That was the Week that Was (Sep 6-10 2021)

Monday Sep 6:

Jesus, it’s all happening on the international front. The decision to stop the Brazilian lads going proved to be a wise one as their game with Argentina was abandoned because four of the PL based Argie lads lied on their immigration forms and said they hadn’t been in the UK in the last two weeks even though the whole world saw them playing for their clubs last weekend! Not only that, they were posting photos on instagram of themselves on the private jet that took them from the UK to South America.

Was that stupid or just ballsy? I reckon more so the latter and I’m actually impressed they attempted it. They almost got away with it too, the game had kicked off before the health officials caught up with them.

Elsewhere, Naby is stranded in Guinea after some loons tried to overthrow the government or something. If that was any other player in the squad I’d be more clued up on what’s happening but I’d be lying if I said I actually gave a fuck. Harvey being sent home from the u21s is much more of a concern to me, so hopefully he’s ok.

What else? Well Trent played a half in midfield for England yesterday as they beat the mighty Andorra 4-0. He played the second half at right back. I have no idea how he played in either role but he didn’t get injured so that’s the main thing.

Tuesday Sep 7:

Saw an interview with Albert the Moron today. Actually I’m gonna stop calling him that as he’s such a fucking top lad and I genuinely like him a lot. Anyway, he said “I spoke with Jürgen Klopp about my situation (Andy Robertson took his place) and he told me he was counting on me.

“In my fifth year, I was offered to renew, but for another five years. I said no. We’d had many years in England. I have three children and spoke with my wife, and we decided that the best thing was to return to Spain. I just wanted to go back to Spain.”

We offered him a five year contract? Kinell. Thing is though, a lot of people forget that in his last season here he actually played well. There was that one train wreck performance against Sevilla but other than that he was good. He lost his place when he got injured making a great block, and when Robbo got in that was that. He was obviously much better than Moreno and we never looked back, and he got to go back to Spain, beat the mancs in a European Final and then do this, meaning everyone was a winner…..

Meanwhile, Sepp Van den Berg is on loan at Preston and he’s playing right wing back, which seems a bit mad like. Shades of Dan Burn steaming down the wing for Brighton with that. Anyway, I saw these quotes from him today. “I quickly noticed what big steps you can take in six months of Championship [football]. So I thought: if I play there for another year, I really have a chance at Liverpool. Van Dijk and I talked for a while. He asked me how I thought it went at Preston and told me that he thought it was a good choice, because making minutes is so important. Who knows, I may be next to him next season. You should always keep dreaming.”

For some reason that made me think of Les Dennis on Family Fortunes and his famous catchphrase “If it’s there I’ll give you the money myself”. He’s as much chance of playing alongside Virgil next season as I have.

Wednesday Sep 8:

Jude Bellingham? Ha! Theres more chance of the big ginger Dutchman getting his wish of partnering Virgil than this happening.

There’s not a chance in hell we’ll get him when he becomes available, because clubs with money will be ahead of us in the queue. The sad thing is he’d be brilliant for us and with Trent, Curtis and Harvey could form the core of a great team for now and the future. He’ll end up at City or Chelsea though. Maybe even United. The only way we get a player like that is if we nab him before he joins Dortmund. Same with Haaland and Sancho.

Speaking of Sancho, let’s not forget that a year or two back the talk coming from club insiders was that “if Sancho comes on the market we’ll be right in there”. How’d that work out? We aren’t getting Bellingham, which is a shame as he’s ace.

Here’s a mad statistic for you. Connor Bradley played for Northern Ireland tonight and that made him the first Liverpool player to represent them in a competitive game since….. Elisha Scott!! Fucking hell, how crazy is that?

Thursday Sep 9:

Seen a few articles this week about FSG’s policy and how it’s no longer viable because ‘sell to buy’ only works when you have clubs to sell to. I think that’s over simplifying things a bit but it is definitely a concern. I wouldn’t go as far as to say we’re exclusively ‘sell to buy’ but it is obvious the only way we can consistently spend big is by selling a star for huge cash. The problem now is even if we wanted to do that and cash in on Salah or Mané in order to freshen up the front line, who are we going to sell them to?

As funny as it is seeing Real and Barca hamstrung by finances, the knock on effect from that isn’t good as it just puts more power into the hands of the oil clubs. I’d like to think we wouldn’t sell any of our best players to City or Chelsea, so that only really leaves PSG as a possible destination if we wanted to cash in on someone. And if PSG weren’t interested but City were? Then what? Klopp’s back in Dortmund territory, with Bayern taking his best players.

