Tottenham Hotspur 1 Liverpool 0 (Jan 8 2025)

    matchreportheader.jpg

Fuming. Absolutely fucking fuming. I’m disappointed with our performance, but I’m fucking fuming with the officials. The winning goal is a fucking scandal on a few levels, while the speed with which Paul Tierney waved away a clear foul on Jones in the box late on does not sit right at all. But it’s Paul Tierney, so….

I’ll get to all of that in due course, but I’m not going to use that to gloss over the unacceptable performance we put in. This is a team we put six past a few weeks ago, and they were even more depleted this time. None of their injured players were back but they had lost Sarr and Maddison to suspension.

I can blame the referee for the goal we conceded, but who is to blame for us failing to score against one of the most defensively weak teams in the country? Not scoring against Spurs is fine if they have their first choice back four out there, but this was the same defensive unit we annihilated a few weeks ago.

Spurs were definitely less gung ho than usual, but they didn’t park the bus. Far from it. So what changed? First and foremost, Dom wasn’t there. He ran Spurs ragged a few weeks ago and he was the key to that victory as they couldn’t cope with him. Replace him with Curtis and it’s chalk and cheese. Without wanting to lay too much of this at Curtis’ door, he’s not been good in that role and has been far better in one of the deeper positions.

There was a lot more wrong with this performance than just Curtis being ineffective though. Nevertheless, we’ve missed Szoboszlai massively and his value to the team is clear to everyone now. Slot went with many of his first choice starters and threw in a sprinkling of lads who needed game time, but on reflection he may as well have made more changes because we couldn’t have done much worse.

Agree with all that, especially regarding the Tsimikas foul.
Bergvall is late (not for the first time) but makes sure he cleans Tsimikas out as well, nowhere near the ball. It’s a booking all day long and I expect the referee was trying to level up from when he booked Bergvall earlier for the Diaz dive after Porro had caught Luis first.

As you say, we have chance to make reparation in a month or so, but I’m hoping we’re back in the groove before then because it was a second poor performance on the bounce.

Spot on from all aspects including the emotion. More concerned over performances overall. Apparently Slot said he wants to keep the Rhythm in the players. Not sure this is the Rhythm he meant.

We know Dom ran riot last time to the point he got cramp, so playing the same way without him was always ending badly.

We just couldn't seem to get round their press and energy, we lacked tempo, desire and ideas, and they still couldn't easily beat us.

We looked like we were going for the world record of unforced errors.

We have trouble with Forest away (and home) last minute winners aside, even in their Cooper days we struggled.

If Slot needs a real away statement win Forest could be it, hope that has vibes of Boxing Day Leicester away, go there and put out a statement, the fans need it more that most!

Let's hope Spurs are at it v Arsenal as well

Agree Ali having one of those brain fart games. Needs to pack that shit in v Chris Wood

I'm glad you mentioned the lack of runners for Quansah, as I thought he was getting some unfair stick. I was bawling t the tv:'Somebody fucking well show for him', as no-one was either coming short or running in behind, symptomatic of a sloppy first half hour.

Re the Joelinton one - IIRC, Anthony Taylor (for I am pretty sure it was he), couldn't go back and give him a 2nd yellow because he'd played advantage and because of they tpe of foul (cynical pull back). Theorinoy is that there was fuck all advantage to us as they had a 6-2 numerical advantage and our counter attack petered out!

The roles of Atwell and Tierney in last night's fiasco should come as no surprise to anyone, they're both fucking terrible. Does anyone know why Tierney seems to only ever be on VAR these days? Have his little legs given up on him?

Not what offside is supposed to be, but that genie isn't getting put back in the bottle any time soon.

Postecoglu spoke some shite after the match, but also had a boss rant about VAR and how he can't believe we've allowed the game in this country to become as fucked as it is by technology.

Luis dived from the tackle but e was already off balance from Porro's foul on him.

More and more recently we've had players at the back standing with a stationary ball, possibly their choice, possibly lack of runners ahead. But if you're standing still and the ball is stationary it's next to impossible to get some pace on the ball and you're much more easily pressed into hasty passing. Annoys me to hell

True, and I would describe it more as hurdling a challenge that was never going to win the ball, rather than diving.

That first one looks iffy on a VAR replay, but that's a booking 10 times out of 10 on the field, and VAR doesnt get involved on yellows anyway.

Similar to one of Jota's booking against *checks notes* Spurs. Only he ended up getting a second one.

Fuck Spurs.

Spurs were making snidey, late  tackles all game and we kept playing on so the ref played advantage and didn't book them. We need to be more cynical sometimes and go down when these things happen.

I hate him, sorry.

He's a sourfaced moaner with cynical motivations, but because he throws in the odd quip or Australian colloquialism, all's well with the world.

I believe the main reason that bum ref didn't send that lad off was because he had Postecoglu on his mind.  Like when Riley was mindful of Mourinho (see below!), and every ref in the league was mindful of Ferguson.

This is what you get when you continually moan and moan about referees and nobody calls you out.

In my view, Postecoglu bought that decision the previous week with his "all things being equal, all things being equal, all things being equal" (which he than claims is not about referees who do a great job - after he's benefitted from a cock up).

I can't stand the bloke.  He's horrible.

He's a coward and a hypocrite.

I'd have had a sliver of respect for him if he'd admitted they were fortunate.  But like that egregious cock-up last year, he shrugs and moves on, and deflects with some little Aussie expression or complaint about a refereeing decision from earlier in the year.

He did the same by deflecting onto a wider discussion about VAR.  No, mate, despite your constant moaning about being hard done by, your team has benefitted from some of the worst refereeing displays in recent memory.

Ferguson used to do it all the time.  He'd get 4 outrageously beneficial decisions, then on the week when he didn't get the fifth, he'd be straight in the media lambasting the same ref and saying "We never get anything from these referees".

I hate Postecoglu.  Straight out of the Ferguson playbook that.

Oh, and he's a fraud, too.  "I'll never compromise" etc.  Except he does.

Anyway, enough.  If you want to feel as angry as me, watch this...

I also can't believe that this has entered into the discussion as a fact.

Diaz clearly skipped out of the way of the challenge, but look where the ball is when the lad catches him.

He didn't dive.

If Porro had got the yellow, I'd say fair enough.  He couldn't book both, but the lad is NOT hard done by by getting a yellow.

Haha - no idea who I was apologising to. Maybe I was feeling guilty as I’d just had a bit of a rant at Adam, too.

Slot has been seething about that Forest loss at Anfield. He keeps referencing it. He’ll want to beat them at their shithole.

Bang on report Dave , I wondered why the penalty was dismissed so quickly and hadn't realised Tierney was on Var makes complete sense now .

Hopefully the players are as pissed off as us for the 2nd leg and we put these twats back in their box
