Report: Breakthrough in Wijnaldum contract talks

Liverpool have made positive progress with midfielder Gini Wijnaldum over a new contract.

The current contract of the midfield workhorse expires at the end of next season, but The Guardian says that both parties are very comfortable with how talks are progressing with an extension to either 2024 or 2025 on the cards.

The main issue throughout this process has not been wages, but assurances from the club that Gini will remain firmly in the plans of Jürgen Klopp.

This proposed deal will see the popular Dutchman extend his spell at the club to the best part of a decade after joining in the summer of 2016 for £25 million.

In that time he has made 132 appearances in all competitions scoring 13 goals.

It will also see all key figures of the Klopp revolution locked away and ready to ‘go again’ as we move to the next phase of the German's tenure.

Wijnaldum has made no secret to the fact that he wants to play the game until well in his 30s and finishing where it all began for him back home in Holland.

“You want to play at the highest level and win trophies, like Clarence Seedorf. It's my dream to play as long as possible. Like him, Zlatan or Ronaldo.

“I want to play at a high level until I'm 38."

And the way the physical specimen looks after himself, you wouldn’t put it past him to do just that.

I don't think there will be many footballers in a position to walk away from their clubs no matter what in the next year or so. And any player talking about ' being in the manager's plans' just has to keep playing well enough to stay there.

I’d have given him a contract until 2025 just for that smile.

Superb news, if it’s true (which is potentially a big caveat given the blag artist who’s reporting it).

Great news. One of the most handsome players we’ve ever had IMO.

Top 5 off the top of my head.

1. Wijnaldum

2. Redknapp

3. Berger

4. G. Johnson

5. Torres

Rushy and Case are a bit unlucky imo.

Squirting burrata all over the shop.

A refreshing dip in the Adriatic straight after. Senza tentazioni, senza onore.
