Wolverhampton Wanderers 1 Liverpool 2 (Sep 27 2024)

Ok, it wasn’t good and we can play a lot better, but a win is a win and despite not hitting the heights we’d like to, we deserved this one. Not that it matters what you deserve or don’t deserve, but as poor as we were in attack for large periods of the game, it’s worth pointing out that Alisson had nothing to do and that the goal we conceded was entirely self inflicted.

So that’s a good thing as defensively we got it right. The goal apart, we defended well and kept Wolves at arm’s length pretty much all day. Had we been at the races with our attacking play then this would have been one of those comfortable three or four goal margin of victory type games, because Wolves were there for the taking.

That isn’t a criticism of them, they actually did pretty well considering they were stretched to the limits defensively due to injuries and illness, but we really ought to have made more of that than we did. The opportunity was there for us to slice through them, but too often we didn’t capitalise. It was one of those days when it didn’t click up top, but the organisation was good and Wolves got no joy at all trying to play through us. We pressed high at times, and then dropped into our defensive shape at others and just blocked off all the passing lanes.

This was especially noticeable in the last 10-15 minutes when Wolves were just passing around between Lamina and the keeper while the crowd - and Gary Neville - got increasingly frustrated by it. We were just sitting in position and they didn’t know what to do. If they hit it long then Virgil or Konate just gobbled it up.

Wolves did start the game quite brightly though and were marginally the better side in the opening 20 minutes or so. We looked a bit unsettled and it wasn’t helped by Trent picking up the most stupid booking of the season so far. I’d actually fine him for that. He said last week he’s told Slot to be tough on him and to highlight his mistakes in meetings. Well this is one for Monday morning. Show this and ask him what the fuck he’s thinking, because getting booked for something so stupid, so early is how costly red cards happen. Just ask Arsenal.

I liked that “premier league, corrupt as fuck” chant by Wolves. Hardly likely to change things, but it’s something.

I also liked that they’d boo our songs in the second half. They didn’t want to sing their own songs, they just didn’t want to hear ours. It’s that kind of pettiness I can get behind.

While I would point out that Dom is a midfielder and Darwin is a CF who you expect to finish, I would agree that he should have buried that. Even a dink towards the top of the net would have seen the ball in over the keeper.

I think Darwin will get the nod against Bolgna.

They just completely cheapen the legitimate arguments they have when they're singing that for any old shit. It started with the free-kick and booking for Andre, which is just an every day decision that will be given much more often than not. You chant that for a nothing incident like that, and who is going to listen when you do have an actual complaint.

The boys who cry, Wolves.

Over-ruled. He was basically a forward at Leipzig.

I thought we looked exactly like what we are. A team in transition, learning to play a new way. Hence the blind passes to no-one, a little confusion at times etc. Good three points. We will get better.

The below about Konate interested me. Makes you wonder if our fitness team were shit and hence the constant fucking injuries.

Hopefully won't jinx it but no daft injuries so fa...... no I'll stop right there!

Virgil van Dijk speaks about Ibrahima Konate to BBC Radio Merseyside after Liverpool's win at Wolves: "I think we need everyone to be at their best. He is a fantastic player who still can be better. As you saw, he is important with the goal, he is defensively solid, a bit unlucky with the goal we conceded, but obviously the qualities he has are outstanding in my opinion. He is learning, growing, getting better and looking after himself much better in order to be ready every three days as that's what asked. And also we have a young player behind him in Jarrell, who is also doing well. We have to keep pushing each other and he is doing a good job."

Top report Dave. One thing that hasn't been mentioned much as far as I can see is Slot's post match interview when it sounded like he was saying we have the same players as 2 years ago but now have the pressure of midweek Champions league must win games as well. Definitely sounded like he was saying the squad needs strengthening, even saying the fans expected it.

Si Hughes wrote something about a year or so ago suggesting that there was internal disagreement about how we dealt with fitness. However, in the then leadership vacuum at the club Klopp’s backing of Andreas Kornmeyer (for he was the focus) won out.

Yeah i was thinking this the other day as you guys always talk about making wholesale changes for Premier League / Champions League weeks..  what if the fitness guys were just proper shit under Klopp? Or Klopp's intense playing and training style meant that 5 or 6 changes were necessary all the time?  It might be completely different under Slot and his backroom staff. I personally think it would be great if we kept a settled team and just made maybe 2 or 3 changes week to week if need be. 5 subs now mean its a proper squad game anyway and you can field the kids / more fringe players in the FA and League cups.

Maybe the old staff were just brutally beating the players for hours on end. Hopefully we'll see a big improvement on the injury front this year.

In other news, Chiesa is out of tomorrow's game...
