I know it didn’t matter, and that we finished top anyway, but this defeat still stung me a little. I really wanted the win and to keep the 100% record, but I would have been fine with a loss if we just hadn’t shown up or if I felt like it was deserved. That’s not the case, we did not deserve to lose this game at all and the makeshift side we put out gave all they had.
So I was disappointed. Not with them, but for them. PSV haven’t lost at home for 50 odd games but had we been a bit luckier they’d have lost this one. We did give away sloppy goals and that was our undoing, but we were never outplayed or under any real pressure. So aside from the result there was a lot to like, and ultimately we still finished top anyway (thanks, Atalanta).
We kind of knew what the line up would look like when we saw how many of the big hitters were left at home. Slot’s options were somewhat restricted, and he then lost Darwin on the day of the game to illness. So he didn’t have a great deal of options with experience, but I was still a little surprised by a couple of things. I assumed Endo would be in the back four and that Morton would start in midfield. Instead, we had both Robbo and Kostas in the side, Endo was in midfield and McConnell got the nod over Morton.
I felt bad for my boy Tyler. He’s been in and around it all season without hardly getting any playing time. He could be playing for Leverkusen or Atalanta this season but we kept him around and have barely used him because we’ve got Gravenberch, Macca, Curtis and Endo ahead of him, but now he’s sat on the bench watching McConnell getting minutes ahead of him too? Not gonna lie, it felt arlarse. But then McConnell was fucking brilliant and completely justified his selection. They could have both played though and Robbo could have had the night off.
Robbo did ok at centre back but picking both him and Kostas when one of them will be starting at Bournemouth seems a bit odd to me. Given that Robbo was subbed in the second half we can probably assume that he’ll get the nod this weekend. We got exposed defensively and gave away some bad goals, but that’s to be expected given the amount of changes we made and that Robbo is starting for the first time in a position he’s never played.
The football we played was really nice though, especially in the first half. We took the game to them and I was convinced we were going to win the game because despite all the changes we were clearly better than them. Until we weren’t.
It was an open game with plenty of space between the lines. We had no problem playing through them, and then the longer the half went they were doing the same to us. It made for an entertaining spectacle and I was really enjoying it up until we conceded twice in first half stoppage time. That wasn’t as much fun to watch.
