Slot: It would be weird if Harvey was happy regarding his playing time this season

    image.jpeg

Arne Slot says it is a positive sign that Harvey Elliott is frustrated with his lack of game time this season but it is all part of being part of a squad filled with quality players.

The English U/21 international has only played a full 90 minutes on two occasions this season, both which came in domestic cup competitions.

The most minutes he has played in the league was against West Ham on the 29th of December (16) and 43 league minutes in all, albeit he missed two months of action with a fractured foot sustained on international duty in early September.

That meant that Elliott missed an opportunity to make an early impression in the thoughts of the new man in charge and his absence gave players such as Curtis Jones and Dom Szoboszlai a good chance to impress.

Elliott who was a firm favourite of Jurgen Klopp has been linked with moves to Brighton and Borussia Dortmund in recent times and speaking to the assembled media (per the Echo) ahead of the clash with Brentford this afternoon, said he understands fully the situation that the midfielder is in.

“The last thing you asked (Elliott's game-time) is completely sure.

"It would be weird if he would come to me and say: 'I'm so happy with the playing time I have at the moment'. But the first thing you ask me (transfer speculation) is the same answer every single time.

“We don't talk about rumours where people talk about players who are in contract talks or if we are linked with players or our players are linked with other clubs. That he wants to play more he should because if he was happy with his current situation that would be the wrong thing.

“But every single day he is working as hard as he can. But like Federico [Chiesa] - because many people ask about him, who is in competition with Mo Salah - Harvey is in competition with four or five very good midfielders, you may agree with me or not."

While Elliott played the full game against Accrington Stanley last Saturday, he did not see any gametime in the midweek clash against Nottingham Forest and Slot explained his reasoning.

“I like the way we played in the last 20-25 minutes at Forest so that for me is not a reason to change. If you want to bring that moment back, we played quite well in the first hour but we didn't create a lot then I made a substitution."

I’m putting it out there… I’m not a huge fan of Arne’s use of the squad, Elliot, Kostas, Endo, Chiesa, Danns even. All should have more minutes this season, but I’m not the one who’s got us to the top of every league and cup competition we’re in, so what do I know.

I hope it doesn’t come to bite us in a few months time.

He's got to get minutes in these players legs, the league cup, the FA cup and the dead rubber champions league games is where and when. We will need them match fit for the end of the season run.

League Cup won't be an avenue for any fringe players.

Fully agree with this, it was one area Klopp did better than basically anyone in. Was hoping this would continue under Slot, disappointed that it hasn’t.

Elliott, Chiesa & Danns have all been injured / unfit for a significant % of the season.

Tsmiskas has been injured as well but has regularly played when available.

Agree on Endo to an extent. I do hope we make more changes v Lille & PSV.

What Slot is doing is similar to what Klopp

did before 20/21 - have a core group of 18ish players and keep everyone in a sharp & in a rhythm. It was only once we started getting so many injuries did Klopp start make so many changes.

Slot has commented, even yesterday, all our plans are geared towards players being in peak fitness / sharpness during the run in. His injury prevention of muscle injuries, touch wood, has been quite good so far. I think he knows what he’s doing.

It won't, mainly because our top players have had plenty of rest through this season. They had 8 days off in the middle of December (because he rotated them all for the Southampton cup game )

They've just had 6 days off because of the Accrington Stanley game

They can have 7 days off if he rotates for the Lille game.

Elliot, who I've never thought was good enough needs to prove himself. He's had opportunities under Klopp where he was anonymous and he's clearly not pulling up tree's in training under this new system.

Why is everyone so desperate for him to get minutes in the middle of a title race? He was pretty poor against Accrington Stanley too. We don't need passengers who offer us very little.

I had hoped Slot could do with him what he did with Gravenberch but it was just that, hope. Elliot is a seriously limited footballer for a top team wanting to win the league and champions league. He has no pace, he's one footed, doesn't tackle very well, can't win headers, he doesn't see a pass and doesn't play forwards enough. So why should he get more minutes... just because he's in the building?

Good post.  Elliot would have a much better career in Portugal or Italy.  I had high hopes for him when he joined from Fulham, but it would appear that his ceiling is probably lower than most anticipated at the time.

He needs more of a run as a #10 or in midfield. He doesn’t have the pace to play instead of Salah.

He played well towards the end of last season in midfield. We should have brought him into the side sooner.

I think he could be some sort of Bernardo Silva type player for us, he’s still only 21.

I agree with the stuff around his lack of physicality but when he's got some momentum from regular minutes he's one of the midfielders who does actually look to play forward and he chips in with a few goals as he's got a good strike on him.

No one's gonna argue with you on the pace, or the physicality. But how you can say he doesn't see a pass or play forward enough is beyond me - see today's two goals as examples.
