Klopp: Transfer strategy has to be a long term plan

Jurgen Klopp has spoken about Liverpool's exceptionally quiet transfer dealings to date saying the club is still looking for additions to the squad as we edge ever closer to the new season.

However, he has also stated that if no further players come in, it will mean that there is no-one available to improve what he currently has at his disposal.

Young Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg is the only Liverpool signing to date in the summer window, while Fulham youngster Harvey Elliott is expected to join him in the near future.

But apart from those youthful prospects, there has been precious little activity even in terms of speculation of new additions joining the club.

Some managers are well known to openly show their frustration when they have missed out on targets, or not been given the green light to sign who they want.

However, Klopp is someone who seemingly seems very content with who he has available going into the new campaign.

The Mirror (via the Echo) reported the manager as saying:

"We are still looking, but it will not be the (biggest) transfer window of all time.

" It will just be a transfer window.

"It's about using this team. In the transfer window, you have to build a team that you think you want to go into the season with.

"But I have that team already.

“If we can bring somebody else in that makes it even better, we will see. But if not, this team is already there.

"And again we will have to find solutions at different moments.”

While this patient and measured strategy may frustrate some within the fanbase, Klopp said there is a clear method behind it and he is certainly not after what you would deem as a 'quick fix.'

Jurgen.Klopp1_.jpg

"Transfer strategy has to be long-term.

"Short term covers the problem, but doesn't solve it.

"If someone gets an injury, and you buy someone to fill the position and three weeks later the injured player is back, then you have double quality in the same position.

"Having too much quality doesn't help with the development of players.

"It's good for everybody on the outside, because they can say 'well if he can't play, then he can play or he could play'.

“If you're working together all week and then three of the players (of the same quality in the same position) can't play, they won't get any better.

"It's not just about them staying confident in that kind of situation.

"You have to create a situation where you NEED the player, you need the boys. That's what we try.

"We have 100% always long-term plans. That's what is really good about this football club.”

When Klopp puts it in those terms, he makes an excellent point.

You need to strike a balance between developing your own, and looking at the market for what you may need like he has done with the signings of Virgil Van Dijk, Fabinho, and Alisson in more recent times.

Klopp has continually spoken during the off-season that there have been 'new additions' to the squad in the shape of fit-again squad members Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, Rhian Brewster and Adam Lallana.

And if our Champions League manager is content with how things currently look, then who are we to argue with that?

I hope he is sacked for this.

I hope he doesn't read TLW as he will see that part of the fanbase are hysterical fannies and are actually questioning our best manager for 3 decades, even after winning the European cup and coming within a whisker of beating a financially doped team who the season before hit 100 points.

I think in matter what we did this summer people were always going to complain we should have done more.

Yeah, I think we should just trust him and stop moaning about everything at all times regardless of the realities. Some fella in the other thread was saying we hadn't built a squad and we haven't renovated Anfield. I just can't give a fuck about this shit anymore. It's literally the opposite of what's actually happening.

Unbelievable that he can be manager of a top club knowing far less about a good transfer strategy than the average poster on here.

Shut the fuck up and buy me Benteke. Now. DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO ITTTTT.

Can’t believe FSG aren’t backing him.  He clearly says it there in black and white you morons.  You’re telling me if he had a billion dollars he wouldn’t sign another left back.  No chance.

Oh I'm sorry, I take it all back, I don't won't to upset anyone.

The squad is great and they've fulfilled their promises on the stadium.

I'm not arsed. I'd love stat man scouts job though... Fuck it I'm having the year off.

My only gripe is our standing is so high right now it feels like opportunity to really strike fear into teams. They know what we are, whether they can do anything about it is something else but damn I really think we need a creative threat through the middle, we do rely on our full backs massively.

If klopps genuinely happy, so am I.

My main fear ahead of the new season is that we’ll start a bit flat given the huge effort that went into a season that lasted until June and the various summer tournaments that most of our key players were involved in afterwards.

Guardiola and Jurgen had almost identical moans this week about international demands on players, but City can clearly absorb this better.

Great to be in them, but the European Super Cup and World Club tournament are additional impediments to sustaining a title challenge that City won’t have.

Jurgen will have to stifle a fist pump when we get knocked out of the FA Cup and League Cup early. We just can’t afford the extra games.

It will be a big few months for Divock and Brewster in the initial phase of the season. An argument could be made that any new attacker would be less likely to be effective over this period as they settle in and get used to what are pretty significant fitness and tactical demands. Still, I’d prefer if we signed somebody.

