Arne Slot says the pathway that the key decision makers at Liverpool are taking has been vindicated by their fine start to the season.
The Reds manager made the comments in relation to Liverpool’s closest title challenger at this present point of time which is Chelsea.
Since the Todd Boehly era started in May 2022, the West London outfit have spent a mind boggling £1.1 billion on players with a Net Spend of £656.1m.
In that same time frame, Liverpool have spent a much more modest £299.3 while recouping £156.7m of that for an overall Net Spend of £142.6m.
The figure of Liverpool’s spend on transfers in the last two and bit seasons is even more enlightening when you realise it is only £10 million more than a perennial-lower-middle table team such as Wolves (£289.3m).
This past summer, Chelsea outlaid another £220 million while Liverpool were much more prudent spending £35million on goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who has remained on loan at Valencia, and forward Federico Chiesa who has been injured for a large majority of the season so far.
Jurgen Klopp was never shy in highlighting the way that Liverpool go about their business in a sustainable and controlled way complained to some of their main rivals.
And while there would be some in the Reds fanbase that would not be against bringing in big stars and exciting talent every transfer window, what has to be understood is that the Liverpool method has unquestionably been successful.
It is certainly something that Slot respects as the Mirror reported.
“This is what this league table makes interesting now is that there’s one team who didn’t do anything during the summer, except for Chiesa, who hasn’t played (a lot) for us at the minute, and there’s one team that’s spent what they’ve spent and both are successful.
“I think it’s good for everyone that we are at the moment, competing right up there. It’s not only given to the ones that spent numerous amount of money, but you can also be successful if you just stay with the team you have and look at your academy.
“I think there are several ways of being successful and that it’s also nice and there’s also an identity to first look at your players, or to first look at your academy and see what that brings.
“It is not only given to the ones that spent numerous amount of money but you can also be successful if you just stay with the team you have and look at your academy a lot.”
“That makes football such an entertaining world that you can be successful in different ways.”
After understandingly being circumspect in his early days after replacing such a talismanic figure of the modern era, the Dutchman has dropped the odd quip in recent weeks showing more of his personality and once again came up with a clever little statement.
“Now maybe the owners might think, ‘OK, so the best thing to do is bring no players in at all. Maybe I should be happy with how Chelsea do at the moment and I can tell the owners, ‘yeah, but if you bring in £1.2billion, it’s also a possibility to be successful’.