It’s completely fucked and the blame for it lies squarely at the door of City and PSG for distorting the market. I’m genuinely worried about all this now because it’s beginning to feel like unless you’re owned by a human rights abusing state intent on sport washing to deflect away from their sins, you’re going to be fucked.

There’s talk that the Saudis might actually get hold of Newcastle after all now too, so that’s another one we’d have to deal with. Tell you what, there would be no set of fans in this country worse than them if they were to get taken over by money no object cunts like that. It doesn’t even bear thinking about, they’ve been sucking Saudi cock for two years anyway and they haven’t even been taken over yet.

Does anyone have a phone number for Kim Jong Un? He may be our only hope if this carries on.

Friday Sep 10:

This shit with the Brazilians and FIFA is an absolute joke. The Premier League need to show some balls here and fight for the clubs. We can’t just select Alisson and Fabinho without the league’s backing, and it isn’t just us either. City have Ederson and Jesus, and presumably there are others in the same boat. Not Everton, they’re in Brazil’s good books because they let Richarlison play in the Olympics.

Brazil and FIFA are being completely unreasonable here. There isn’t two sides to this argument, they don’t have a fucking leg to stand on and the PL need to tell them to fuck off. What can FIFA realistically do if the PL tells the clubs it’s ok to pick the Brazilian lads? They could ban the players, but that’s biting off their nose to spite their face, and besides, it’s not the players’ fault they weren’t allowed to travel.

I’ll say it again, nothing demonstrates how uncool Brazil has now become than them selecting Everton players. That will never not be appalling to me. The magic of Brazil died a long time ago, but picking Everton players is just taking a shit on the grave.

Klopp was asked about Trent’s midfield stint for England and whether there’s a chance of his long term future involving a move further forward. ““On Trent If you watch our games then you will see that Trent’s position has already changed. Not in all the games but in games where it is possible then his position changed already.”

Paul has been saying this on the podcast all season, making the point that Trent keeps popping up infield in the areas we see De Bruyne for City. As Klopp says, it might not be in every game but defo against shite like Watford, Norwich, Everton, Burnley etc

“So there is no need to now make him now a midfield player. Players play everywhere, especially good players are pretty much everywhere. Trent is not very often on the left wing that is true, but on the right wing he was already everywhere on the pitch.

“In this game, in a game where England are that dominant for example, or that we are that dominant that Trent could play in midfield, I would rather he was the six than in this case the eight.”

That’s being taken as a shot at Southgate. Maybe it is, but I suspect it isn’t. The thing is, it was a friendly against shite opposition, so if Southgate wanted to try something then why not? It’s the perfect time to do it. Maybe for Klopp the six makes more sense than the eight (I’d suggest most fans - me included - would see it the other way) but that’s in his set up. If Southgate wants to play a certain way, maybe he feels there’s a role for Trent that doesn’t involve him playing right back.

Trent is the best right back in the world when he’s playing for us, in our system. He isn’t the world’s best right back when he’s playing in a different tactical set up that doesn’t maximise his ability, and much as it’s easy to take the piss out of Southgate for that, he has a different group of players than Klopp does and probably doesn’t think he should build his team around a right back.

Obviously I don’t give a fuck about England, you all know this, and I won’t be watching the games regardless of where Trent plays. But if his international future does lie in midfield I don’t see a problem. Southgate has Reece James, who is a quality player in his own right, so if I was him, I’d be looking to see which of them can do a better job in a different position, and then I’d leave the other one at right back. I think the main thing here is we can all agree that Kyle Walker shouldn’t get a fucking look in, the absolute tit.

Finally, I can’t believe how obsessed the media still is about Ronaldo being back. Bored shitless of it, it’s absolutely relentless, headline news every fucking day. The worst part is that it’s only going to get worse after this weekend as there’s zero chance he doesn’t score in a win over Newcastle at Old Trafford. He’s favourite for the POTY award too, which is probably about right because the obsession with him is such that a dozen appearances and six goals would probably be enough. Still, on the plus side, no-one gives a fuck about Harry Kane anymore so there is that.

….and that was the week that was.

Too right I’ve have enough of Ronaldo too. So pleased their game was at 3pm today, I dread to think how Tyler would have been on commentary!

Loved the Les Dennis reference!
