Liverpool 3 Leicester City 1 (Dec 26 2024)

    matchreportheader.jpg

Straightforward enough in the end. We fell behind early again, which is irritating, but it wasn’t because of a slow start as we were actually looking good until they scored out of nowhere. One of those things, I guess. It can happen, but I’d rather it happen five minutes in than five minutes from the end.

It certainly wasn’t going to worry me as we’ve seen enough from this team to know they don’t panic and they’ll come back. Plus Leicester are shite and have been giving up more shots on their goal recently than anyone else. Twenty odd in every game since they put a horse in the dugout.

So with so much time left there was no need to worry, but if they’d managed to sneak a second one maybe then I’d have felt a bit twitchy. I didn’t actually make it to Anfield for this as believe it or not I’m still sick. I can’t shake this fucking thing and I’ve been in bed most of the week, mostly catching up on the sleep I’m not getting through the night because that’s when the coughing fits come.

I hate missing games because we don’t tend to do well in them when I’m not there. I know my absence has nothing to do with it, but I’ve missed a handful of league games in 30 odd years and the record isn’t good. Going a goal down would have worried me if had been someone better than Leicester, but there was no way we were dropping points against these, especially after the boost we were given earlier in the day when Chelsea collapsed at home to Fulham.

The goal we gave away wasn’t that bad. It’s a bit unlucky as without the deflection Alisson saves it easily, but it’s quite well worked by Leicester. I’m not sure why Gravenberch ended up at right back but he was unable to stop Mamavidi crossing for Ayew, and although Robbo was marking him quite tightly he did well to make space to get a shot away. He’s shite though and he’s never beating Alisson without a huge slice of luck, which he got with the defection of Virg.

After that we barely let them in our half, it was total dominance and we did have chances, but not too many really clear ones. I don’t think we were doing too much wrong but we were throwing in a hell of a lot of crosses, which might not be the greatest idea really. I get why we did it, as we were in some delicious crossing positions with loads of players in the box, so it’s hard not to. But Leicester probably wanted us to do that all things considered.

I was fuming at the time added on in that first half as well, especially since we'd scored and the time taken for all their 'injuries'. 12 seconds? Fuck off. Also, their goal was jammy as fuck. The deflection took it to the only place Allison couldn't reach it. Both Fulham goals were like that as well. We don't seem to have much luck with teams spawning goals against us at the moment.  Luckily its not being too costly. Hope you're better soon mate.

I'm sorry but to describe that goal without mentioning Trent is ridiculous.

He lost the initial challenge in typically half-assed manner, strolled back without any intention of supporting Gravenberch, and then looked like he hadn't a care in the world as we conceded.

He was utterly woeful throughout the game.

I thought Trent was most of our threat in the first half and created the 2nd so woeful is a wild take. Goal was one of those things but if you’re being really critical it pea rolled into the box and neither Gomez or Virgil were quite in the right place to cut it out

One of those things?

Jesus, he's supposedly after £350k a week to stroll around and give the ball away repeatedly. For the sake of an assist every four games.

He pissed me off big time first half.

Just not good enough for the first goal. No-man’s land. Gotta make that tackle if you go for it, or stay with the runner. Instead he got had off and then strutted back a-fucking-gain.

The corners he took two minutes each to deliver were fucking shite and the coaches obviously yanked him from that at half time because Macca was on them second half.

And that lazy swing when we were 1-0 down and pressing, which ended up 50 rows back in the Kop, summed it up.

Second half was less of a problem. More because others stepped up and we relied less on him to create.

A good game at the weekend and he was back in dick swinging mode.

Over it.

The VAR checks irked the shit out of me. Lets see how we can suck the passion out of the game and specifically the stadium. As you say, if its taking you that long to assess it then just give the goal.

To make it worse, after the Gakpo goal was dissallowed after 6 minutes of forensic analysis, the commentator then lauds the linesman saying, credit it to him, he flagged it...... if anything it proved he was a bottler and just flagged anyway- he cant have seen the inch we were allegedly offside

That was bollocks, he flagged Salah offside who wasn't.

We did what we had to do and, really, what was expected.

Leicester were all I expected them to be, and time wasted from early on, without the referee actually doing much to stop them.

Once they’d scored they were a disgrace, with Daka and Ayew acting the twat at every opportunity. But again, it was expected but the referee didn’t do much to stop it, and adding only 2 minutes at half time showed that.

Overall, we were on our game, especially in the second half, and despite the odd lapse, I felt we dealt with Leicester mainly in third gear.

Keep it up and keep the pressure on the others to keep up.
