That was the week that was (Dec 15-21 2018)

Saturday Dec 15:

Enjoyed this from Alisson: “Generally, I prefer not to celebrate too much so I can concentrate on the game and stay level-headed but the goal came at the end of the game so I could let it all out. I ran to the middle of the field and did my usual celebrations, pointing to the heavens, thanking God, and then I looked to one side and I saw Jurgen and I thought, 'What is he doing?'

"It was a great moment and I gave him a big hug. I appreciate it wasn't the correct thing to do and he has been punished for that - but it was worth it."

It defo was worth it, and it’s funny that the players were just as amused by it as we were.

We’ve got the Mancs tomorrow, and Paul Ince was asked to select a combined LFC / Man Utd XI. He says not one United player would get in it, other than ‘maybe’ De Gea. He’s right too. I saw Neville do this the other day and he had some token losers like Bailly and Pogba in there. He even mentioned wanting to try and get Luke Shaw in there only he hasn’t played much. Fuck off, as if any of them are getting anywhere our team!!

Being deadly serious here, they wouldn’t even get in a second XI. I’m not taking Bailly over Lovren or Matip, and that Pogba wastrel isn’t getting into any midfield that requires players to some tactical discipline and not recklessly lose the ball in dangerous areas for 90 minutes.

I know there’s always an element of bias in these things, but I don’t even think there’s a debate to be had. Name one United player other than De Gea who would have a legitimate chance at getting in our side? A while back maybe Valencia would have a shot (good player him), but he can’t even get in ahead of the other slapdick right backs they have now.

Rashford and Martial are both good players who’d fit right in but are you taking either ahead of the front three we have? Nope. Maybe a couple of them could compete for a spot on the bench, but that's it.

Meanwhile, Chris Sutton and Robbie Savage have an argument about the signing of the season. Savage says Torreira from Arsenal, Sutton said it’s Alisson. Sutton is funny as fuck, I love watching him. “Why would you have him over Alisson?” he asked. Savage responded “it’s just my opinion” and Sutton just shot him down with “well it’s wrong”. Most entertaining pundit on TV.

Sunday Dec 16:

L 3 Man Utd 1 It’s always boss beating them (and it’s been way too long) but it’s all the more sweet when it sends up top. It wasn’t that hard though was it? I mean, I know we needed Shaq to come on to win it for us, but they’re shite and it was fairly routine in the end. There’ll be at least ten teams will give us a more stern test at Anfield this season. Shit, even Everton put up more of a fight than this.

Shaqiri is ace, I love him. Fabinho was fucking phenomenal today too, as was Robbo (he was so good he even drew special praise from Mourinho, who rarely does anything like that). Special mention to Clyne as well for coming in cold and doing exactly what we needed him to do.

We’re just better than them in every single area of the pitch (except in goal, but the difference there now is fairly negligible) and especially in the dug out. Mourinho likes to talk about all of his trophies and belittles Klopp for not winning much, but there’s no comparison between these two. Klopp is better than him in every single aspect of management, and had he spent virtually his whole career cherry picking jobs where the deck was stacked in his favour then his trophy cabinet would be bulging too.

The gulf between us and them is now as big as it was when they were in their pomp and we were bumming around in 6th and 7th. It’s great, but there is one really significant difference in the situations. We had to play catch up despite being at a financial disadvantage, which is obviously really difficult. As shit as they are, they can just sack Mourinho and spend half a billion pound in one window.

Doesn’t guarantee they’ll get it right, but it’s a significant edge to have. As things stand they’re a threat to nobody but themselves. So yeah, long live Mourinho.

Monday Dec 17:

Bayern Munich then eh? Other than Porto there was no ‘easy’ option, but it could have been a lot worse for us than Bayern, who are no longer the force they have been. What everyone seems to overlook though is there’s a four month gap between the group stage and the knockouts, and a lot can happen in four months. Right now Bayern look vulnerable, but they might be flying in a few months.

Having the first leg at home suits us this time though because otherwise we’d be looking at an away leg without Big Virg. Him missing the first game shouldn’t be that big a deal, but you wouldn’t want to play a tough away game without him. Personally I’m gutted we didn’t get Real Madrid, as Van Dijk or no Van Dijk we’d smash them cunts everywhere.

The U23s blew it late against Swansea tonight. Not only did they give up a stoppage time equaliser but they then missed a penalty that would have won it. I’ve said it before, but the 23s just seem a bit pointless. They’re just a mish mash of lads who are hoping to go out on loan, lads who’ve been sent back from loan, senior lads who can’t get a game and then a select few of the best kids from the 18s.

I’m looking forward to Brewster getting fit again as he’ll give me a reason to start watching them again, because at the moment it’s a real chore and it’s about to get worse with Ejaria coming back. The 18s are great fun, the 23s not so much. The 16 year old defender from Ajax looks a player though.

Tuesday Dec 19:

Ah they’ve only gone and done it, the fucking fun spoiling bastards. This is even worse than when they sacked Moyesy. I suppose we should take some pleasure in the fact we put the final nail in his coffin, but there’s no joy to be had in this. I see people mocking him, but he’s walking away with £20m so who’s the real loser here? Us, that’s who. Because he was massively holding them back and if they get their next appointment right then they’ll be challenging again because they’re fucking loaded.

