That was the week that was (Feb 15-21 2020)

    theweekthatwas.jpg

Saturday Feb 15:

Norwich 0 L 1 Another win churned out. Wasn’t pretty, we weren’t anywhere near our best, but the result was never really in doubt. It took us 78 minutes to score and yet I always knew it was coming eventually. That’s the mark of how great this team is.

You can keep us at bay for a while, but you can’t do it indefinitely as eventually we’ll find a way. Not sure we would have if Mané hadn’t come on mind, but we’ll never know. Sadio is fucking incredible these days isn’t he? That goal was stunning, but we’re so good and we score so many great goals that ones like this are almost run of the mill now.

Norwich played like a team who knew they hd no chance and just wanted to keep the score down. Stark contrast to the fresh faced, enthusiastic, innocent side who came to Anfield on opening night and went down swinging. It’s a better league with them (and Daniel Farke) in it, but unfortunately their days are numbered.

Meanwhile, on this day 19 years ago we beat Roma 2-0 in the Stadio Olimpico. I know this because the excellent LFC History website tweeted it out. Nothing from the club though, which goes back to what I was saying last week. It’s ridiculous. You can’t airbrush Michael Owen from our history, not unless you want to remove those trophies from the trophy wall that he helped us win.

That night in Rome is something he doesn’t get anywhere near enough credit for. I remember interviewing Carra a few years after it and he was saying how Owen wasn’t supposed to play because his ankle was fucked. Heskey was meant to lead the line but was complaining about some minor knock and to everyone’s astonishment (and in some cases disgust) he ruled himself out.

Houllier had to then to turn to Owen and he played through the pain to win the game for us. We went on to win the trophy that year, and no-one contributed more to the cause than Owen. For the club to completely ignore all that is just fucking weird to me.

Sunday Feb 16:

Todd Cantwell? Fuck off, not on my watch. Firstly he’s not that good. He’s not bad, but he’s no Curtis Jones. Secondly, I can’t stand even looking at him. His face winds me up and I don’t like the fact his hairband is white. I also don’t like how he wears his socks, how he runs, how he talks, I don’t like how he’s called ‘Todd’ because outside of America nobody called Todd has ever been famous for anything.

Most of all, I don’t like his diving. If we sign him then all the titles and Champions League in the world won’t be enough to spare Jurgen from my wrath. Tory looking Jack Grealish. Steer clear.

Meanwhile, Tim Sherwood, my guy, went full on yer Da when talking about Klopp and his use of a specialist throw in coach.

I like Tim, he’s a funny guy. Even that made me laugh. Of course he’s talking shite and embarrassing himself, but he’s done it in a way that amuses me. He always does. Chris Sutton has a similar thing going, only he’s far more better at it. He’s up there with Partridge and Goldbridge.

Sherwood isn’t alone in his mocking of the throw in coach thing as Stevie Nicol was even more scathing about it. I don’t understand why you’d be so closed minded about something like this. Granted, the gains from it are only ever going to be marginal, but if you get a shitload of little things right, a lot of marginal gains add up to something significant.

Sherwood sounding off like that just made him look like a Sunday golfer sat in the clubhouse after shooting 104, loudly mocking Rory McIlroy for spending half an hour a day practicing bunker shots. It was genuinely embarrassing and did him no favours whatsoever. I doubt Klopp even knows who Sherwood is, but if he saw that I can only imagine what he’d think.

Some nice comments from Sturridge today.

Mike Gordon should call his bluff and offer him a job selling hot dogs. Seriously though, it wouldn’t have taken much for Sturridge to remembered as a legend here. If we’d won the league in 14 or if his team-mates hadn’t shit the bed in the Europa League Final after he’d scored one of the greatest final goals in club history, his legacy would be a lot different.

Monday Feb 17:

Watched the u23s play tonight at Wolves. Nine of the starting line up from the Shrewsbury game played and Liam Millar came off the bench. So the only real difference was the keeper, where Jaros played instead of Kelleher. They won 2-1 thanks to a stoppage time winner from Jake Cain.

It’s mad how they reflect the first team in so many ways. Not the quality, but the style and the mentality. Some of the football they played in flashes tonight was brilliant and Curtis Jones is unreal at this level. No-one can get the ball off him, he just manipulates it through little gaps and between opponents legs. At this level he just strides around like Zidane.

