friendlies in the United States as part of their preseason preparations for the 2018-19 campaign, the club announced on Tuesday. The Premier League leaders will stage matches from July 19-24 in three of the United States' most iconic stadiums. The tour of the U.S. will begin on July 19, when the Reds will take on Borussia Dortmund at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana. They will then face Sevilla at Boston's Fenway Park on July 21 before wrapping up against Portuguese side Sporting at Yankee Stadium in New York three days later. "Preseason …

This guy has completely changed how I look at goalkeepers. Previously I always judged keepers on the great saves they make. With Alisson it’s about the great saves he doesn’t have to make. You don’t see him flying around making saves at full stretch because he rarely needs to. He can do it when necessary and we’ve seen him make big stops at important moments. Mostly though he’s just making routine saves and making it look simple because his fundamentals are so sound. That’s what makes him so great and separates him from the likes of Hugo Lloris and David De Gea. Those two make far more spectacular looking saves than Alisson does but they also mak…

The role of back up keeper is an incredibly tough spot to fill. If you have a quality young keeper you don’t want him sitting on the bench, but goalkeepers who are good enough to play and are still at a good age don’t want to be back ups. So generally you either end up with an old fella at the end of his career or just someone who isn’t really good enough to start for most top flight clubs. As far as back ups go, it looked for a while like we’d struck gold with Adrian. He was thrown in at the deep end when Alisson was injured on opening day and to his great credit he held down the fort until the Brazilian was ready to return. The loss o…

I like Ox but I don’t ever see him becoming a regular starter. As a midfielder he’s a really useful player to have. As a winger he’s a bit pointless. His strength is breaking from midfield and getting shots in. He’s very good at that and in the limited opportunities he’s had there he’s delivered. He had a little run early in the season when he bagged a few goals but after that he was in and out. It was actually quite surprising to me when I saw how many appearances he made as I don't think of him as a regular. He made 43 appearances though. That's a hell of a lot for someone who is not first choice. I don't think we'll ever see him make th…

My favourite current player and he’s well on the way to becoming my all time favourite (overtaking my childhood hero Paul Walsh). I absolutely love this lad. I love everything about him. He’s the heart and soul of this team and represents everything good that we see on and off the pitch. You can count his bad games on one hand as he’s relentlessly consistent and the ground he covers up and down that left flank is almost like having an extra man on the pitch. One minute he's in his own box defending, the next he's at the byline whipping in crosses. If there's one moment this season that personifies Robbo it's the fifth goal against Chelsea. It came…

Apart from the Anfield derby did he actually do anything this season? We’ll always love him for what he did last year but this time around has been something of a damp squib from Divock Origi. Granted, it’s not easy to show your best form when you don’t play regularly and given the quality of the three ahead of him it’s difficult to be anything more than a back up, but Divock didn’t really do anywhere near enough to justify being selected more often. He actually started the season the way he left off last time out though, with a goal and a good performance against Norwich. Then, inexplicably, soon after that he got his hair cut and th…

Going into the season I had a sneaky feeling Fabinho would be our Player of the Year. If you look at the previous year from the time that he eventually established himself in the side, you could make a case that he was as good as anyone in the second part of the season. If he hadn’t gotten injured this year maybe my sneaky feeling would have been right. He began the season in brilliant form but then he damaged ankle ligaments in November. The timing of that couldn’t have been worse as he was flying. He’d just scored his first goal for the club with a howitzer in the win over City at Anfield but two games later he damaged ankle ligaments against Napoli. …

I don’t think there’s anyone else at the club who has to sacrifice themselves in the way Wijnaldum does. He could easily score 15 goals a season and be seen as one of the most deadly midfielders in Europe if he wanted to (just look at how he plays for Holland), but instead he does the dirty jobs that help others shine and much of the work he does goes unnoticed. Occasionally there’ll be a game when it looks like he’s been let off the leash and he’ll cause absolute havoc for the opposition, and you think ‘why doesn’t he do that all the time?’. Now I’ve come to realise that he doesn’t do it all the time because that’s not what Klopp wants from him. Ofte…

Another solid season from the vice captain. He’d probably like to have played a bit more but whenever he plays he delivers. Balls of steel when it comes to penalties too. This is one of the more difficult ones to do for a couple of reasons. Firstly, he's so understated and reliable that there aren't many things that stand out either good or bad, and secondly my memory is shit these days that even if there were I probably wouldn't remember. You just know what you're going to get from him. He isn't flash but he just seems to do the right thing all the time. There are no fluctuations in form with Milner, he's just relentlessly reliable an…