Overall, given the continuing financial doping of our biggest rivals and the huge task of even matching our points total from last time out (one defeat, second place)I would say European success is more likely than domestic success again this year.

You’re stretching a bit there, considering it’s looking like we won’t even sign just one player to go into the first team squad.

You’d expect some grumbling from fans of any team in those circumstances.

To me, the club signing exciting new players is part and parcel of the entertainment factor of football support. We want the cups and honours of course, thats the most important thing, but the excitement of seeing a new signing play for the first time is up there. And if he turns out to be shite, well hey theres always January. Or next summer.

The reason why we won't buy anyone there is in black and white. The money to buy now is mental as seen by Newcastle signing a centre forward for £40m who has scored less than 20 league goals in his career. So you buy when you know you're getting close to top quality. It's pretty simple.

Not having that mate, if the transfer game was simple then the people who do it for a living would get it right a lot more often than they do.

It isn't that simple and I'd never suggest but it's the reason behind it surely. Quality of quantity. Pretty much the opposite over what all of our recent managers have done or not been able to do.

I'd agree with most of this. The demands of the AFCON and Copa America coupled with us having to play a Charity Shield and Super Cup,not forgetting the league opener, mean we need to start brighter than we did last season. While I think our squad can absorb some of this I do think it's a big ask without a couple of signings or promotions from the youth ranks. Remember that last season Sturridge chipped in early season so a replacement type for him is needed (Brewster or Wilson?) I'm not criticising FSG here as I am not endorsing a 50 million signing, just one or two squad players, maybe a free signing or two?

I think it's grossly unfair to characterise those of us who are a little disappointed at the lack of transfer activity as hysterical fannies who want us to spend a bajillion dollars on half a dozen big names. The squad we have is a superb one. It doesn't need a major overhaul. There is just a question mark over cover for the front three and at left-back. Those aren't glaring weaknesses, but areas of minor concern which we would prefer were addressed.

The side who finished above us with the second highest points total in history and English football's first domestic treble have felt the need to add one or two faces. It's not unreasonable to raise an eyebrow when we haven't.

Or you could try to make a coherent argument. Some people on this forum who criticize FSG harshly actually say things that back up their points somewhat reasonably. You said the squad hasn't been well built. That's objectively absurd. Maybe make a semblance of sense and then people won't be "upset".

That, and if you have a clear hole in your starting 11, which we don't really have. It all comes down to; do we want to spend upwards of 50m on a player who isn't guaranteed to start most matches? The answer seems to be no.

Yeah we just have to let a player know we're interested and they'll walk over broken glass to sign for us, wont they? So how come that lad at Bristol City decided he'd rather sign for Bournemouth (not disrespect to Eddie Howe and his club) than us?

Transfers dont work like fans expect. People moan the 'drop off' after Mo, Sadio and Bobby up front, pointing to Origi and young Brewster who, may be the new Robbie Fowler.

Oh, Werner's class, sign him to give the front 3 a rest. Except the quality of Werner wont sign for Liverpool to give Mo, Sadio and Bobby rests during the season. He wants to plough his own furrow and play every game.

Oh we need cover for Andy at left back. Let's sign anyone as cover. What, another Moreno who everyone can blame for every goal we conceed when he's playing? That argument is a dead end, it is one Klopp threw out when the van Dijk transfer first went tits up and it seemed almost everyone wanted him to 'just sign any CB' instead.

No, Jurgen's shown he's not splashing the cash unless he gets the player he wants who will strengthen the team. please, let's not go back to this nonesense of 'just sign any' left back \ cover for the front 3 \ any other position.

Am I concerned city are signing people? What's changed, they always sign players whether they need them or not. They can afford to, people dont want us to be like city but say we have to buy to 'keep up.' No, we really dont. Jurgen has shown he can run city very close and stay legit.

He might not be able to win 19 for us because as Ive said since he came here, city with their spending, will always be his biggest obstacle to winning the title.

Am I concerned we havent signed any big players? Not really. I might be misguided but I trust Jurgen. Im not expecting us to win the title either given the fact it looks like we'll be in this FIFA World Club Cup and that alone will cause any club difficulty in the PL. There's also about 15 PL clubs who will roll over again for city but put up a better fight against us, everton anyone?

First time in 20 years I get the bathroom to myself.  No kids banging on the door.  No wife asking me to "hurry up"!  Just me and my Saltwater Sportsman magazine.

Good post, agree with most it. My guess would be that the hysterical fanny digs weren’t aimed at you or other posters with a reasonable argumentation behind their opinions.