He’s fucking brilliant and he’s going to be a star. I don’t think we need to buy a midfielder this summer even though Lallana will leave. We’ve got a gem in Jones, and my money says Klopp will bring him through and won’t Phil Foden him.

Speaking of City, it’s a bit weird how some of the big hitters from the nationals are defending them. Martin Samuel actually compared their treatment with that of the Windrush deportations. Olly Holt is also fighting the not so good fight too. Some would say they must be on the Sheikh’s payroll along with Stu Brennan from the MEN. I highly doubt that. It’s far more straightforward than that. It’s about access. Say nice things about City and then take your pick from Aguero, Sterling, De Bruyne etc when it comes to the ‘big exclusive’.

You might not know this but City are extremely choosy who they allow to interview their players. They wouldn’t let Sky have access at one point (maybe still the case now, not sure) because they said there was too much LFC representation on there. The last couple of days have probably ensured Holt, Samuel and whoever else has sold out their principles to defend cheating some nice alone time with ‘Razza’ before the Euros this summer. Wait and see.

Also today, I saw another one of those Paisley CGI monstrosities courtesy of Standard Chartered. Just fucking stop it. I can just about get past the cringe factor and I can see how it ‘seemed like a good idea at the time’. What I can’t get past is the fucking terrible acting. Rushy is so wooden in this one you could easily mistake him for Pinocchio.

Tuesday Feb 18:

Atletico 1 L 0. I think the best way to describe this one is “aaaaaaarggghhhhhhh”. So frustrating and that’s exactly why they were the last team I wanted to draw. Horrible, spoiling, well organised shithousing bastards. Their keeper didn’t have to make a save, and that never happens with us.

Defensively they were really good but they were helped massively by too many of our lads being below par. Not least Trent, who’s crossing radar was way off for once. Having to sub Sadio at half time because of their shithousing didn’t help either. Correct decision though, as there was no way he was going to finish that game given the way they were carrying on.

Not the first time we’ve seen that either. Flamengo did the exact same thing. It’s funny actually, because I remember people commenting that the Flamengo game was the perfect warm up for Atletico and you can see why. So many similarities and both games were refereed by a fella completely out of his depth.

I think we’ll blow them away in the second leg but it still stings losing a game because I’d forgotten what that was like. I reckon the lads will be fucking steaming about this and will just tear into Atletico in that second leg. My prediction is we’ll be 3-0 up inside half an hour.

Meanwhile, this morning I was listening to the radio while I was in the bath. That Jim White tool was on but before I decided to switch off, he revealed that he had Mino Raiola coming on to talk about the latest episode of the hit soap “Paul Pogba Street”. Ok, this could be good, I thought. So I listened. And something remarkable happened.

I found myself on Raiola’s side. Even though I despise him and his ilk, and even in this case I don’t think he had a leg to stand on, I found myself siding with him simply because Jim White is such a humongous tool. Then Simon Jordan stepped in to ask some questions and just like that, normality was restored and I saw Raiola as the slimy, unscrupulous, greedy little fucking slug he is. Jim White truly is the fucking pits.

This Pogba situation is funny though. Solskjaer keeps ripping Raiola and Raiola isn’t the type to just let things slide, so he always blasts back. United are a fucking mess from top to bottom. Raiola said something quite cryptic though that got me wondering. Something along the lines of Ole has other things to be worrying about without concerning himself with me.

Now he may have just been referring to United being shit, but my gut tells me he’s on about the dodgy as fuck dealings Solksjaer and his agent have been linked to, not least the aiding and abetting of a serial rapist avoiding the law. Ole even made him captain!

I didn’t know about any of this until recently when someone on Twitter blew it all up in a long thread, but it’s staggering stuff and does not paint Solksjaer in a good light at all. I’m surprised more hasn’t been made of it in the national media as it’s pretty scandalous (the Telegraph did do something last week but I haven’t seen anything else).

Here’s the thread for anyone interested.

