Liverpool need to hit the ground running against Stoke

by  Dean.Jones

Liverpool are getting set to return to the Britannia Stadium on Sunday in Brendan Rodgers’ most important match of the season.

The memories of the last time Liverpool played Stoke City are fresh in the minds of football fans the world over. It was incredible to see. But the Liverpool fans will have wished they hadn’t seen it. Their last match of the season saw one of the biggest annihilations of any team in the 2014/15 season and it was the Reds on the end of it. This defeat topped off a terrible season for Rodgers’ men, who had been hoping to build on the great run they had in the previous campaign but failed miserably.

Although the Premier League fixtures are randomly generated and it is pot luck which teams meet which and when, it seems that this fixture was written in the stars. This fixture could well be pivotal in determining Rodgers’ future at the club, and how the team will fare in the campaign ahead.

Liverpool need to make a big statement when they return to face Stoke City this weekend. They need to acknowledge that the last campaign was a bit of a stumble but they are still building and dreaming big at Anfield. Rodgers needs to put out his new players and say, “Look everyone, I’ve played the transfer market right this time.”

Christian Benteke has a lot riding on him. Not only does he have a £32.5million price tag to live up to, he also has the ghosts of other failed big money signings hanging over his head. Andy Carroll’s name has been thrown about a lot when talking about the signing of the ex-Aston Villa man. And more recently Mario Balotelli’s dire season shows that some players just don’t fit into a particular way of doing things. If the big Belgian can continue the blistering form he found towards the end of last season, though, he could be even more devastating in this Liverpool side. At the time of writing betfair have him at 14/1 to be the league’s top scorer but get it while it’s hot because this may well be worth a punt.

After some good-looking business during the summer, Liverpool fans will be desperate to see their team hit the ground running in the new season. Whatever you do, do not miss this opening game. It could make or break the season.
