Brentford 0 Liverpool 2 (Jan 18 2025)

    matchreportheader.jpg

Fucking get in there!!! At the end of the season I feel like we’ll look back on this weekend as when the title was won. This was the ‘late win at Villa’ moment from our last title season if you like. We didn’t know it at the time, but when it was all said and done and we looked back, that game jumped out as the pivotal moment and Sadio’s winning goal is seared into the memories of everyone, even old fuckers like me with fading memories.

United at home was the game that cemented it in the moment, but looking back on that season it was the win at Villa that really broke the back of City and gave us the momentum to go and win it. I’m getting that feeling now, although I should probably say I also had it when Darwin got that last gasp winner at Forest last season and that didn’t end up going so well! This feels different though. A lot different.

The momentum swing this weekend is fucking massive. Arsenal will have been watching this game and thinking they were going to be facing Villa with the chance to cut the gap to two points. Then Darwin said “nope” and they went on to then blow a 2-0 lead against Villa and end the weekend six points behind us having played a game more. From two points to six, just like that. The game in hand makes it potentially nine points, and we have a superior goal difference that effectively would make it ten points.

If it were peak Man City chasing us, that cushion is nothing, especially as we’re not at the level we were when we were regularly picking up close to a hundred points. We’re not quite there, but 90 seems like a reasonable target and there’s no way Arsenal or Forest are getting close to that.

Had we won this 2-0 with a couple of first half goals it wouldn’t feel anything like this does. Two stoppage time goals will have our lads absolutely fucking buzzing. Travelling home from this will have been the best feeling they’ve experienced all season and you could see how happy they all were for Darwin. To then see Arsenal choke away a couple of points, and suffer the heartbreak of that late disallowed goal, they’ll have been on cloud nine, like the rest of us.

Great report Dave. Just to say, I think Arsenal won there 3-1, coming from behind with their special brand of 'putting it into the mixer'. And it's not just you who's got Darwin's back. Anyone who can't see what he brings (even Mo says he loves playing with him), can't be helped.

Couple of things I don't understand in our game at the minute. Both involve Ali.

The time he's spending with ball at his feet rolling it off the bottom of his foot. He's doing it even when we're chasing a game. Going to get caught out soon.

The other thing is our kick off routine. Most managers make a big thing of playing out from the back and keeping possession but we give it to Ali and he launches it long, just don't get that. That was seventies football.

On the thing about rolling it with his studs, I’ve wondered about that too. He’s not the only one. Quansah and Konate both do it when they’re looking to see which pass is on. I asked the scouting nerds in the group chat (Stu & Brownie) and drew a big, fat blank.

Ha ha.

I'll ask my Grandsons, they're bound to know.

Virgil was as well against Forest when he was inviting Forest to have a go.

Problem is, sometimes Ali looks like he's wondering what to have for tea and looks liable to getting done.

It’s to tempt the press in by looking as if we’re not fully in control of the ball so we can by-pass it. I don’t like it either.

I wonder if Ali is ever in full control of the ball, puts the shits up me sometimes.

Oh I know you're still in the boat with me. It's a small band of hard cores left. Me, you, Bjornebye, Kurt, Suarez, a couple more on here, some die hards on twitter. The rest all went scrambling for lifeboats when the water got choppy, or they stayed ashore and never got on board in the first place.

Nice trolling, Dave - as if you seriously expect us to believe it took you more than a nanosecond to decide Darwin was star man!!

Genuinely did feel bad for not giving it to Trent.

Not that bad, but a little bit bad.

I still believe in Darwin too. I hope his confidence is back and really loved how he smashed in the second goal (that shot definitely goes over the bar if he did not score the first goal). I really hope this time he can kick-on, get a run of games and score regularly - all the attributes are there.

I enjoyed that especially the bit about the referee. He must be aware of the shit that Darwin has received over the last few months/ years, and could see what it meant to him. Fair play for not being a dick and booking him.

I’m glad you thought it was a good performance. I thought I was going mad reading the match thread.

They won 5-1 at Palace a week or so earlier, that's where I got confused.

Easy done at our age mate. I still had to double check the result even though I watched the fucking thing live.

That's the one Harvey booted into the crowd isn't it off the little pitch side cone isn't it? I wondered who'd got that! Ace!