Wednesday Feb 19:

Timo Werner scores the winner against Spurs and then all but confirms he’s coming here. Of course he didn’t say it exactly, but it wasn’t your typical bog standard response to being asked about speculation of Liverpool being interested. There’s defo something afoot here.

I’ve said countless times I want Mbappe, but from an FFP perspective signing Werner is a no brainer. He’s got a £50m release clause which is less than half a Sancho and probably a quarter of an Mbappe, especially when you factor in salary.

The possibility of coming to some kind of arrangement with Nike to help finance it is probably a non-starter now that City are ‘keeping a detailed dossier’ on their rivals financial activity as even if that was done above board they’d kick up such a stink about it. So I’m resigned to it being Werner. And he’ll probably be sensational because Jurgen doesn’t get these things wrong.

Thursday Feb 20

Some 10 year old Manc is in the news after getting a letter from Klopp. The spoilt little fucker wrote to Jurgen asking him to stop winning as it’s upsetting him. Jurgen wrote back with a charming letter and now everyone is talking about it like it’s this wonderful story. Just me who thinks he either should have ignored it or replied telling him to fuck off then?

Ok ok I know, it was a nice touch. Ignore me. I’m just pissed that I’ve never had a reply from him even though I write to him once a week asking him if he wants to come round for tea and watch Rocky movies with me. Actually I did get a reply once, from the club’s legal team threatening me with a restraining order. Yet this little fucking manc gets a reply???? Pfffft.

Friday Feb 21:

The u23s beat Huddersfield 3-0 in some cup competition. No idea what it is, there seem to be loads of these random competitions now. The Melwood lads didn’t play tonight but Hoever was in the side, which seems a little odd. Is he not part of that group with Williams, Jones, Elliott etc now? The goals were scored by Millar, Van den Berg and Hardy.

Hendo is out for three weeks, meaning he’ll almost certainly miss the second leg. He’ll be missed, but that might be a game when we need a little more invention than the favoured trio of Hendo, Gini and Fab give us. Time for Keita to make his mark I think.

Hilarious cryarsing from Sterling today about City players being overlooked in Player of the Year awards. ”Especially in the last year where we have won the domestic quadruple including the league, to not have a player winning PFA Player of the Year kind of speaks for itself really.”

Quadruple!!! Hahahaha he’s counting the Charity Shield, the bad whopper. Also, ‘including the league’. You won by a fucking point, and the team in second lace had by far the best player in the league. You didn’t vote for him because you’re a cunt. He voted for you because he’s not.

"The award was given to a Liverpool player who had a fantastic season but I look at previous seasons as well when Yaya Touré scored 20 goals from midfield and he didn't win Player of the Year. Also, Sergio Agüero has been at the club for more than seven years and has scored unbelievable goals during this time, yet none of City’s players have won it.”

Sergio Aguero misses around two months of every season through injury. That’s why he’s never won it, great player though he undoubtedly is.

"I think that certain players are not treated in the same way when they are from different football clubs across the country and across the world over the past few seasons. The first year we won the league, De Bruyne was unbelievable and they gave it to another player.”

You signed for a little club mate, that’s just how it is. Do you think if Eibar were taken over by some oil cunts and cheated their way to a load of titles that they’d be treated the same way as Barca and Madrid players? No, because they’re still a small club.

"Every year we win a major trophy and it's given to an opposition player. It's that sort of thing that doesn’t depend on us, but we keep going."

Yeah you keep soldiering on little Raheem, don’t let the bastards get you down. Soft cunt.

"It is impossible to win the league for four or five times and none of the players were Player of the Year. Every team which wins the league has a player who wins Player of the Year, for sure. So, this year Liverpool win the league and a Liverpool player will win the Player of the Year for sure. We win the league for five times and we were not treated with the same respect."

You haven’t won the league five times. Clearly counting isn’t your strong suit. Thankfully you’ve Aidy for that, eh?

What a disloyal little fuck he is though. In one breath he’s bemoaning the lack of respect Man City get, while in the other he’s disrespecting Man City by talking up Real Madrid and refusing to rule out a move there. Not only that, he’s on the front of AS with a City shirt on one shoulder and a Madrid one on the other! And he talks about a lack of respect!! Fuck me, he’s the absolute worst isn’t he? Gonna be funny when he drops City like a bad habit and their fans realise what we’ve known all along.

