Murphy: Salah is still not appreciated enough

Danny Murphy claims that the true worth of Mo Salah will only be truly recognised when he is no longer at the club.

The Egyptian superstar is having yet another remarkable season for the Reds where he has scored 25 goals (17 PL/8 CL) in just 30 appearances.

While the goal scoring exploits of Salah have never been questioned, the one thing that critics used to pinpoint was his knack of ‘going it alone’ even if teammates were in better goalscoring positions.

But there is a theory that what separates the truly great players from the good is their ability to hone their game, become the complete package if you like.

Salah currently sits second in the Premier League assists table with nine, just one behind teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Speaking on Talksport (per the Echo), the former Reds star said that Salah’s overall record is truly outstanding and you almost take it for granted that he is going to score whenever he takes to the pitch.

And that is where the issue lies according to Murphy.

“He breaks that many records and he consistently scores such wonderful goals and does so much good that you just kind of expect it.”

.”That’s the biggest compliment I can give to him. He’s still not appreciated enough, (but) he will be when he goes.”

“To think the goals that he’s scored and the records that he’s breaking, none of them are from centre-forward positions."

The long running discussion over whether Salah will sign a new contract once his current one concludes in 2023 seems no closer to a resolution.

Murphy hopes that we will get to see more of Salah not just because of his quality, but because of his winning mentality.

“I just hope that he does sign because I don’t see a let up in his hunger and desire – the way he plays, his speed, his running off the ball, his desire to score goals – he doesn’t look like the type of character who would fall into any comfort zone as he gets double the money or whatever.”

I was watching The Kick Off on Youtube the other day and almost all of the panel concluded that Bale and Neymar were both better players than Salah. I don't think neutrals genuinely understand how good Salah is.

He's started 160 games in the Premier League and he's scored 112 goals with 42 assists. That's 0.96 goals and assists per game, basically the same as Thierry Henry for Arsenal - who's widely regarded as the greatest Premier League player of all time. Ronaldo's is 0.59, Suarez is 0.83, Bale is 0.45, Shearer is 0.73, Aguero is 0.84. Salah and Henry are out there on their own. And the scary thing is... Salah is getting better.

Neymar never proved himself in the PL, easy to look good in La Liga playing alongside peak Messi and Suarez. Bale at his best was amazing and single-handedly carried an otherwise average Spurs side. A bit like Steven Gerrard of old. They are two of the best players in the world in the past decade or so, not the worst company for Mo.

Maybe your mates on MOTD could mention that he scored his 150th goal for us the other day, from an 80 yard pass from the goalkeeper?

If that was Ederson to *insert any City attacker here*, they'd be jizzing themselves until the cows come home.

Under appreciated by other fans and people in football. I've never seen any Liverpool fan think he's anything other than one of our best ever.

Eggsactly.

Fucking hell. Here I was thinking we’ve got this curly haired cunt up top, picked every week and wasting a place for someone. Asking for a decent wedge for fuck knows what, as I don’t see him contributing. Then, alas! Danny Murphy has pointed out that I was under-appreciating him and I get it now. Thanks Danny. So glad you are about with these insights

Isnt murphy talking about wider football opinion rather than Liverpool and the fans?

I see Mo frequently overlooked for the top awards. I think if Mo was called Christiano Ronaldo or Bruno Fernandez, Mo would have had a shitload of penalties by now. But he doesnt despite regularly getting kicked about the box.

How many MoTM awards (not that they really count for much in the scheme of things) does Mo get in the league or other games? Hardly ever. Lineker and Robson were handing that accolaide between themselves once yet Mo doesnt get a look in, tells you all you need to know how the media see him.

I don’t think so mate - he says “That’s the biggest compliment I can give to him. He’s still not appreciated enough, (but) he will be when he goes.”

Also, I think Murphy is a bell end, so I would rather it was the dopey way.

Salah gets shafted because he exploded onto the scene in his mid 20's. He wasn't the same player before Liverpool so people still view it as some kind of aberation that he got to this level. Bale was a star at two clubs and Neymar was the next Pele when he was 18. Mo just has a perception problem.

My unbiased opinion is I'd rather have Salah than either at their best because he's fulfilled his potential. Bale and Neymar have left some things on the table. I think both are more talented than Salah but haven't always cared about football. Hazard is another one of those.

The big individual honours have always been a joke. Its massively political and they hate the idea if giving it to a player in England and for nearly 15 years if your names not Ronaldo ir Messi you won't win it. Virg,Lewandowski amd Suarez all screwed out of the award to continue the cult of Messi/Ronaldo.

Even going back to the 70s,it took Keegan to go to Germany to get the award, getting screwed out the year before by Allan Simonsen.

Suarez 2015/16 season is one if the greatest individual seasons of all time, but he was obviously blacklisted from the awards

53 games

59 goals

24 assists

I think Murphy has a point, and I hold my hand up. While I love the bones of Mo I have probably taken his numbers for granted a little bit at times, possibly because of his modesty and low key approach to greatness, and also because they are very difficult to get your head around for an attacking wide player. More importantly though, I hope the club aren't making this mistake, and are straining every sinew to retain this phenomenon.

If the club don't get him resigned they are going to have to go to some lengths on the transfer front for fans to forgive them.

Unless they announced Klopp signed a new long term deal and a big transfer fund fans will be rightly pissed. Might be one mistake too many from them, though I doubt they'll give a shit

But on the flip side, the summer transfer thread and the FSG thread would be a lot more fun than they are now.
