Report: Reds look to sign talented young Dutch defender

Liverpool are hoping to add to their Dutch contingent by signing young PEC Zwolle central defender Sepp van den Berg.

The 17 year-old Dutch youth international has been coveted by some of the top clubs in Europe including Bayern Munich and Ajax while Sampdoria had a €2.5million bid turned down in January.

The Liverpool Echo reports that if the Reds were able to land van den Berg, who played fifteen times for the 13th placed Eredivisie club in 2018/9, he would not be classed as purely an academy player despite his tender age.

Moreso, he will be put in a similar bracket to what Joe Gomez was when he joined from Charlton in 2015, where he was viewed as a first team option from day one.

Certainly the quality of the defensive set-up has changed markedly from that period and if signed, van den Berg will have to wait for his opportunity as well as adjusting to a new league.

At 189 cm, he is a terrific height in terms of a central defender, and amongst his strengths are his sense of positioning, being able to read the game and his passing ability.

If they were able to get the signature of the highly rated youngster over the line,  it will be seen as another feather in the cap of the clubs' scouting department.

De Ligt 2.0.

This is the player Ajax want to replace de Ligt. Would be interesting to see if we pull it off.

Johan Inan, who covers PEC for Zwolle-based newspaper De Stentor, has few doubts over Van den Berg's talent but believes a big move to Anfield should be the opportunity for the player to start pushing himself more.

He told the ECHO: “Jaap Stam came in as head coach in December and in January he put Sepp in the reserve team for a week just to trigger him to work harder, be more aggressive and give it his all.

What makes him unique is that when you look at him, you wouldn’t believe he’s 17 because he looks so mature already.

“Of course, physically there’s still a lot for him to improve and I’m quite sure he’ll get stronger in England.

“He’s quite fast and quite comfortable with the ball at his feet as well. Mentally he should really improve. That is his weakest part.”

You can never to many Dutch defenders IMO

That's false. Any more than 650 is a real twat at lunchtime in the Cafeteria. It's just impractical, TJ. Will you please think.