In the short term, I really hope this doesn’t ruin all the enjoyment of watching Goldbridge. I mean, Unai Emery has single handedly killed Arsenal Fan TV (I haven’t watched a second of it since Wenger left) and if United bring in someone to get them playing actual football again I fear that Goldbridge might become unwatchable.

Meanwhile, the countdown begins to Pogba’s dancing instagram post…

pogba.jpeg

Hahaha fucking hell, I swear to God that no more than five minutes afterI typed that, he posted the above picture of himself smirking and said “caption this”. Ok, he wasn’t dancing, but I’m still pretty pleased with how well I called that one.

Of course it was then claimed he hadn’t posted it and it was a scheduled message by whoever runs his account. I don’t care either way, but he’s not really going to get the benefit of any doubt is he? Even Gary Neville isn’t buying it, and he replied to it by saying “you can do one too!”. I love a good manc fight! This is great.

Now attention turns to who will take over for now. Ince reckons it should be Steve Bruce and Mark Hughes. Please God make it so. In fact, let them bring Ince on board too and what’s Mark Robins doing these days? How about Keano? Oh God, please let them give it to Keano, imagine him with Pogba!

One of the funniest things about Sunday was when Neville was talking about Lingard launching a fashion label last week. “I don’t mind him launching his own fashion label, but not in Liverpool week” he said, while Keane looked at him in utter disgust at the very idea of a footballer doing anything other than just playing football. Neville is actually quite old school, so I don’t even know what description best fits Keane. “Intolerant nutter” maybe?

As for us, the u18s got through in the Youth Cup after a stoppage time winner from Bobby Duncan, who scored two and also had an assist. Love watching him and Glatzel together. Great partnership that.

Wednesday Dec 20:

Leicester had a chance to knock City out of the league cup last night but they lost on pens. No shame in that, but what the fuck is Puel doing making loads of chances and fielding a weakened side? They aren’t winning the league and they aren’t going down. Why is he prioritising a league game at Chelsea over a chance to get to a cup semi final?

Really can’t get my head around this. It’s like when Everton do it. What the fuck are you thinking? You don’t have bigger fish to fry. This is your fucking fish. It’s not the biggest but it’s the best fish you’re going to get.

What about Arsenal though eh? Defeats are like buses, none for ages then two come at once. They had this one coming after the way they reacted to beating Spurs the other week. It was all a little bit Everton, apart from the ‘winning a derby’ bit, obviously. They over celebrated, and tonight they got their arses handed to them by a Spurs side who were clearly out for revenge. Spurs now play Chelsea in the other semi, which will be tasty.

City got the easy draw and will play League One Burton Albion, but I bet they give City a tougher game than half the Premier League do, simply because they’ve got nothing to lose and won’t play scared. Obviously City will win, and I hope they do as maybe having to prepare for a cup final might impact on their league results, even if it’s just a tiny bit.

Thursday Dec 21:

Neil Ruddock boasts that his best days at Anfield were the six months at the end when he never played but was paid 24k a week for doing nothing. See, that might be something to brag about if he still had the money, but the big fat mess is skint. He doesn’t even have the pound they used to pass around to eachother on the pitch, the fucking loser. He might be a worse twat than Diouf, I can’t really decide.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer is named United boss and there are some reports that it’s even going to be a permanent thing. Fucking hell, I hope so. This would be like Klopp leaving and us appointing Ronny Rosenthal in his place. Except Rosenthal hasn’t already managed in the Premier League and been relegated. Seriously, other being a supersub who specialised in late goals, what qualifications does this little goblin faced fuck have to manage one of the World’s biggest clubs? I’m not complaining, I’m just staggered, that’s all.

Lovren says we can emulate the 'Arsenal Invincibles' and go through the season unbeaten. LFC twitter says “shut your fucking mouth, we’re gonna lose at Wolves now, you absolute twat”.

Bobby says we can emulate the 'Arsenal Invincibles' and go through the season unbeaten. LFC twitter says “hahaha love the confidence Bobby lad!”.

Poor Dejan, so misunderstood. He didn’t actually say anything that bad, but the headlines always look worse than the quotes. He could have just said “we’ll take every game as it comes” but it’s not his style. Since Big Virg came in, Lovren has turned into Mr Irrational Confidence Guy, and I for one love it. As long as we don’t lose, because if we do then it’s clearly his fault.

Friday Dec 22:

Wolves 0 L 2 That’s a proper big boy win that. Horrible weather, difficult opponents, no margin for error, no problem. Wolves are good, especially against the better teams. They’ve got a style of play that is suited playing better opposition and I might even go as far as to say that outside of the top six they’re the biggest test we’ll have to face.

They had their moments and our performance wasn’t perfect, but all things considered it was fairly comfortable. The conditions made it really difficult to play our normal game and some of the passing wasn’t of the usual standard, but for the most part we were good.

Virgil is so dominant it’s almost unfair. He’ll beat the tallest strikers in the air, and he’ll outrun the quickest ones on the ground. No other defender in the league is matching Traore in a sprint and then taking the ball off him like he’s a small child. Mo is looking great again now too and we’re on a fucking roll, churning out win after win.

Over to you, City.

Excellent, as usual. Re the CL draw - there was another 'easy' option - Schalke, who are utter gash this season. We all know who got them in the draw. Same team who then got Burton in the LC draw.