Also today, the regular monthly “Karius headed back to Liverpool / Karius to join Besiktas” story. So bored of this, wish they’d make their fucking minds up. All his “he loves he loves me not” shit is pathetic. Turkish clubs are a fucking nightmare aren’t they? Even worse than dealing with Italian clubs. Just a massive pain in the arse. Karius is defo running down his contract and leaving on a free, because no-one is going to buy him. Unless…. quick, someone get Eddie Howe on the phone.

...and that was the week that was.

"Meanwhile, on this day 19 years ago we beat Roma 2-0 in the Stadio Olimpico." That was a such a great game - they had Cafu, Devlvecchio, Batigol, Capello as manager and won the league that year. Owen's first goal in the game was such a quality finish. I'm still not sure how the ref changed his mind for heir penalty in the second leg though, lol

Re: the Solskjaer thing. Gordon Strachan made a valid point about there being no morals in football when Suarez was front and centre at the 2014 World Cup after biting Chiellini. This sounds similar in the sense that clubs, managers and fans will continue to stick by a player if he's doing the business on the pitch and helping the team get results, even if the player's behaviour and actions on or off the pitch are reprehensible.

Surely there’s a difference between defending Suarez being a bit bitey and being complicit in helping a rapist move to Saudi Arabia to evade Interpol.

A couple of days later, the Mancs are in the news offering said brat free tickets and a stadium tour as a "loyal supporter".

I really didn't like the original story. It really felt to me like something our marketing department had dreamt up to make us look all virtuous.

"Here Jurgy, look at this kid's letter. I'll draft a reply, just sign it will you? Then I'll make sure it makes the press. OK?

"Jawohl. Das ist ein gutten idea."

*Mancs offer kid Old Trafford stadium tour and free tickets*

"Donner und blitzen vass ist diss? Diese Manc schweinhunds haven gott von uber on me gottdammit."

"Erm sorry Jurgy, I'll get me trenchcoat."

That horse bolted over a year ago Dave. He's a waste of time and hope. He's the modern-day Harry Kewell only more fragile. If he were a goalkeeper he'd be a pre-Kiev Karius without the appearances. I'm afraid I think Jurgen's perseverance with both Karius and now Keita isn't amongst his finest decisions.

Hahahahahaaaaah "...none of  City's players has won it." You idiot Sterling, "has" not "have". What a dick. Everyone knows it's "has".

*Looks round proudly*

*Keeps looking*

*waits a bit longer*

*shuffles off disappointed*

No way is Jurgen getting your letters, Dave. Someone at the club is definitely intercepting them. I bet he'd be excited as fuck to watch some Rocky movies with you, and have tea and custard creams.

Love those Sturridge comments Dave. Hadn’t seen them before reading this. Nice one.

Bit surprised you compared your boy Curtis to absolutely not your boy Zidane though.

Comparing Jones with Zidane whom you don’t rate ! That’s hard on young Curtis.

Hold on now, I've never said I didn't rate Zidane, my argument is that he's massively over-rated and nowhere near the all time great he's portrayed as. A French Paul Scholes if you like!

What I would say about him is his balance and control were remarkable, especially as he wasn't a little fella. Very graceful, superb control and manipulator of the ball. Very Curtis Jones-like in fact.

You see, that's what I always thought too. I was beginning to doubt myself and think maybe he didn't want to hang out, but seeing you confirm my thoughts has made me feel better.

Seriously? You're now telling yourself to look at a reply you wrote earlier. Didn't you see it first time like? When Jurgy's round at mine tomorrow watching stock car racing videos, abom79 and Project Farm on YouTube, I'm going to tell him how he deffo dodged a bullet not going round yours. You're soooo losing it.

Thought I was replying to Paul. Dunno what happened there.

I have no idea what abom79 or Project Farm is, but if it's anything like the whatsapp videos and photos you send me then Jurgen has no idea what he's letting himself in for.

I was kidding anyway, but you’re wrong on Zidane. He was outstanding, playmaker, match winner, assists and goals, he had everything.

Out of interest, would you put him above Platini?

Tough question, but for my generation, Platini is the best. He was the only one who could talk with Diego.
