Skrtel rejects 'unacceptable' contract. So what now?

Martin Skrtel’s Anfield future is up in the air after the defender rejected the “unacceptable” contract offered to him by the Reds.

The Slovakian has a virtual ever present over the last two seasons but only has one year remaining on his current deal, and said he feels “uneasy” about the terms of the proposed extension, which is believed to be heavily incentivised on appearances.

“It's unacceptable for me. I think that such contracts are offered to players who are much older than me or players who have had some health problems” said the 30 year old. “The contract, which was presented to me, makes me uneasy, so I did not sign it” he added.

Skrtel has frequently been linked with moves away in recent years but has always been happy to pledge his future to the Reds, but unless an agreement can be reached Liverpool are faced with the choice of selling now and getting something back or allowing him to play out the final year of his deal before leaving on a Bosman.

With the Reds having shipped 98 league goals in the last two seasons some will argue that Skrtel - while being the club's most consistent defender - is the common denominator in that. Others will wonder just how much worse that figure would have been without him.

I thought he was pretty good in that golden season way back in 2013/14.

And Rodgers apparently deserves another season on that basis, on proper pay.

Why shouldn't Skrtel?

when you put it like that, there is a case.  I actually think the club is being insulting here.  Show the lad a bit of respect.  Offer him a proper contract or tell him he's not required.  Why would Skrtel sign football's version of a zero hours contract?

I've never been a big fan of Skrtel.

But I admire his attitude, the way he fought his way back in the team and I think his performances the last couple of seasons have been ok.

He's also experienced and one who actually looks like he really cares about the club and the results.

Also too many changes will be bad in itself.

For those reasons I hope he stays, but if he goes it'll not be a disaster.

Certainly, NV, but our recent replacement record is, without being pathetically warped or sarcastic about it, dogshit.

We've got some good players in too.

I'm happy with that.

Pay him properly or get rid.

I'm amazed anyone could possibly have a problem with this. A significant chunk of his contract will be in base salary with the rest incentivised.

I'm less amazed that the players who make various grand claims about the ability they have (granted not in the case of Skrtel) suddenly lose all confidence when they have to back that up.

How often you play can be based on a number of factors though, like Rodgers constantly dropping Lallana for not shaving his sideburns.

Pay as you play should be reserved for the Owen Hargreaves type perma crocks of this world.

Yeah.

The greedy, but humble, Slovak twat.

Tommy Smith was on 500 quid a week and never complained.

It's a hard life for a footballer isnt it. This should be the model for the all footballers. Cut their wages down a bit. Get them to complete a time sheet at the end of the week like I have to.

What was the average wage then? Tommy Smith was poorly paid by today's footballers' standards but still miles better than the average person.

It won't be an appearance bonus it'll be a availability bonus.

By all means pay cuts and timesheets, but why just Skrtel?

Because his is the contract being negotiated at the moment. Coutinho may very well have a similar clause and just didn't kick up a fuss.

Unlke the rest of our squad of superstars?

I'm not sure having a squad of players not good enough is an argument for keeping another one. Had this been about one of several other players, I'd say the same.

Disrespectful of Skrtel towards the club to use the media as a device to leverage more money from the club.

I don't know.

But I was comparing him to today's standards.

And even by yesterdays, it wasn't outrageously and stratospherically different from the average person's back then, as it is now.

It's weird that people are always receptive towards the idea of wage cap in football but when you try to bring in elements of it (like incentivised contracts) it's seen as an insult to footballers.

Have to say I'd be pissed off if I were a player that hardly ever misses any playing time and who had on more than one occasion had staples put in my head before going back out there, and they offered me some shitty pay as you play deal like I was some sort of Sturridge/Sakho/Agger walking sicknote.

Isn't he also our longest-serving player now Gerrard has gone?  Not an especially respectful way to treat him.

See above.  As for some other posters who commented that if he plays the games he will get all of his pay, yeah that's right; however looking at the way the manager fucked around with the side last year I can't blame him for not being happy, he could find himself benched for three months whilst he experiments with Markovic and Ibe as twin sweepers or some other ludicrous shit.
