I think that game went pretty much how it should have done. By that I mean when we’re thinking about what should happen against a team that plays the way Spurs do, this is it. You watch how wide open they are, how naive they are, and think “if we’re on it we’ll fucking take them to the cleaners”. We were, and we did.
Six goals was the minimum we should have come away with really. It could easily have been more, probably should have, but we visibly eased off at 5-1 and that kind of skewed the result a little bit. Before that, Spurs weren’t in it. We utterly dominated the game up until we got the fifth goal, and then we got sloppy and Spurs decided to salvage some pride instead of just taking their lead from us and letting the game peter out.
Once we realised they weren’t going to just lie down, we knuckled down again and put Spurs back in their box. If we hadn’t taken pity on them at 5-1 this could have gotten really out of hand, but the ungrateful fuckers didn’t take the hint and they’re lucky we only scored six.
We’re getting loads of praise for this performance and everyone seems to be talking us up for the title now. It’s almost like this game has made all of the pundits throw the towel in and concede the title to us. I don’t feel any differently now than I did before. I enjoyed seeing what we did to Spurs, but I don’t think it means anything other than three points, and I think the game says far more about Spurs than it does us.
I’m not downplaying what we did, I just don’t think it’s the big deal that a lot of others do. Frankly, in my mind there was no way that Arne Slot was not going to make mincemeat of Postecoglu and his schoolboy mentality. One of the few problems we’ve had this season has been sluggish starts that have occasionally been a result of the opposing coach doing something completely different to what they normally do. We’re really fucking good, so any coach worth his salt knows they need to change things up to try to disrupt whatever plan Slot has come up with.
Here’s the thing though; Postecoglu won’t do that. He won’t change no matter what, because “this is what we do, mate”. I always go back to this, but the moment I knew this fella was a fraud was when he went down to nine men against Chelsea and still carried on playing exactly the same way. Afterwards he said even if they only had five men he’d still play that way. And that’s why you’ll fail.
So when I saw they were unchanged from their win over United on Thursday, I knew this was a game we should be winning easily if we showed up. They had a day less than us to prepare, most of our lads were nicely rested and there was a massive mismatch between the two coaches.
