Ronaldo comes out on top in trial of talent with Messi by Phil Minshull 1 hour, 12 minutes ago BARCELONA, Spain (AFP) - It didn't quite turn into the mesmerising display of skills between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi that everyone had anticipated but pundits gave the verdict to the United player. "It was an impressive performance from him," commented Portugal coach Luis Felipe Scolari, who was at the game checking on Ronaldo's progress ahead of the forthcoming Euro 2008 finals. Ronaldo missed an early penalty that would have broken the deadlock between United and hosts Barcelona in their Champions League semi-final, first leg 0-0 draw but otherwise he w…

My mate just told me that he heard what the bluenose gobshite said to him, it went like this Materazzi pinches Zidane's nipple, so Zidane obviously took exception. Materazzi says that Zidane should cool it, then Zidane walks away laughing (although the lip reader on the news couldnt see as ZZ was facing away), and then Materazzi said "I hope you and your family all die a horrible death" so then we all know what happened next. Not that bad you reckon? Well, Zidane only found out minutes before the game that his mother was on her death bed- hence the reason he left seperately from the France squad afterwards, to be with her. Apparently thats what was said, although it…

Before the season Rafa thought he had £20m to spend + founds recieved from player sales such as Alonso and Arbeloa. He had lined up D.Silva, Jovetic, Turner/Upson and G.Barry. Then the owners says no and tell him that he now has to to spend the transfer kitty on renewing player contracts. He's got about £14m left and now has to look at different targets. He's now almost forced to look at players who plays for clubs that already owes Liverpool money. (Pompey £8m crouch and Roma for Riise). We end up signing Aquilani for £5m + future installments, Johnson for around £8m and Soto for a bit more than £1m. Looking back on it now, this season was almost d…

What must the new manager achieve in the first season?

For the past 2 seasons, we play 1)mostly defensive football with mostly long balls masqueraded as great passes 2)the players are like strangers to each other. Either square passes to each other, a hopeless punt forward or a poor cross with 1 striker to battle against several defenders 3)we were out of the race for the championship by December last season and early November this season We need 1)one fast, skilful and commanding central defender--trouble is, every club in Europe is looking for one too 2)an excellent to world-class right sided midfielder 3)a partner to Steven Gerrard 4)clear out stacks of deadwood, to bring in new players, and to reduce the wa…

A great squad is being built up by Rafa – however there are players in the team now that are probably not of the highest standard that we need to win championship. Crouch holds it up but he is never the stylish link man needed to unlock opposition defences week in week out – and take the pressure off our midfielders. I don’t think Riise is a great left back, and Finnan is slowly getting worse (maybe it is his age) – although he is one of my favourite players at the club and was excellent the last 2 games. Our core of Reina, Agger, Sissoko, Gerrard. Alonso and Kuyt are world class and a great back bone but unless we finally address the attacking midfield areas with top…

I gather about 1% of the forum will be reading this as I am on the ignore list of the vast majority. But I feel it needs be to discussed by the 1% at least. With DIC closing in on us what next for the reds? What happens to the club and the people in it? What do you want to happen? Lets start from top to bottom. 1. Hicks and Gillett - One might stay and if he does do we just ignore him or concentrate our efforts on getting him out? 2. Parry - Surely this incompetent fool should be now given his two year notice? I wouldn't sack him and make him rich, I am sure some toilets need cleaning or the builders constructing the new stadium will need a water/brick ca…

I never wanted Kenny sacked, after 4-5 years under the last yank cowboys, he actually had galvanised the club and united the fans (to a large extent) So getting rid of him was just stupid and i think the owners are probably regretting it a little now. 2 cup finals was not bad at all and he made Anfield roar again. Sadly he wasn't given another season to fix the poor league position of last year but he did spend too much on players like downing and caroll. So i think the owners shit themselves a bit and thought "can we trust him with more funds" I think many of us have become disillusioned with the results and some of the performances this season and it hurts l…

De Bruyne - You'd have to find room for him somehow. Varane? Honestly can't think of anyone else. I would even put Messi or C Ronaldo in ahead of any of our front 3.

