Wijnaldum keeping all options open regarding his future

Gini Wijnaldum has downplayed the summer links to Barcelona but has stopped short of confirming his long term Liverpool future.

The 29 year-old midfielder who is one of Jurgen Klopp’s most trusted players was constantly linked to the Catalan giants to be reunited with his manager at international level in Ronald Koeman.

The level of intrigue increased when Liverpool were actively chasing Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago and there was a wide held belief that if Liverpool landed the Spaniard, then Wijnaldum would be off.

While Liverpool eventually got their man, they also held onto Wijnaldum and he has continued to be a omnipresent figure starting all four league clashes this season.

Now on international duty, Wijnaldum spoke about the last few months as the Mirror reported:

“I don’t think [the Barcelona interest] was that serious, otherwise you would have read a bit more, or more would have happened.

“There was nothing concrete. I didn’t have to think about it.

Gini then talked about his Reds career confirming he will play out the season with the Reds but  was not thinking any further than that.

“I will stay on [with Liverpool ] it looks like now. My contract will run for another 10 months.

"It could still change, of course you never know that in football. So we'll see.”

To his credit, Klopp has let things play out and refused to give a running commentary on what may or may not happen.

“It’s all good with Gini. Absolutely fine about the future as far as we are involved. I can’t speak about a few years, but it’s all good for the moment.

“Since Gini is here I have had 500 or 600 talks with him. Of course I’ve spoken to him since he came back from international duty. But that’s all.”

I don’t know why all footballers don’t run down their contracts and leave for free when they know there will be a demand for them.

I find it weird when fans get pissed off with it as well, as long as they try hard till their last game I don’t see a problem. It’s not their duty to agree to be sold just so the club can make money.

It's disappointing when a popular player has a contract stand off with the club. It benefits no one.

It's up to Gini what he does but I think the club would be stupid to let him leave for free.

This was definitely what people believed would happen after the Bosman ruling.

As it is, a player who has two years on their contract, and is offered a decent pay rise to extend, is likely to take the money that’s on offer rather than gamble. All it takes is one injury, an untimely loss of form, or their club deciding not to play them during a contract row, and they are in a far weaker position.
