Lucas wants out? Good for him.

Lucas Leiva may have played his last game for the club with reports suggesting he will leave Anfield before the transfer window shuts at the end of this month.

The popular Brazilian failed to even make the 18 man squad for the 1-0 win at Stoke on Sunday and his relationship with manager Brendan Rodgers has been steadily deteriorating over the last 18 months. The player has been unhappy for some time and was looking to leave the club last summer, but interest from Italian clubs failed to materialise into a firm offer so he stayed, albeit reluctantly. Now he may become the next player to leave the team in this 2015-16 season.

He almost left in January too following interest from Inter Milan and with things finally having seemingly now come to a head with Lucas wanting to leave and Liverpool reportedly ‘happy to listen to offers’, the odds on him remaining at Anfield beyond this summer appear to be lengthening by the day.

For some this will provide another stick to beat Rodgers with, but if the Northern Irishman sees the highly promising Emre Can as the long term option for that third midfield spot alongside Jordan Henderson and James Milner then surely that’s understandable? He may be happy to have Lucas in the squad as a back up option but if the player is not willing to accept that role then there’s little a manager can do.

No-one is to blame here as it’s a fairly simple situation. Lucas believes he should be first choice and be in the team every week while Rodgers sees things differently and prefers other players.

At 28 years of age Lucas does not want to be a back up player and in many ways that’s commendable as there are far too many footballers these days happy to pick up wages without earning them. If only Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Jose Enrique had his desire to play football every week.

Lucas wants to play football but that’s not going to happen for him at Liverpool barring a midfield injury crisis, so therefore the most logical conclusion is him moving on to a club that see him as first choice. It’s no different to Jay Spearing, Jonjo Shelvey or Charlie Adam leaving. The profile and level of Lucas is obviously higher, but the basic principle is the same. All would prefer to play elsewhere than sit on the bench here.

Some players are happy enough to be squad men, others want to play every week and will not hang around if they aren't. If Lucas has had enough of not being a guaranteed starter then it’s best for all parties if he moves on.

It may also present more opportunities to promising teenager Jordan Rossiter, particularly in the Europa League for example.

Lucas has only ever been ok apart from one season and I don't understand why so many people (in general, not on here) are so gutted about him leaving. I bet they were the same ones saying he was shite and not a proper Brazilian and from Breeze Hill in Bootle when he played more often than he does now.

Every time he plays he constantly gives away free kicks in dangerous areas. He nearly made Gerrards head explode when he did it in the last few minutes against Norwich in 2014.

West Ham are interested apparently, hopefully he will go there rather than some mingebag Italian club who want to pay us a tenner a year and a pack of Lambert & Butler then decide against buying him

As I said during the dark days last season the only managers I would have accepted coming in to replace Rodgers were Capello or Mourinho, two men who are almost guarenteed to get a title if they are given a fair chance.

Mourinhos a complete cunt and I don't like the man but I know I could get behind him if he became manager, when he started defending and speaking up for our club like he does with Chelsea all the fanbase would.

You mean Ancelotti instead of Capello dont you?

Its easy to be confused,'All these I-talians and their greasy hair coming over here in their fancy suits.'

Speak for yourself. Absolute bollocks.

Stringy won't be best pleased but seems Lucas is staying,  Good decision imo

The Besiktas president has confirmed that Liverpool will not let Lucas Leiva leave the club in the current transfer window, according to a report in the Liverpool Echo.

The 28-year-old was widely reported to be on his way out of Anfield after being left out of the manager Brendan Rodgers’ squad for their first two league games of the season against Stoke City and Bournemouth.

However, Lucas, who has two years to run on his contract, returned to the starting line-up for Monday’s goalless draw with Arsenal following an injury to the skipper Jordan Henderson and Rodgers praised his performance.

“Lucas is our best defensive midfield player,” Rodgers said after the Arsenal game. “There are games where I play three midfield players but not always with a defensive specific one, but when we do need that, he is the best one we have. He’s certainly very important to what we want to do.“

Sell him and upgrade - Okay.

Loan him and don't even replace - Marcellus Wallace with a ballgag in place being sodomised.

If he's staying then it's good news, certainly compared to the alternative.

I don't want him to leave. I like him. I don't think much of him as a player, that's all. I'm not a hater. He's no Glen Johnson.

Good,  He's no genius I would agree but he's can be a key player in certain situations ; Monday being a good example and he's loyal, Don't get me wrong I would have him shot at dawn  if it would bring back Masch !

Where I come down.

He's still nowhere near good enough as a DM though but Rodgers doesn't seem to value that position anyway.

Rodgers said he was the best option for defence in a 3 man midfield. I expect to see him against tougher teams away in the same set-up as for Arsenal. At home we have to be thinking win against every team.

Obviously the sensible thing to do keeping him but if he's only going to use him in a handful of games, maybe he should buy a midfielder who can actually defend as well as pass, run and shoot. Versatile players are useful as well, and you don't have to wheel out players now and then who don't normally suit your tactics.

To be fair, we are down with injuries as well.

People don't understand what he offers the team but most of them are dumb Oasis fans.

TK you're like Churchill in 1937, telling everyone in the Commons the Nazis were up to no good and being laughed at while smelling of Remmy Martin VSOP and cigars.
