PSV Eindhoven 3 Liverpool 2 (Jan 29 2025)

    matchreportheader.jpg

I know it didn’t matter, and that we finished top anyway, but this defeat still stung me a little. I really wanted the win and to keep the 100% record, but I would have been fine with a loss if we just hadn’t shown up or if I felt like it was deserved. That’s not the case, we did not deserve to lose this game at all and the makeshift side we put out gave all they had.

So I was disappointed. Not with them, but for them. PSV haven’t lost at home for 50 odd games but had we been a bit luckier they’d have lost this one. We did give away sloppy goals and that was our undoing, but we were never outplayed or under any real pressure. So aside from the result there was a lot to like, and ultimately we still finished top anyway (thanks, Atalanta).

We kind of knew what the line up would look like when we saw how many of the big hitters were left at home. Slot’s options were somewhat restricted, and he then lost Darwin on the day of the game to illness. So he didn’t have a great deal of options with experience, but I was still a little surprised by a couple of things. I assumed Endo would be in the back four and that Morton would start in midfield. Instead, we had both Robbo and Kostas in the side, Endo was in midfield and McConnell got the nod over Morton.

I felt bad for my boy Tyler. He’s been in and around it all season without hardly getting any playing time. He could be playing for Leverkusen or Atalanta this season but we kept him around and have barely used him because we’ve got Gravenberch, Macca, Curtis and Endo ahead of him, but now he’s sat on the bench watching McConnell getting minutes ahead of him too? Not gonna lie, it felt arlarse. But then McConnell was fucking brilliant and completely justified his selection. They could have both played though and Robbo could have had the night off.

Robbo did ok at centre back but picking both him and Kostas when one of them will be starting at Bournemouth seems a bit odd to me. Given that Robbo was subbed in the second half we can probably assume that he’ll get the nod this weekend. We got exposed defensively and gave away some bad goals, but that’s to be expected given the amount of changes we made and that Robbo is starting for the first time in a position he’s never played.

The football we played was really nice though, especially in the first half. We took the game to them and I was convinced we were going to win the game because despite all the changes we were clearly better than them. Until we weren’t.

It was an open game with plenty of space between the lines. We had no problem playing through them, and then the longer the half went they were doing the same to us. It made for an entertaining spectacle and I was really enjoying it up until we conceded twice in first half stoppage time. That wasn’t as much fun to watch.

I don't understand some of the moaning from some about the result. I thought we dominated them in the first half, we were just a bit slow to react defensively which led to the goals but for me, it was purely down to not being able to match their physicality at times and the cunt referee allowing them to kick shit out of our players, then being a picky twat over any little thing against us. He couldn't wait to get his cards out, it was like he was just waiting to fuck us at any opportunity.

I think we struggled in the second half purely due to PSV being dirty bastatds and the lads probably not being able to match their level of aggression because the ref couldn't wait to get the cards out.

I think if we were a bit sharper at the back we'd not have conceded and would have gone on to batter them 5 nil or something. I'm actually quite pleased with the overall play, we looked full of belief and watching how quickly we moved the ball under pressure and instinctively shows how well they're being coached despite being away from the first 11 most weeks.

I was very impressed with McConnell. He's always looked very tidy, similar to Morton actually but he's really shot up in height and looks stronger. He's got really good feet, great technique and reminds me a bit of Curtis in how well he protects the ball. Despite being injured for a while, he looks at home playing at this level. Youngsters can look tidy and competent but he definitely has an edge about him and make a noticeable impact, a bit like Bradley in how they're very positive and competitive players.

I thought Quansah was good too aside from that clearance, but lately you can see he's settled and no longer second guessing himself, he looked really good on the ball too with some good dribbling in tight spaces. Don't understand some of the cry arsing about 'bad performances' last night, I guess some people have shite in their eyes and can't see properly!

McConnell and Morton are obviously good players, time will tell if they are good enough for Liverpool.

Elliott was good when playing and influential when playing in midfield.

Chiesa was OK, nothing special with regards to his pedigree. I even thought He was a bit lightweight when contacts happened.

It’s a definite red card for the young lad, it must have been horrible for him though, but that will make him stronger.

As Dave wrote last week : “bonnet de douche”. Still haven’t figured out what that meant.

Hope Brest will go through to have a legendary game. You are going to love Guingamp….

For me, the squad players let down the kids a bit apart from Chiesa who was excellent.

Endo, Elliott and Quansah were all guilty of mistakes that cost us. You sort of expect they will step up as leaders in a game like this but they were disappointing. Elliott in particular looks like he's trying too hard to stand out from the crowd with over ambitious passes, giving the ball away.

McConnell was ace and Morton was very good when he came on. I thought Tyler was a bit passive against Accrington and the message got home that he has to assert himself.

I think Slot wanted to play the experience of Endo alongside the youth of McConnell in midfield but in hindsight, he should have played at the back where he was commanding in the FA Cup tie and our defence was shaky.

It's annoying we lost but it's a long tough season and we saved the legs of our first team for the big games to come starting on Saturday.

We had a really tough CL group compared to many others and deserve some luck in the draw tomorrow having emerged as 1st out of 32, best in Europe

Had to laugh at the PSV players showboating at the end against 10, most of whom play for the U21s. I’d be interested to see how they’d get on at Anfield against the first 11….

I forgot to mention that in here and on the pod. Their coach wasn't happy about it, described it as "terrible". Fair play to him. I thought Kostas should have put one of them in the stands when they started that shit.

Can’t believe we did not get a free kick when Chiesa was about to run past a defender  on the outside after having put the ball past him and the defender just pushed him into the boards, a cameraman and the end a reserve warming up.

The big, positive surprise for me was McConnell. I must admit that I had nearly written him off as too slow, both with his feet and his decision making. This was something else.

Morton also good. Chiesa starting to show what he can do. Credit to him for never letting his head drop but instead work hard and probably becoming a big resource for us in the later stages of the title race.

Quansah was good for most of the match, but not lucky with the clearance. Crazy to write him off, there is a potential top, top future CB in there.

Mediocre from Kelleher, Bradley, Robbo, Kostas and Gakpo this time.

My disappointments: Elliot and Endo. These are maybe the two most important back-up players in the squad and we rely on them to deliver when they are called up. I have seen Elliot as our Bernardo Silva, but without the cuntish personality. Clever movement and passes, opening defenses, releasing passes at the right moments. Seeing him making 90% wrong choices when he got the chance to play a full match was very worrying. Is this the true Elliot?

As for Endo; you got to love the attitude, but he is just not good enough. If we are forced to use him because of an injury to Grav, we can wave goodbye to the league title.

We have the best midfield in the world in Dom, Grav and Macca, but the back up for them is critically weak. McConnel can probably become a top player, but he will probably a year or two before he is near the same level as them. Curtis is too inconsistent.

That ref was appalling all night and, though you say he just happened to get in the way with Endo, he did it repeatedly through the game, hasn't got the nous to get out of the centre of play. He shouldn't be anywhere near a CL game.

Frustrating game, played ok other than some poor defending.

I can't say I enjoyed the game as I don't even like to see the u18's lose. But I would say I was uplifted by a great display against a team who are no mugs as there home record and position shows.

Don't think I would point a finger at anyone as it was just a good team performance.

I am really enjoying this Slot ride.

I thought Queev should have done better for (I think) the second goal, he should have come out to narrow the angle, and then would have had a better chance at saving it.