Was going to come on and complain about Alan Smith , The Gerrard baiters , biased press etc etc , but it all seems to be done to death over the last day , so looks like there's not much left to moan about . Just be thankful that we're Reds , and we never paid £30 million for Schevchenko -( how shite was he?) and be thankful for all the Red memories .Amen.

Apologies if some of the following points have been covered in other threads but I just haven’t had the time to read through them all recently. First things first, for those who would listen I have been saying for yonks that no sensible businessman was going to put 75m for a third share without control over that investment. Finally David Moores realised that the only way to build the new stadium and move Liverpool forward was to sell out. Its taken him over 2 years to come to that basic understanding. The Ironic thing in all of this was he could have thrashed out a deal with Steve Morgan that would have kept him in control or at least joint control of the club. …

I was pondering this last night. What is Abramocunt going to do now? His £75m investment/ panic-buy in order to win the CL has failed miserably. His £50m striker is taking some of the blame, unsettling the likes of Drogba, and massively undermining the manager, who EVERYONE knows was told to play him last night. Many of their best players are nearer the end of their careers than the start (Terry, Drogba, Anelka, Lampard). Too many of the team look as if injury and form have taken a heavy toll. (I don't know what's happened to Essien this year). In fact, there aren't many players who have played anywhere near their best, maybe Cech, Terry, Cole? As for …

While the signing of Martin Skrtl appears to be a decent one on paper in providing adequate cover at centre-half, I can't help but wonder what this means for Jack Hobbs. Presumably Rafa views his options at centre-half as Carra, Hyypia, Agger and Skrtl so I wonder what's going to happen to Hobbs now. Even though he wasn't spectacular by any means in the games he played earlier in the season, I was fairly impressed with the lad. He looked solid and fairly assured when he he had the ball. Anyway, as the title of the thread says, what now for him? I can't see him getting many more games for us this season except for maybe the odd FA Cup appearance and reserve team fo…

The two must incompetent players I've seen play for this club in recent memory although rivalled by djimi traore. I think Roy took comfort in these two inferior beings, they could be scapegoated. Obviously we need to get rid as soon as possible along with a good few others. Realistically we won't even get half of what we payed for these clowns. What do you think Kenny will do with these two

Are there any plans for Kop Faithful? Will they continue to hold the owners to account? Are they going to still go after Hicks as some suggested or have they served their purpose now?

Our next move should be to stand shoulder to shoulder and stop the petty squabbling. Talk about divide and rule, there are people now wanting to get rid of FSG for f***sake! We got the best owners we could hope for in the circumstances. They don't interfere and they support. And if they're good enough for Kenny they should be good enough for all of us.Just remember we lost one decent Manager when Benitez left.To lose another would look like bloody carelessness! It's obvious we're up against the Establishment here and not just the sports media.Look at this morning on "Goals on Sunday".They replayed the handshakes and agreed that Evra's hand dropped as Suarez arrived.Th…

Tonights game at Woodison. An Everton team full of has beens(Neville,Gibson,Howard) and local old age pensioners (Osman and Hibbert) deservedly beat Man united with a starting eleven that cost less than our Subs bench against WBA on Saturday. Says a lot about desire and commitment.Never mind about us competing for a top four finish,I fear that they will finish comfortably above us this season.

This may have been done before, but I was sitting on a flight recently and it popped (or pooped) into my head as to what Liverpool players I think of when I see a certain squad number. It may even be that the player only played a few times in that number, but you associate him with it. So this is me. If you’re arsed, contribute - 1. Grobelaar 2. Rob Jones 3. Steve Staunton 4. Phil Nicol 5. Ronnie Whelan 6. Alan Hansen 7. Kenny 8. John Aldridge 9. Ian Rush 10. John Barnes 11. Graeme Souness 12. Ronnie Whelan (again) 13. Danny Murphy 14. Alonso 15. Redknapp 16. No one 17. Gerrard 23 Fowler
