Arsenal 2 Liverpool 2 (Oct 27 2024)

    matchreportheader.jpg

A point away at Arsenal is rarely a bad one, and that certainly applies here. It’s a good point for us, less so for them. They’ve finished above us the last couple of seasons, they’ve beaten us in the league at their place in both of those seasons and although we went into this one above them in the table, we haven’t been blowing the doors off anyone and our form has not been as convincing as the results have been.

So I think pretty much all of us would have taken a point before the game and I have no complaints about the result, particularly as it was fair on the balance of play. I have some concerns about the performance, but it’s mostly the same kind of stuff I covered in the Chelsea game. I don’t like certain things I’m seeing and it can be a difficult watch at times, but I don’t see them as long term issues by any means, more so just inevitable teething problems to be ironed out.

Slot has only been here five minutes and is over-achieving with his results so far, yet he never uses that to pump his own tires. It’s usually the opposite, he’s very honest and open about what he’s seeing and based on the way he’s spoken about some performances we’ve had (notably Chelsea), there’s absolutely no way he will have been happy with what he saw for most of the first half, and parts of the second for that matter.

Yet the results in both games are sound, so there is a lot of comfort in that. Far better to iron out the kinks while picking up results than doing it while sifting through the demoralising debris of losses. I don’t really feel any better or worse about us after this game. I would have liked us to have played better and to have been a bit more on the front foot (ok, a lot more), but maybe we’re just not good enough to do that at the moment? We were shite against Wolves and Palace away so it’s probably unrealistic to think we’d go and stick it to Arsenal.

So while there are things I didn’t like and I don’t think we played well, I actually think Arsenal should be feeling more concerned than us because this isn't a good result for them. They led twice and had us where they wanted us, but Arteta is so obsessed with defending these days they just tried to settle for the 2-1 and see the game out. When Gabriel went off they just parked the bus completely and barely left their own half, trying to hold on to what they had.

Maybe we contributed to that by playing much better in the second half, but did we play better because they surrendered the initiative to sit back and go into the defensive mode we’ve seen from them a lot this season already? It’s the chicken and the egg I suppose, which is a fitting analogy given I’m talking about Arteta and Slot.

Tbf I think it was hit with so much power no one could have saved it

I'm saying if he was closer to Saka, cut the angle at his near post more and made himself bigger it might be enough to get something on it. If Alisson is rooted to the spot like Kelleher he isn't saving it either. But that's what I think really sets Alisson apart is superior positioning and seeing things early.

Definitely, it was a great goal. Not comparing them but Suarez scored similar goals.

Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up.
