The accounts are out and honestly I can’t think of anything more boring. I can’t be arsed reading through any of it as ultimately it means fuck all as these things are just too layered for average joe’s like me to understand. We made a profit in A, but look at the loss in column B, that’s ok though as it’s offset by an ownership loan that causes column C to look healthier and…. Ah just fuck off, don’t care. We know that we’re one of the more sensibly run clubs in the league and we aren’t in any trouble. We also know the wage bill is massive which is why we tend to lot splash out loads on transfers every year as the priority has been keeping the players we have. There’ll be money to spend in the summer, how much depends on the new contracts, but money will definitely be there for Slot.
The reason I don’t care about this stuff is that even the experts who go through these accounts and try to explain it to idiots like me, even they don’t actually know exactly what the fuck any of it means. Because unless you have access to every receipt then you don’t know why expenses were so high, or why the wages went up so much or any of that stuff. Because most football clubs have clever accountants who know how to offset certain expenses and reduce the amount of tax that will need to be paid and all of that stuff. I say most clubs, because obviously there’s Everton.
Some talk that Doak might be out for the season after having an op. Real shame that as he was really making some waves. There has been suggestions that the plan is for him to come back here and compete for a first team squad place next season, but this injury makes me think we should loan him out one more year to really let him kick on. If he stays here and doesn’t play, that doesn’t do anyone any good. Another year on loan to keep progressing and we could have a genuine superstar on our hands in a few years. The injuries are a concern though as he’s had quite a few of them now.
I spoke to a Newcastle fan I work with at Golf Monthly today and he didn’t really want to speak to me because “you beat us last week, you’re going to beat us in the final and then you’re going to take Isak from us”. I told him we don’t need Isak because we’ve got Darwin and he laughed at me. He doesn’t know me well enough to know that I’m not kidding. Newcastle fans are genuinely worried that we’re signing Isak though as there’s a lot of talk about it up there, but very little talk of it here (not serious talk anyway). Personally I’d say there’s far more chance of us signing Gordon.
Speaking of Gordon, he’s going to miss the final after getting sent off and I saw something in the Newcastle Chronicle today that sums up just how fucking shit local paper journalism is these days. It’s not a Newcastle thing, I’m not singling them out because it’s everywhere, but this is the kind of shit that local papers are reduced to now. I don’t even blame them really as you do what you have to do to survive I guess, but fuck me this was pathetic.
The article was entitled “Van Dijk ‘every week’ verdict after Anthony Gordon Newcastle United red card”. This is an actual newspaper remember. And they ran a piece just quoting various random Newcastle fans on twitter complaining about Gordon being sent off and how Van Dijk does this all the time. The only reason I clicked it was I assumed that for a piece like that to be written it must have had a quote from an ex player or someone with some degree of relevance. But no, just some angry Geordies lashing out on twitter. I actually feel sorry for the poor sap who wrote it, as he’s clearly just fulfilling the quota set by the bosses. I mean fucking hell, is this what you studied journalism for all those years? To be trawling through twitter looking for comments by the most clueless knobheads you can find to then write a piece around it?
Mind you, if this is the way to go I might start quoting forum posts in clickbait articles. Some of the wild takes on there could make me a fortune!
