As competition for the left back berth is set to intensify following Aly Cissokho's return from injury last night, Reds' boss Brendan Rodgers has hailed current incumbent Jose Enrique as 'one of the best in the Premier League'.
Cissokho had been sidelined since injuring an ankle early on in the Capital One Cup win over Notts County in August, but completed 90 minutes for the under 21s last night, claiming an assist as they hammered Spurs 5-0. He is now set to come into contention for the Reds' game at Enrique's former club Newcastle next week.
The Spaniard has come in for some criticism of late following some inconsistent displays, but Rodgers has spoken out in defence of the 27 year old, saying "Jose has been playing with a little bit of an injury, but he's still been showing his determination and pride for the team.
"He has all the attributes to be one of the best left-backs in the Premier League. He's a threat when he goes forward and defensively he's very difficult to beat. The great thing is that Jose is always working at his game. He appraises himself honestly when we have chats. He's one who is looking to improve his game and his passing.
Rodgers added, "There's no doubt that on his day he's one of the best in that position in this country."
