Report: Liverpool looking to tie down Naby Keita on a new deal

Naby Keita is next in line to receive a new deal according to reports.

Liverpool spend the summer locking away a number of key players to long term deals in the summer including captain Jordan Henderson, Alisson and Andy Robertson.

The one player who they could not stop departing after lengthy negotiations was Gini Wijnaldum who after appearing to be set for a move to Barcelona ended up at Paris St Germain.

According to the Express via (Calciamercato), it is for that reason that talks have opened up between the club and the Guinea international whose current deal expires in the summer of 2023.

Keita was signed by Jurgen Klopp in the summer of 2017 from RB Leipzig but stayed an extra year at the German club before making his way to Merseyside.

The 26 year-old came to the Premier League with a reputation as a box to box midfielder with a ‘superb range of passing’ and his all-action style was likened to Chelsea star N’golo Kante.

Without being too critical, It is fair Keita has fallen short of those expectations with the midfielder who cost in the region of £50million falling well short of expectations.

Part of that reason is that Keita has not been able to string a level of consistency together in his time at the club.

Collectively he has missed more than a season (55 games) due to different ailments ranging from thigh and groin strains, a long term ankle ligament injury and Coronavirus.

To call him injury prone at this point of time would be correct, but an interesting fact is just like Joel Matip, Keita missed minimal football due to injury before coming to England.

But unlike the central defender, when Keita has returned from layoffs it has taken him a great deal of time in getting his game up to speed.

It has led to many fans questioning his overall worth to the side and whether he will ever reach his true potential at Liverpool.

The frustrating thing about Keita who has made 80 appearances and scored seven goals in his time at the club is that when he is on his game, you can see the talent he possesses.

Conversely, at times he looks like a square peg in a round hole but despite that, Jurgen Klopp still sees Keita as a important member of the first team squad.

An illustration of that point is that Keita has already started two league games this season along with the opening Champions League encounter with AC Milan.

I have yet to read the match thread so I don't know if it was mentioned but I watched the game and I was thinking just before his goal that he'd been on for 20 minutes and I didn't recall him touching the ball and his shot was his first proper touch.

Great hit like.

Stick a blank contract his nose and tell him to fill in blanks.

We need game winning mavericks and this cat is a game winning maverick.

The game was won but lovely goal nonetheless. I'll be more impressed when the pressure is on and he bangs in a worldie to win a big game.

Not really what decent player would join Barca right now? That Gini was even willing to go there at all shows you we didn't offer him a decent contract

Disagree, to me it shows he picked the money over everything else.

Replaced by a child last night who didn't do much but still produced more than him.

What is the fucking point of offering him a contract? Shirley the "protect his value" argument falls on its face if he's turning in performances last night on the odd occasion he's not injured.

He’s on £6.3m per year, £31.5m over 5 year plus £55m transfer fee so the best part of £90m all in. £ for £ must be the worst transfer ever, even worse than Carroll.

That's seriously grim.

Tie him down ? To a railway track presumably.

How he’s being offered another deal is a mystery to me. I think the coaching staff must see something in his ability  that your average fan just doesn’t get. To me he looks shit or injured 90% of the time.

Loads of people still rate him. Made a comment on another platform about how I don't know how not everyone is sick of him at this rate and how can the fanboys still defend him all the time, and I got torched. There's a cult around the guy. I think most fans were willing to give him a chance even after 2 years down the line of his signing, me included, but that sentiment should be over now.

Unfortunately, Klopp loves his qualities on paper despite the fact he rarely delivers. He called him one of the best midfielders in Europe at one point. That, with the fact his value has probably dropped too low for us to consider selling him means he'll be here for the long haul.

Makes a 5 yard pass and you get people getting all giddy…..

awwww Naby lad Naby lad.

He’s an absolute fraud…. It’s just as well it was Curtis Jones that got hit last night by from Kostas because if it was Naby the malingering cunt would have been out for the rest of the season.

I reckon this talk of a new contract is a bluff to inflate his value prior to a January sale. No way the club are going to give him another £31m deal, they will be praying he gets sold for £20m and they try to forget they paid £55m for a dud.

Had to laugh during the Norwich LC game. We had a great break on and Naby had the ball just inside the Norwich half. He just needed to play the ball either through the middle or along the wing and Div or Taki would have been clean through with virtually just the keeper to beat.

But in all the excitement, Naby lost the plot and instead of kicking the ball cleanly, kicked the ground instead and the ball bobbled away to a Norwich player.

I thought then, that's Naby fucked, again and didnt see him finishing the game. 2nd half, he didnt reappear.

If Liverpool are in talks about a new contract, it is surely just to protect his transfer value. His ship must surely have sailed?
