Premier League Round Up (Apr 1-3 2025)

    roundupheader.jpg

No weekend games but there was a full midweek schedule of fixtures so I’ll start with Tuesday night, as Arsenal edged out Fulham at the Emirates thanks to ‘Star Boy’ who returned with a goal. Great news for those long suffering Gooners who have seen their team so decimated by injuries all season. Finally, light at the end of the tunnel.

Sadly for them, that light was the oncoming train as Gabriel got steamrollered by it and will miss the rest of the season with a badly torn hamstring. If this ‘race’ was close that would be a big boost for us, but as it is it doesn’t make any difference. It does make a difference to their Champions League hopes though, as they’ve got Real Madrid next week. I’m not sure how I feel about that, as my primary stance is always “fuck all of the other English clubs” when it comes to our competition.

I don’t ever want to see Arsenal winning it, but would I be upset if Real Madrid came a cropper? Nope. If you could guarantee me that no English club was going to win it this year though, then I’d sign up for Arsenal knocking Madrid out in a fucking heartbeat. But you can’t guarantee me that so I’ll reluctantly have to hope that Arsenal go out, and Gabriel’s injury certainly increases the chances of that. I’m neither happy nor unhappy about it, but there is something highly amusing about it, because it’s Arsenal.

They took the lead against Fulham with a spawny goal from Merino, as his hopeful shot was deflected past Leno by a defender. There wasn’t much in the game to that point. Arsenal had most of the ball but weren’t doing much with it, while Fulham were doing nothing.

The longer it went, the more Fulham’s counter attacking threat started to show, but Saka came on and scored within a couple of minutes to settle Arsenal's nerves. My boy Muniz missed an absolute sitter late on, which actually proved crucial in the end because he did score soon after. Had he put the first one away Arsenal might have crumbled. Not that it really matters to us now. Would be nice to get it done sooner rather than later though. Maybe Everton will do us a favour this Satu.... yeah I can't even finish that sentence. We know how that will go.

I watched a bit of the Chelsea - Spurs game, and apart from one bit of handbags, it was tame. Especially compared to what went on at Anfield the previous night. Fans of the London clubs always moaning about the number of derbies they have to play, yet they never see the kind of assaults on players that we have to put up with on a regular basis. Red cards are far more common in Merseyside derbies than any other derby - desoite the fact that there should actually have been a whole lot more. And I really can't believe that any of the London clubs have to put up with the hostility and hatred our lads face at Goodison. The Spurs-Chelsea one when Spurs were in contention that year got a bit tasty - can't think of a single other one.

And Newcastle - wow, cringe.

Depending on how severe City's punishment is, finishing 18th might keep you up.

So Ipswich and Leicester still may have something to play for.

Can't see it. Any punishment would almost certainly not happen this season, as they'd drag it out. I'd rather it was enforced next season anyway, for a whole number of reasons.

I think you're right Dave, but the lawyers from Leicester and Ipswich might be interested in the timing.
