That was the Week that Was (Dec 2-7 2024)

    wtwheader.jpg

Monday Dec 2:

Something from yesterday I want to mention as I think I forgot to put it in the match report. The coin toss. Virgil wasn’t happy about something and I joked that Kavanagh had brought his double sided coin to allow City to turn us around, but it turns out that Virg wasn’t ready because he was still looking after the mascot. The reason I mention this is because when Virg was asked about it, he actually name checked the little guy, Isaac. He didn’t need to do that, he could have said mascot, but he made a point of saying his name and I thought that was fucking awesome. Imagine how the little kid and his family felt hearing Virgil talking about him like that, almost as though he’s referring to a mate. It’s only a little thing, but it says a lot about Virgil I think.

Meanwhile, Simon Hughes says that Mo is exasperated with the lack of movement on a contract and he is willing to accept a one year deal. I’m sure he is, as long as he’s getting a hefty pay rise. Loads of people are saying its the length of contract that’s the sticking point, but it won’t be just that, it will be the salary as well. If he wants a rise, I reckon he’ll be told no chance. Same terms, not a penny more.

If he asks for four years on the same terms, he’s not getting it. Would they even stretch to three? I’d like to think so. I’d happily give him three years on his current salary. Not sure the club would, but there is absolutely no reason not to. If Mo is happy to sign for one year, yet no contract is coming, then it’s absolutely because of the salary he’s wanting because one year on the same terms is a deal that LFC would bite his hands off for.

So why the delay? My theory is that Richard Hughes knows that he’s in the strong position here. He doesn’t have to persuade Salah to stay, he just has to agree on a deal that suits all parties. So he’s not going to just give in and pay Mo whatever his agent is asking for. He doesn’t need to, because what are Mo’s options? He can threaten to leave and go elsewhere, but there’s nowhere for him to go that’s even close to giving him what he wants in terms of the whole package; money, success, prestige and records. If Mo wants to tick every one of those boxes he can only do it here.

I’m positive this deal gets done, but I think it will drag out a good while longer.

Great diary as usual, it was worth waiting. Totally spot on on Mo, where could he go ?

I was once right behind Cantona waiting for a cab in one of Paris’ station. I thought about telling him silly things or singing YNWA. But we’re not knobheads, I said nothing, that is the Liverpool way after all, isn’t it ?

You should have called his mother a French whore, then sidestepped the flying kick and punched him in the balls as he sailed past.

After that Newcastle game I did day Darwin looked like a child in a porn stars body. You mentioned Grealish looking a celeb in a charity game, that was Darwin, boy band living his dream.

I am losing faith truth be told. Ask me who should replace him? Struggling a bit on that as well.

With you on the transfer structure eye rolling at lazy journos "linking us with player x".

In for Tyler Dibbling I can get on board with that, €60m release clauses forget it...

Shearer……you’re scraping the barrel there Dave, he’s the Jon Walters of punditry.

Irrelevant though. I said great strikers love Darwin. Shearer was one of the greatest strikers.

Nothing wrong with any of that mate, I understand people losing faith as he's not done it consistently yet. I agree he was terrible against Newcastle. Completely ineffective and lacking in any conviction. He doesn't play like that every week though. In fact, performances like that are rare.

That's not to say he's great every week either, but even his biggest critics will surely agree that the Newcastle game was not the norm.

When was this mate? If it was after he finished playing I'd defo have gone over and said something to him, but it wouldn't have been insulting as I think he's fucking boss these days.

It's not helpful that Ngumoha is being labelled a 'wonderkid' as it sets an expectation that few ever realise. Owen and Sterling were exceptional, and hardly any kids go on to achieve the honours those two got. Preston obviously knew of his reputation/hype as they doubled and even tripled up on him. Only time will tell how good he'll be or whether he'll be another one of great promise who fell by the wayside. He has the quickest feet I've seen in a long time and he's shown plenty of end product so far - and won a penalty in today's youth CL match. What was noticeable at Preston was how much of a physical mis-match it ws, as it so often is with our younger teams, who are invariably technically superior to their opponents but are generally lightweight. Ngumoha was one of at least 6 16-year olds in our team & bench. I don't know what the profile of the Preston team was, but they seemed much bigger, possibly older and they outmuscled and overpowered our kids. Speculation, I know, but I suspect Preston had their strongest possible team out - even our kids will be considered a big scalp. The likes of Nallo and Nyoni still qualify for the FA Youth Cup, but they involved in higher profile stuff these days.

Definitely has the quickest feet I've seen. Ronaldo-esque.

I'm just too long in the tooth now to be taken in by hype as so many of these next great things have amounted to nothing. Ngumoha might turn out to be incredible, or he might be playing in League Two by the time he's 21.

I don't think the hype does him (or any kid in his situation) any favours, but then I also saw an interview with him recently when he said his ambition is to win the Ballon d'Or!!

Diary is back anyway, hope you choke on it (not you @piphomer as you said please).

I’m surprised @Arnaud hasn’t been on your case yet.

Unless he slid into your PM’s.

Dave and I agreed on a new contract where I get a daily diary no matter how his health is. No figures will be given out, it’s not about money anyway.
