Merson: Curtis Jones should consider leaving Liverpool due to arrival of Thiago

Paul Merson has made the extraordinary claim that Curtis Jones should consider leaving Liverpool on the back of Thiago Alcantara joining the club.

The 19 year-old has impressed many observers with his ability to adapt from under age to senior football.

Jurgen Klopp has often praised the academy graduate and has not being shy in giving him minutes in the league as well as in domestic cup action.

But he also says that Jones is far from the finished product and needs to keep working at his craft to fulfil his potential.

The youngster has some fine role models to learn from in the middle of the park including captain Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum and Fabinho as well as being part of a true winning culture.

But with the Spaniard now being added to the midfield contingent, Merson feels that Jones will not get many opportunities to develop and should look at moving on.

The Echo (via Sky Sports) reported Merson as saying:

“He is a very good player, but how long do you stay at Liverpool?

“I don’t see him playing at the moment, I don’t see him getting in the team.

“All of a sudden, Thiago comes in and he’s probably thinking, ‘I’m doing alright at the moment, I’m playing well’, but then Thiago comes in and you think, ‘Where does that leave me?

“If push comes to shove, I think Thiago plays more forward in Jones’ position.”

Former Reds captain Jamie Redknapp added his thoughts to the discussion believing that the cup competitions would be his best opportunity for minutes as well as learning from those around him.

“At 19 years of age, this is where he is going to get his games right now.

“In terms of midfield players, he’s got all of the attributes, but there does come a time where you wanna play and be in the first-team.

“I mean this in the nicest possible way, but he’s a very lucky man because he’s got great senior players and role-models around him.

“Every day, I bet it’s an education being around James Milner, Jordan Henderson, players that do everything right.

“It’s so easy for young players to get affected by all of the surroundings around you, but he will be training and learning the basics really well.”

Back on the sauce I reckon.

He probably talks complete sense when on the sauce, compared of course to the shit he spouts the rest of the time. They keep him on at Sky to make Redknapp look good.

Nonsense from Merson. He'll get plenty of chances over the next couple of years as we'll have four midfielders in their thirties (assuming Gini stays).

At the same age as Curtis is this season, Merson got seven league starts for Arsenal in 1987-88 (plus another eight as a sub). Add in cup games and that rounds it up to... eight starts and nine as a sub.

Curtis played a total of 12 games last season; with Lallana gone, plus Shaa going, he’ll add to the four games (out of six) he’s already played this season.

As ever, Merson is talking drivel.

The fact that we have a thread about his latest embarrassing mouth-droppings suggests they were right to keep him.

Bullshit sells.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the producers told the pundits what to say. Controversial opinions probably mean higher viewing figures.

Course they do. "You can have vodka in your water bottle but you have to call Salah a cunt"