The only thing that seems to ever hold Joe Gomez back is injuries. When he’s fit he’s usually Klopp’s first choice to partner Virgil and our record with those two at the heart of the defence is terrific. On paper it’s our best pairing, but Joe has seemed to pick up at least one significant injury every year. This season was the exception. He began the season in the starting line up but within a couple of games he'd been benched for Joel Matip. He wasn't playing badly but he wasn't at his absolute best either, and Matip is so good that the only way Gomez is keeping him out is if he's on the absolute top of his game. Perhaps Joe was still trying to sha…

This fella is really, really good. He might be the most under-rated defender in the Premier League. I feel as though nobody outside of our fanbase knows how good he is. Because he is good. Really, really good. Unfortunately he’s also really, really brittle. If he could stay fit then Klopp would have a really difficult time choosing between Matip and Gomez. They’re very different players but either of them can play with Virgil and form the best pairing in the league. Matip was great in the run in last year and he’s been great when he’s played this season. When was the last bad game he had? I honestly can’t remember. He’s solid and dependabl…

What a season from the skipper. He’s my Player of the Year although I admit that sentiment has contributed to that. Realistically I can’t tell you he’s been significantly better than Van Dijk or Mané (if you want to throw Trent and Robbo in there too that’s fine), but context is king and given where he has come from and the way he’s had to win over his doubters I’d say that his overall achievement is greater, especially as his impact on those around him is matched only by Van Dijk. Lifting the European Cup last season helped him massively. It removed a lot of the doubts people had over him as a captain and it gave him a little swagger. You can see…

This was really difficult and it’s going to seem like I’m not a big Salah fan, which is not the case as I love Mo. I just don’t quite know what to make of him anymore. If you look at the numbers alone then Salah is easily a 9 out of 10. If you base it on the eye test alone then it’s probably no more than a 7. He's an undisputedly great player who occasionally really doesn't look like one, if that makes sense? He’s such a strange one because he gives the ball away cheaply an awful lot and he misses far more than he scores, yet he’s always right up there in the race for the Golden Boot and his 'goal involvement' numbers are impressive too. …

Opinions on Keita vary wildly and he’s probably the most divisive player in the squad. Part of the problem is that he always looks much better on the stat sheet than he does on the eyes. I’ll come out of Anfield thinking “Naby had a decent game today” and then I’ll see some stat nerd on Twitter declaring it’s the best game any midfielder has had in the last three years, and I’ll be scratching my head thinking “really?”. He’s nowhere near as good as his army of fans claim he is, but he’s nowhere near as bad as his army of critics say either. He’s impossible to judge properly because he never has an extended run in the side. I expected him to…

Is this too low a grade? It feels a little bit harsh but I don’t actually think I could have justified going any higher based on the ratings I've given him the past couple of years and how his form in those years compared to this one. The team has had an incredible season and all of the regular starters are responsible for that, including Bobby. It doesn’t mean they’ve all shone individually though and Firmino is a good example of that. He might actually be the best example in fact. He played his part but he can play it better. There is no doubting the importance of Firmino to this team. He’s the glue that holds everything together at the top end …

The only one of the front three who has gotten steadily better year on year. Sadio has been on an upward curve since he arrived, whereas Salah and Firmino have been more up and down. He’s as good as any forward in Europe and has developed into the complete footballer. Right foot goals, left foot goals, great in the air, smart, quick, skilful, strong, tenacious, graceful, athletic, Sadio has it all. The one thing he lacked initially was consistency (as great as he was in his first couple of years, he would have quiet spells in a season) but that’s there now. He’s had a great season. He rarely has a bad game and you can make a strong ca…

Simply terrific. He’s had another great season and he’s a joy to watch. Trent just makes it look so easy and effortless. He and Robbo are polar opposites in style but they both get the job done in their own unique way. It’s sometimes easy to forget that Trent is still a kid as he’s achieved so much already. In terms of achievements and appearances it’s not inconceivable to think that Trent may eventually go on to surpass Stevie Gerrard. Look at what he’s done already at just 21 years of age. World, European and English Champion, Young Player of the Year, two appearances in Champions League finals, his own weekly highlight reel on Match of the Day (maybe not week…

He’s just imperious. He’s so good that the only weakness he has is that things are so easy for him that occasionally he’ll get a little bit sloppy. It’s almost taken for granted now how good he is. I mean, last year he won Player of the Year and was up for the Balon d’Or. This year he’s not getting the same kind of recognition, yet his form hasn’t dropped off. We've just gotten used to him being great. He’s been brilliant. He never misses games, he never loses out in any duels whether it’s aerially or on the ground, he scores goals, he pings 40 yard passes around like Xabi Alonso, basically he does it all. Yet no-one is really talking about him fo…
